Best Buys Round 15 – so its a day late…
OK here’s the best I can come up with. Remember to preserve trades where possible, and only go to keepers.
Probably only one massive cash cow can be afforded from here, the rest will have to be strategic upgrades.
Best of luck to you all. Should be an excellent round of football again, as the battle for the top 4 intensifies.
DEF
Rookie
Silvester (83400) – Now or never if you’re going to pick him.
Hurley (154200) – When he plays 2 in a row; he’s an option. Surely better than McPhee ![]()
McKernan (94200) – Good heritage, but otherwise a graveyard for rookies. Thank goodness for Grimes/Broughton and to a lesser extent Hill.
Midrange
S Fisher (393300) – Looked amazing first quarter last week. Maybe getting to the “I can not ignore him any more” price range. Plays for the Saints which is a blessing and a curse.
Mackie (379900) – Maybe turning a corner. The ultimate tease.
McPhee (386900)- After bagging him out before, maybe he won’t belt me up if I include him.
Premium
The G Force is in this week…
Gilbert (462600)
Goddard (545800)
Grimes (426200)
All great value…otherwise there are options – The H Team (Hodge, Hurn, Hargrave) or Alfred E Newman.
Chad Cornes and Drummond are great value players who will drop after this round most likely so if you want a premium may be best to wait.
MID
Rookie
The boat will be sailing on a lot of the old favourites. As you’re really just looking for cheap players to get some coin, here are the best:
Anthony (94200) – Looks a good cheap reliable player
C Garlett (101800) – Cheap and might get a go under the Crock
S Reid (113100) – Has been waiting all year for his chance for Doggies…but competition in that team’s red hot.
Midrange
Moloney (415500) – Churns out the points. Consistent 80-90s
Prismall (427600) – Can find the footy.
Salopek (374500) – Has been when fit, a SC machine. Getting fitness and Port have a lovely run home.
Premium
Gibbs (500400) – Now scoring when Carlton lose. Scary but ruining his chances of being a great cheap selection for SC2010.
J Selwood (507400) – Get him now if you don’t have him.
Bartel (564500) – Just looks ready to rumble. Best game he’s played for ages in the epic Saints clash. Tough, hard, using it well.
Pendlebury is the one we’re all waiting for as he remains ready to enter the drop zone again. Wait on this selection for next week. You couldn’t see him getting 209 this week, and if he did, you’d be on at 457k anyway!
Montagna in 3 or so weeks could end up a target. But maybe he’s just dropped his rating ever so slightly and that’s why he would be cheaper. I’d still want him in my team.
FWD
Rookie
Ballantyne (94200) – Will get a run. Good prospect, big for a kid.
Jurrah (179500) – Love the Melbourne aborigines. They will be a force in years to come with Davey, Jurrah, Wonaeamirri. Change of culture down at Demon land and it’s a good one.
Vickery (162200) – A Richmond tall and given their current ruck stocks, I’d think anyone over 190 cm should get a regular run.
Midrange
Cloke (342600) – Toot toot the boat is leaving the dock. Get on now or the ship will have sailed.
Mooney (355600) – Cheap cheap for his average. Brain fades but Geelong’s run home is OK, and he is the main key position forward, and finally last round v Fremantle at Geelong could be a Supercoach GF winner.
Murphy (356100) – A risk for sure, but a great player when going. Certainly worth the 7th spot in a forward line.
Premium
Davis (511900) – Can go cheaper (so hold off if you can) but with Didak’s improvement may get some easier touches.
Deledio (462100) – Cheap if you don’t have him, he seems good value to me.
Riewoldt (568200) – If you don’t have him, get him. Lovely run for the Saints (particularly in Supercoach finals) and this guy is the key to it all. Can’t see the Saints resting him, he seems up for a massive year and is an out-and-out gun.
RUC
Rookie
Clarke (94200) – Because he’s cheap.
Vickery (162200) – Because he’s probably been guaranteed a game under Rawlings.
Naitanui (194300) – Because he’s the most exciting player in the last 10 years at least.
Midrange
Kreuzer (355800) – Worth considering. Consistent game time.
Koschitzke (398500) – A good option with the Saints SC Finals approaching.
McIntosh (425600) – Has Petrie dulled his effectiveness?
