Let the debate on trades specifically related to fantasy football follow:

  1. Terry in Bangkok says:

Thank you Lucas for being crystal (and taking the curses off me from Hazey).
I am more than happy to jump on the Roo band wagon, just like I hung off Peterson and took the lobster.

Can I also be safe in assuming that Byrnes has had his little snooze and will be rotated back in while Pods has his weekend with the family?

  2. tt says:

    Current lineup is:

    Goddard – Hodge – Scotland – Enright – Goodwin – Fisher – Hunt (Webberley/Heath)

    Montagna – Bartel – Boyd – Cooney – Watson – Ball (Rohan/Stevens)

    StevieJ – Goodes – Didak – ROK – Rockliff – Brown – Gia (Brennan/Hitchcock)

With 5 trades left, I’m thinking of 1 downgrade in the forwards of either ROK or Brennan to build the bank and saving the remaining 4 trades for finals upgrades/injuries, eg Hunt=>Lake, Ball=>GAJ, Cooney=>Swan.

    Sound plan or plain crazy?

  3. Paul says:

Terry…yes, Byrnes and Hawkins to return. Pods probably rested, I am wondering who the 2nd player rested will be. Interesting.

  4. Paul says:

@terry, you are right about the restings, however it’s important to note Riewoldt is not at risk of resting because he needs all the games under his belt he can get. But in regards to bringing in any other St Kilda or Geelong player, then I would be wary.

  5. BB says:

    Hi guys

I have 3 trades left and 258k in the bank.

At the moment I consider my main weaknesses on field to be henderson and naitanui. I also have pods and do not have roo.

Originally my plan was to trade henderson to gilbert and naitanui to jolly this week leaving me 1 trade and about 50k.

However I am wondering whether it is even worth trading naitanui or if it’s more important to keep that extra trade in hand.

I have also been considering the possibility of trading Henderson to Lake this week and keeping two trades in hand, but that would only leave me 30k in the bank.

What do people think would it be crazy to spend all that money to get Lake with Gilberts run home. And in particular what do people think about trading naitanui with my limited trades in hand is it worth it?

I am facing an elimination final in week 1.

  6. Johnson says:

TT good plans. Think the only thing you will need to worry about is Goodwin as I am.

  7. Hazey says:

@BB – I think I read a whisper here earlier that Cox was heard to say that he will be playing as NicNat’s understudy for the rest of the season. bad for me, but maybe good for you.

My Sex On The Beach has turned sour of late….well actually I will take the blame as Cox has been ordinary since I picked him up – sorry everyone.

  8. Hazey says:

@tt – I will be looking to do the same with downgrading Pods for cash then upgrading my M6 and D6, D7 hopefully.

  9. bama says:

@terry in bangkok- if Goodwin is fit next week the crows will play him, he is there captain and club champion and has only 4 games left in his career.

@Hazey- it’s not about keeping the faith with relton (even though i am a tiger supporter) it’s just that i didn’t want to waste the trade, and when i would of traded him for PODS after his second game i was overseas and the internet was down!!!! By then the boat was missed.

  10. Johnson says:

Is NicNat a must get rid of ? I am contemplating him to Jolly/Mumford but there so Inconsistent I would prefer upgrade somewhere else.

  11. Hazey says:

Ah the old OS mistrades Bama – I make a couple every year when I am away on footy trip over here in the UK or things just get ab bit out of hand Thursday nights and I miss the start of the game Friday!

  12. Lucas says:

Hmm, anyone considered (and a newspaper web site did) that maybe another team currently in the top 3 and not St Kilda or Geelong might rest their players, particularly if say, top spot is wrapped up early. I’m thinking that team might give a certain high scoring but disliked midfielder a breather after knee bleeds in last year’s finals. (One might say that he gets enough rest each week anyway hehe)

@BB any way you can avoid the elim? If so then you could consider trading ONE this week, but I’d just sit it out if you are certain to be in the elimination round next week. No use trading in players who then get injured on you

@TT might have to think very closely about who you bring in. Judd is a better safer bet than Swan is at the moment given Carlton is fighting hard for a finals spot.

  13. jbone says:

cox said eventually in his career nic nat will take over, not for rest of year

  14. Terry in Bangkok says:

Methinks trading is no different to cashing in a really good cow for a wounded elephant.

@BB will your MPP opportunities suffer if you trade Henderson?
Wait 1 or 2 on the Naitanui. There is scuttlebut that he may be given more ruck time while Cox has a snooze.
The general mood of this blog seems to be Pods into Roo as being the way to go.
And (here he goes again) take a good look at Fisher.

  15. Lucas says:

Who knows keeping Pods as your POD could turn out to your advantage. If you feel confident of making the GF, you’d back Pods over Roo in SA probably.

