Draft day. Are we happy?
Scully and Trengrove. Both were always going to make #1 and #2. And man, I can’t wait to draft them into my own squad.
#1 and #2 selected. Provided all goes well in the off season of course.
Now, I’m going to do the lazy man thing, and point you all in the direction of a fantastic on-line resource for doing your research into these fine young players.
AFLDraftInfo.com – it’s a fantastic resource for doing a little digging- So much so, I’ve included it in the links down the right hand side.
But it’s not just the new players that’s important, the recycled players can be just as delicious. Luke ball and Simon Buckley, both at first glance look to offer some tremendous value.
But hey, who knows- still a long way til round one. Good luck all, hope you’re all enjoying your pre-seasons.
(And on an EPL front- 5 goals to Defoe! What an effort!!)
Very happy as a melbourne supporter to get top 2 ,,, not sure about gysberts i was expecting talia but if they pick him there they must highly rate him,, very happy with tapscott at 18 and even happier with gawn at 34,, hopefully he or fitspatrick turn out decent but hopefully both,, i think the clear winners in this draft were melbourne,, st kilda,, richmond and geelong got fantastic value with there picks (vardy at 40 something what a bargain)
ha! It’s hard to go wrong with picks 1 and 2 !!
I reckon Freo did quiet nicely picking up Crichton at 40+!
And I’m surprised that Panos didn’t get a guernsey. Sure due for a Rookie list somewhere.
A couple of things to consider.
Will the inclusion of Ball to Collingwood’s midfield alter Pendlebury’s role and as a result change his SC points, etc? My thoughts on this are that Pendlebury will be used in a similar role as usual but could be more the finisher (ie: deliverer of the ball to leading forwards) rather tha getting in and getting the pill.
With Judd missing a few games at the start, who will get the tag he normally gets? Murphy or Gibbs?
Its early yet but my list of draftees who I believe will start Round 1 are: Morabito, Sheppard, Martin, Cunnington, Tapscott. Not sure Scully & Trengove will get a birth too early unless they blitz during the pre-season.
Anyone else with any thoughts???
I’m loving the look of Morabito. There was an article I read this morning about Freo and their “elite performance program” – http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/87700/default.aspx – which sounds pretty promising.
Alternativelty, Jesse Smith has a new run – http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/87696/default.aspx – Which was Drummonds claim to fame last pre-season. Which worked an utter treat for him.
hahaha laughing at Sainters over Luke Ball!
Ball looks an interesting prospect for sides next year. Would think Buckley would be struggling to get a game when the Pies’ back 6 is pretty settled and he’s not a utility (from what I’ve heard)
Heater, Pendlebury will still get a lot of the pill. If anything he will be more effective with it, but one of our better clearance players will remain so. Ball will probably slot in as the Magpies tagger for the early part of the season.
Judd gone; tag Murphy. Gibbs will need to step up but I think he’s probably capable.
Walesy on the picks…
I reckon Trengove is the one to watch from Melbourne, I think Martin will get a run at Richmond before too long, and I agree Morabito looks something special. Cunnington should get a gig.
Scully I predict will win Rising Star 2011 if Melbourne take their time with the kid.
We will probably have to wait until the NAB Cup until we see something in terms of where players will find a spot in the teams.
For the recycled:
Ball – will get a game regularly in the Magpie midfield – tagger
Smith – needs to get fit and that could take a while
Hooper – will have a chance of replacing Williams but won’t be as good
Pattison – rolled gold dud
Buckley – too soon to tell but unlikely to get a run
Go the Woods. Happy to have Jolly and Ball from the trading period into our best 22.
Ah yeah Maguire another recycled – he would be not in the Lions top defenders but good backup for Merrett and Patfull. No chance of a gig up forward!
Quick query – how reliable do you think M0nty’s SC values are in the fanplanner as a guide for 2010?
It would be good to steal a march on the opposition in planning our victory for the Supercoach, and Dreamteam potentially.
Very reliable.
It’s why I didn’t bother knocking up a planner myself this year. It’s a fantastic resource he’s got there.
Sure, he takes a few liberties with positional changes and player discounts- And at least gets the later correct a good percentage of the time.
I think the player discounts are something to be wary of. mOnty applies an automatic 40% discount for players who’ve missed a season. This is a best case scenario. Last year Cousins received a 10% discount which meant he was 150K more expensive than the fanplanner. If Warnock gets a 10% discount he’ll be around 240K. Leave some room in your salary cap if you take discounted players. I’ll be amazed if Kennelly gets a 40% discount when his absence wasn’t injury based.
It’s a great tool so long as you don’t get too attached to your ‘potential’ team.
Spot on, wal. Monty has Goodes as a centre/forward which in the ideal world he would be but I wonder if he will remain a centre only again this year… Its for this reason you take Monty’s stuff with a grain of salt. Anyway until we see the pre-season form of some of the fringe players especially the ones who are coming back from injury (Josh Hunt) or those who have switched clubs (Maguire) its a bit hard to plan your side with any degree of comfort…..