Premium
Sandilands (558100) – Go Lurch, a great player up for another massive week against the Crows.
Fraser (454700) – No hitouts generally except when against the undersized e.g. last week vs Paddy. Should go OK with Minson/Hudson, Taylor, Clark, Tippett, Kreuzer, Vickery, and only one gun Jolly to come.
Jolly (474900) – Will get All-Australian this year ahead of Cox with Sandilands. Now back to the value he deserves.
yeah gazza and varcoe, sheesh. the cats just keep dorpping this week

Well well, that throws a spanner in my trade plans….a wonderful spanner.
Bartel or Montagna captain ?
god damn Gary!!!! Your supposed to be indestructible….this is a moderate sized spanner in the works….may have to ignore the delicious looking Pendlebury trade next week and jump the gun and bring in Jimmy B this week
For those that have Judd, i’m leaning towards him rather than a stkilda player because i can’t help but feel the saints may be a bit tired after last week. And remember the shalacking that the blues gave the tigers in the opening round? Could almost take a punt on fev too i reckon if you were game
ROK could be an option too for captaincy. I’m tossing up between him and either Volt or Judd.
It will be interesting to see how long Ablett is out for, and whether it is something that causes problems further along in the season.
Bench depth of lots of teams going to be tested this week – getting 22 players out on the ground will be a good effort in some ways. Happy now I traded in Liam Anthony last week – into the side you come young man.
And for the overall, this could be a season-defining round.
Ablett out
Anthony In
Really hope NicNat plays this weekend.
Definitely season defining.
To the bloke before that was talking up his Jacobs to Naitanui trade as being “the best of the year”, Naitanui has been withdrawn from their side along with Kerr.
should i trade beams for anthony to free up cash?
or would i be better off getting less cash and trading walker for ballantyne?
good trades and a good captain choice this week could well decide overall….if Cardinals picks a unique skipper who delivers a 170, the race will just about be run…
We are blessed though that the Cats have pulled their players out early (unlike last week with Steve J) as well as the Eagles. Often you only find out on the day.
Now it’s time to think about Captains – and I think Bartel is a great number two for my team. If you have Riewoldt or Goddard they would probably also be good options. Judd is a champ and very rarely down.
I wouldn’t necessarily go ROK as he might get Slattery who will be hellbent on doing better than the budget job he did on Didak. Generally “O’Donnell” is a great shut down player for the ‘Dons.
I don’t think Cardinals will end the race this week. Far more time to go. Teams from 800 points back can win it from here if they go 2300-2350 average. Pity for me I’m down by 3000! Will take more than a miracle to pull that back. Means a 2700 average needed
Oh and NicNat is ruled out too…:)
Lucas, if you can somehow manage to bug the system and select 3 or so captains for the remaining rounds i reckon youre in with a chance mate
Oh yeah, someone already said that *facepalm*.
I’m thinking bout going for bartel captain this week. Judd only ever brings me bad luck, getting 70s everytime I put him captain, as well as Goddard.
Had Goddard captain once after he got a 124 and he got me 84, the week after he got 129 and I put him captain again and he got me another 74.
Lucas – big time advice here…my original plan was Anthony in this week and then next week Rich > Pendles. Now with Ablett goin down im considering jumping the gun on the Rich trade and bringin Bartel in this week.
Upside : Bartel is better than Pendles and i get him playin this week so dont have Rich AND ANthony playin this week. Bartel would slot in straight as skipper.
Downside : More expensive (wasting about 100k realistically), and 1 trade used earlier than anticipated.
Suffice to say trades aren’t exactly growing on trees for me, but, as i was planning the Rich upgrade anyway, do you think it’s wise/unwise to do pull the trigger a week early?
Rich and Anthony, both shocking players to have playing. Harden up sweetheart.
loving my backline this week
Goddard/Gilbert/Gilbee/Drummond/Hodgey/Newman/Broughton(what a star)
All got 99+ last week (cept for Drummond of course)
No pavlich or johnson again this week though
Oh the fickle SC gods have struck down NicNat.
So much for the final run!
Supercoach has a way of biting…
My opponent for this week without cover has just lost Kerr and Ablett in one swoop, babang!
Now I’m happy in many ways I just lost Sandilands and that I have playing midfield cover.
Will still run the gauntlet with a zero from Lurch but looking lots better than it was a few hours back.