But in competitive leagues, it’s getting to the GF that’s the problem. Heaps of tough games to come…

  16. jbone says:

sex on the beach was good for awhile, but its got quite unconformtable, getting sand in places you dont want etc

  17. Lucas says:

Sort of struggles when sandi only gets 40 instead of 140.

  18. BB says:

    @Lucas
that is the other problem I am currently in the 8 but if I loose this week I miss the finals. Its a toss up as to whether I will beat my opponent if I dont trade (I have outscored them the last couple weeks but I assume they will trade hard to beat me as we both need to win to make the 8)

    @Terry in Bangkok
yes I will loose MPP if I trade Henderson and it will leave Davis on my forward line bench but I am too nervous to go in with Henderson on the field and my other backline bench options are Strijk and Smith. On fisher I have him already took him very early in the year :)

  19. Terry in Bangkok says:

    @Lucas
I see where your heading on resting.
The permutations are mind boggling. The Doggies No. 1 ticket holder has called an election for the 21st of August, which happens to be Round 21 and the pups are due to meet the flightless swans on that very day. Surely Rodney will be giving his stars the day off so they can go and vote? Keeping Julia as PM must rate ahead of beating the bloods who will be on their last legs when the Dogs are assured of 4th spot?

Didn’t realise the high scoring but disliked Aker had knee bleeds during last year’s finals. Perhaps I should get a colour telly.

  20. robert says:

    hey everyone,

    im having trouble with forwards.

    my forward line is

pavlich, goodes, brown, pods, okeefe, hall, harvey (danger, hitchcock)

i want to squeeze riewoldt in, but who for?
will okeefe come good or is it time to swap him in cos of bad form?

  21. fryzie says:

Cox had the flu for last weeks game and heard him on local radio this morning and he still sounded congested.. doubt he’ll get much TOG in the derby.

  22. Lucas says:

Fantastic news Fryzie. Every hit out from either team means points for me. I (generally) like those games.

  23. Oss says:

I would be shocked if Cox missed any games for the remainder of the year. In fact Woosha said NicNat would get a rest sometime after the break. Cox played with the flu last week so I’m expecting better numbers this week. Really hoping the shuey rumours are true and he is going to play WAFL reserves this week, or something like that. I’ve had him and Kayler on my bench all year and so far they have only cost me one zero and I feel fortunate that I’ve held off trading. But it would be nice to have some cover for finals.

I wouldn’t add any players from Saints or Cats at this stage, Roo excepted. They are going to rest players, we know that, so why trade a zero into your team? And if you have thin or non-existant bench cover in any position, have a trade or two ready for when your Saints/ Cats players are rested. 3 or less trades, I think you should forget about upgrading and just save those precious trades for coverage.

  24. fryzie says:

So I just adjusted my downgrade/upgrade strategy to go Pods -> Moore this week (if named) and upgrade Maguire to Lake and then upgrade Gumbleton to Riewoldt next week (due to Gumby’s negative breakeven it should compensate any big score from Roo)

Leaving my forward bench as Rockliff/Moore with 1 trade remaining but no leftover cash.

Is Rockliff too good to have on the bench and would I be better off trading him for Roo and having 160k for my final trade with Gumby/Moore as the bench.

I’m also considering Stanton -> Swan as an alternative upgrade to Maguire -> Lake, but I think I’m going to stick to the latter.

  25. mick says:

Heres a toughie for yas. who to trade out for reivwolt?
    J.Brown
    J.Pods
    Rockliffe
    B.Hall.
Im thinking the pod because he only has one game left at skilled BUT its in round 22 and could cost me the grand final. tough choice.

  26. turbo08 says:

There’s a lot of talk here about whether or not to upgrade Rockliff. I don’t hold him but one thing I would be wary of is the “honeymoon effect”.

That is, a new player comes in, flies under the radar for a while running around largely unchecked and gets a few decent scores…..but, sooner or later he draws the attention of opposition coaches, starts getting some planning put into him, maybe a tag here or there, and the scores start to dwindle off.

Rockliff has been scoring well for about 7 or 8 weeks now and picked up 31 possessions against Geelong last week. Will he come in for increasing attention?

  27. fryzie says:

    @ mick

The discussion on that topic has been covered in great detail already, essentially it comes down to personal preference but Pods is likely to get rested so he’s out for mine.

  28. tt says:

Thanks Johnson, Hazey & Lucas, valuable feedback! Much appreciated!

Ideally, I’d like to hang on to Goodwin and upgrade Hunt or Webberley to Lake. Goodwin should put in some decent performances to see out his career, barring his injury turning more serious. And the Crows are somewhat of a milestone-game specialist and I can see them putting a few good games in for Goodwin.