Hopefully that’s the last of the withdrawals!
@chris
I wouldn’t say bartel is that much of a better player than pendlebury. I think you’re forgetting that before he got his 0 and the 63 coming back from injury he was averaging almost 120 a round and was valued at around $630k for a while. With didak and swan playing well he could be in for some really big scores. If you go with pendlebury you could be saving $100k+ which would let you upgrade some other players in the later stages
Rich and Anthony aren’t that bad anyway
@Chris…
I gave Woody the advice to jump on Bartel a few weeks back. I agree Bartel is an excellent pickup.
That said going him over Pendlebury you are “buying high”. In general rules of trading you buy low sell high.
The loss of the trade and the $ will cost you options. If you want to lock yourself in go for it. But you might find injuries mean you need options more than you need points this week.
It’s up to you. I think Pendlebury will probably get between 80 and 100 this week, and Bartel somewhere around the 130 mark. Rich and Anthony probably about 70. Costing yourself maybe 50 points but giving yourself options may be worth it.
The other thing to consider is Pendlebury may still take a while to ramp up whereas Bartel is whitehot now and there’s no Ablett to steal his Pie.
The answer to the question is – do you want to win at end of this round or at end of round 22?
In the long run I tend to regret the trades I do make more than those I don’t. (Even though I’m spewing about Didak and ROK….I am annoyed more at the Meesen-Bellchambers trade)
yeah, ive told myself all along, only the 1 trade this week…but now im 2nd guessin myself…
the other thing is, in 1 weeks time every man and his dog will have Pendlebury, so do i wanna differentiate myself from the crowd, or just keep chugging along as is and try and explode in the last 2-3 rounds…
it’s a doozy this one…i do like your advice tho of keeping the options open….getting Pendles is not gonna hurt me as everyone will be doin it, whereas gettin Bartel and losing the 1 additional option could hurt big time…
Think about it this way – if Bartel does a knee, your year will be over and everyone else will keep going.
If Pendles does a knee in 3 weeks, everyone will be scampering … except those who resisted that trade (a few probably, but possibly not that many of the top 20).
You’d be in with a shot more likely the 2nd way.
I can only think you should get Bartel in if your team is almost identical to all the other teams there and you really really really need differentiation. I had heaps of differentials last year and therefore should have spent my time playing conservative – instead I got in other different options who got injured and I lost the win.
Rule of thumb – it’s ok to have an injured player or even a zero as long as everyone else has them!
yep, agreed Lucas….onto captain choice, i hate pickin captains, i really suck….
i have narrowed it down to Judd, Sewell (great record v Roos), Goddard or ROK. Tempted by ROK just to p’off woodyman as he reckons he is cursed by ROK….
I am screwed this week…
Brought GAJ in earlier this week after not having him for quite a few weeks.
Brought Cox in for Sandi as well…
Sub 2000 for sure this week…
Cox in for sandi would have been okay Jim? Or did you bring in sandi for cox?
@Jim
If you did Sandi in for Cox that’s a diabolical selection and unfortunately you will have to live with the consequences!
Other way round I have thought about going from Lurch to 204cm but at the end of the day I’m OK with one player missing.
This week I’m going Bartel captain (after such a long time he gets another chance…better watch out for another 70) and Riewoldt in as vice. Welcome back Nick. I hope you play well for me; it’s been too long since you were in my team, and it’s taken me moving heaven and earth to get you back.
May all of you have a wonderful weekend; may we see some gritty wins with some unexpected heroes doing well!
Yep, I’ve got Bartel as captain this week. Sure is a lot of out’s for Geelong… And considering I’ve got 6 of them, I’m hurting a bit.
And the end, I’ve gone down the trade road. Beau Muston -> Anthony to cover for Ablett.
And while I’ve got the cash on hand, I figured I’ld complete my forward line to cover for SJ.
Beau Dowler out for A. Davey. Not a bad #7 forward…
Which leave my team essetially complete. With decent bench coverage for the next few weeks. 3 trades to use over the finals is cutting it a little fine… but I’m hoping my bench coverage can make up for any short comings in that department!
ROK is my captain automatically. Heh
I got Beams to cover for GAJ oh well hope he scores nicely. Only one zero in my forward, (Thanks pav!)