  29. tt says:

    @mick

Have to agree with the majority – Pods out for Roo.

  30. mick says:

Sorry guys just read back through all the chat. just hope it doesnt come back to bite us in the ass come grand final time with the j pod likley to score big at skilled. I think J.Brown has some big games to come, hopefully sooner than later.

  31. JoshyC says:

Lucas, your post in the best buys thread at about 10 this morning was one of the best reads I have ever had on TS!

    Thanks mate.

  32. bama says:

    pods is out!!!

  33. Ruddy says:

Interesting on peoples thoughts on Roo. Yes, Hawthorn are a finals contender. But if you watched that game, i don’t understand how you can say Roo is back, or even played that well. Hawthorn are a low SC scoring team, meaning more points for Roo, and Gibson was playing so far off Roo, and gave him so much space, which Roo will not get every week. Take out this one game on the weekend

  34. Ruddy says:

*take out his game on the weekend, and he’s averaging 63 since he’s come back. Hardly convincing for mine

  35. Tiger Ben says:

    @ Bama

    So is Bartell who’s injured!

  36. bama says:

this is bullshit can’t take a frigg’n trick

  37. Hazey says:

Ruddyoath Ruddy…..now you’re confusing me! Don’t do this to a strung out healthworker after a 16hr night shift man! (Crazy boggle eyed, strung out looking face)!

Maybe just the PODS downgrade this week to functioning to A Grade upgrades next week.

  38. Ruddy says:

Haha, sorry Hazey, just confused as to why so many are certain that Roo is back. He still has a breakeven of 98, so even if he hits 100, he won’t go up too much. Unless you are trading someone like ROK, who is going down, i would hold, and make sure Roo is back. IMO he won’t be ‘back’ until next year. As someone put it a few weeks ago about Goodes, waiting a few weeks and having to spend a few extra thousand for him, consider it insurance money that he will score well.

  39. bama says:

shaw not picked either, this has gone from bad to worst.

Going to concede defeat but still do the sandi-hardingham trade this week.

  40. Sam says:

Hi everyone, got a bit of an issue with Bartel being rested and would like some opinions.

In both of my leagues I have an opportunity to get a top four spot if I win, but will miss out if I lose.

I have no cover (Gysberts and Shuey on the bench) and about $45,000 in the bank.

So as I see it, I have three options: trade Bartel to another mid predium (say Swallow), trade Gysberts/Shuey to Hardingham or other, or do nothing.

Leaning towards option two (Gysberts to Hardingham) but would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

  41. Paul74 says:

@ Sam – How many trades do you have left? Bartel will only* be out for a week so hold if you are low on trades.

  42. Bucko says:

    Ok, this is my team:

    Hodge – Goddard – Malceski – Hunt – Kennelly – McGuire – Sheppard (Nason/Shoenmakers)

    Swan – Ablett – Montagna – Dal Santo – Judd – Martin (Trengrove/Morabito)

    Sandilands – Jolly (Trengrove/Warnock)

    Chapman – Pavlich – Betts – ROK – Pods – Varcoe – Henderson (Gumbleton/Peterson)

I’ve got 4 trades left and $37k in the bank.

My thought is to downgrade Martin or Trengrove then upgrading McGuire to Gillbee. Leaves me 2 trades and

  43. Bucko says:

    bah, hit submit accidentally.

    continued:
That leaves me 2 trades and approx $135k in the bank.

Thoughts ??? Also who to downgrade – Martin or Trengrove ??

I only discovered tooserious this season and its really shown me how shit I really am at fantasy footy !

  44. Drum d says:

    Money aside, didak v roo?

  45. willy says:

with podz out and my only cover in hitchcock am now really thinking of the podz- roo trade would leave me with 2 trades and 175k or do i cop the score from hitch and save the trades?????

Also with shaw out webbq or strijk on field??

    thoughts?

  46. Trace says:

Hi all, never done this before so bear with me. I have been carrying Houlihan for a few weeks now and it’s time for him to go. I dont have Chapman but can afford to get him but will leave me nothing in the bank. Would I be better off picking up Riewoldt?

  47. Lucas says:

I hate it now with Pods out everyone will do the Pods to Roo trade.

I would have loved taking out finals in my league against the player who has hurt me so much.

But I guess Roo could always do a hammy a la Buckley 2007 and it’s curtains. Not wishing it on anyone, because it was heartbreaking to see a Pie side short on class – close to the flag, but without a champion.

I’d say for sure Roo is a likely trade in for most, it just matters when. I’d be waiting a week and conserving a trade, as Roo’s BE isn’t that easy to get. By end of next week I think you must be assured of getting him in if you are going to.

TBH I can see Roo either smashing the Dons tonight, or doing very little. Really depends on supply from the mids, and whether Fletcher takes him.