Speaking of Forwards, if Gibson manage to shut down Franklin this weekend, Franklin could end up at 250k, that is damn tasty, wonder if I should straight trade Walker for Franklin when that happens?
One positive thing about franklin having such a shitty year is that his sc2010 starting price should be a beauty! assuming the hawks get a proper pre-season into everyone and theyre hungry enough (would like them to miss the finals for that reason) then he’d be a steal!
That said, i hope gibson falls off the plane on the way to tassie this weekend
Goddard is my skipper this week. Dominated the Weagles last time… Rich isn’t a bad emergency to come in for Gazza though.
ROK may suffer with Hall out of the team-remember how much he sucked without Mickey O earlier in the year?
Thats a good point knighty. he only started hitting his old form when he was able to push up the ground as a result of the other forwards coming back. if he has to push into the forward line again…
and what are your tips for this week mate? bulldogs/pies? brissy/cats? dees/port? weegles/saints?
Yep, Franky is gunna be my #1 pick next year. It will be all upside.
(heck, he couldn’t get any worse!
)
Wow, what a game! The top 4 sides have put on the best two games of the year within a week of each other.
Being a Pie fan my heart is still skipping a few beats……PHEW…….And importantly Pendles 85sc, price to drop to approx 403k
By the way – The Dids run around the wing with about 8 bounces….. into Neon, who takes a speccy, plays on and threads the needle – was magic !
Very happy to get the 4 points. But you gotta give so much credit to the Doggies. Never say die footy team.
Very happy Daisy cracked the ton for the first time this year.
Simon that Davis goal was so exciting as was the entire game. I personally thought our game for 3 quarters was so good, but I was worried we’d worked too hard. The Dogs are so fit!
The SC implications makes Rich-Pendles the no brainer move next week.
But for the rest of the weekend once again it’s all about the MAGPIES!!!!
Lucas…..this result may actually play right into our favor.
If we had run away with it – you just know our boys would play like butter sometimes in the next week or two as they are prone to do, losing a game or two they have no reason losing.
By holding on by the barest of margins tonite – complacency has no room to enter……..I hope
home from the match and still a bit numb by the end result, well shattered really. had a prat behind me and we were at each other all night. unfortunately he got the last laugh and was a real test of my anger management but sanity prevailed with the calming influence of etihad security %-|. anyway we gave the pies too much of a head start and missed chances we should’ve taken. congrats though to the pies, they are one disciplined unit when it matters although they did turn off in the last quarter to give the dogs a decent sniff at it. surprised to see pendles only end up with 85points as his composure and use of the ball is well ’special’. guess only 9 kicks hurt him in the end but his 14 odd handballs were definitely under valued imo. swan, dids, davis, maxwell, obrien and thomas were the difference in the end.
Rohan….watched the game online……was the opening half because we were that much better, or did the Dogs just not show up and ran flat for 2-3 quarters ?
The greatest insult to me is that I picked agst us – what happened – I rate you guys very highly.
I’ll be honest-I picked the Dogs
Other tips are Sydney over Essendon (go Essendon anyway!), Carlton over Richmond, Geelong over BL (never tip against Geelong except when playing Saints), Adelaide over Freo, Hawthorn to beat NM (only because its in Tassy), PA over Melbourne (never tip Melbourne) and St Kilda to beat Eagles.
Watched the Ashes for most of the game instead- go Australia!
thanks for the tips knighty, ive been hitting up too many roughies the last few weeks and need to consolidate somewhat.
Carn the aussies indeed! Bout bloody time ponting played like a captain and not a liability.
simon. i give all credit to the pies in the first half not to mention malthouse’s brilliance to instill such accountability and a discipline to negate the dogs strengths. i wouldn’t for a moment discount the first half simply due to the dogs underperforming. imo the under performance came directly from the game plan that the pies worked to not to mention a cracking application of skill in the first quarter. as much as the prat behind me on the night greatly encouraged me to loathe the pies by his behaviour i really rate the pies, malthouse, their professionalism and their work ethic. even a kind of semi left field choice of captain from an outsider in maxwell is an inspired choice. i’ve got to say listening to him and the pie players in their after match one can only be very impressed with the way they go about it. whilst ’some’ of their supporters may be luddites in their staggering abuse of opposing players fortunately there seems no correlation to their football operation.
