Contested Possessions.

Chris, you asked earlier if Ablett was the #1 contested ball getter for 09.

Well, I’ve finally massaged TS to give it up. And here’s the top five. (in order of *most* contested possessions.)

#: Name: Contested possessions at their percentage of contested possessions in relation to their total possessions.

#1: Chris Judd. 246 at 41.2%
#2: Gary Ablett. 245 at 34.51%
#3: Dane Swan. 244 at 32.44%
#4: Joel Selwood. 231 as 35.11%
#5: Matthew Boyd. 231 at 32.08%

Looking at it as a relation to their total possessions however, has it all being rucks (unsurprising), with Nicholas Naitanui leading the charge with 66.33% of his possessions being contested.

The highest percentage for Non-rucks are.

Daniel Kerr: 53.8%
Hayden Ballantyne: 49.31%
Patrick Dangerfield: 48.72%
Eddie Betts: 48.13%
Jason Porplyzia: 47.38%

Which while unhelpful, is interesting. :) But more importantly, means I’ve got a bunch of data available for use now that I previously didn’t have. Rock and Roll. :)

Lucas, if there wasn’t a game on tonight, your high/low salaries would be implemented. But since there is- you’ll have to wait over the weekend…

Carn the Bombers!

    hmmm, Dangermouse….the plot thickens!

    nom nom nom

  3. Lucas says:

Haha to all those who see Swannie as an outside receiver. Go the mighty Danewin. More than Selwood – even I wouldn’t have predicted that!

I would have thought Kerr was a more interesting stat than Dangermouse (because at least Kerr will get 50% of something rather than 48% of stuff all) but each to their own.

  4. walesy says:

It helps when you get the ball 100 more times. :P Either way though, he works hard for it.

  5. Ben says:

Too bad he butchers it most of the time.

  6. walesy says:

    Another handy dandy stat.

Stephen Gilham has the highest efficiency rating, with him and Zac Dawson being the only players, with more than 100 touches, to dispose of the ball with over 90% efficiency.

    Gaz is sitting on 75.94
    Swan on 70.43

And only 4 players are sitting under 60%

    Stevie J – 56.45
    Jack Riewoldt – 56.65
    Brendan Fevola – 57.83
    Russell Robertson – 58.9

But that would be because behinds are ineffective. :)

  7. JJ says:

who’s sitting in the 80-90 range?

  8. walesy says:

Gah, I’m lazy and slightly inebriated, so I’m not gunna bother rounding it…

  13. mark1 says:

Lucas, its who Kerr hits whilst getting that contested possy that worries me!

  14. Lucas says:

    In defence of Swan…

I think it was shown last year that Swan has a better disposal efficiency than Judd. As a Pie fan I think Swan is a good user of the ball surrounded by silkier skills. Swan rarely turns the ball over directly, but his ball isn’t the bullet that obviously others possess. Mind you I’ll take the 70% efficiency with the most possessions in history.

Surprised Franklin is not in the “below 60%” group. Maybe he is in the “below 50% group”…

  15. JJ says:

Thanks for that. Daniel cross, now there’s a guy I’ve kind of forgotten about. i’m getting a tad geelong heavy (5 atm), maybe he’d be an option over bartel/selwood.

  16. walesy says:

ha! Don’t do that Spud, I’m meant to be working this afternoon!

Hate to burst your bubble Lucas, but I think you might find Judd with 70.69%… ;)

But yeah, it’s not the kind of efficiency you would sneeze at.

    Franklin was on 63.03%

  17. Benny says:

Yeah Swan hits the target but his kicks aren’t great to look at. Points aren’t handed out for that though.
I’m still between Swan/Pendles for my 2nd mid. I think Pendlebury has the potential to score just as well as Swan. He was leading overall points before he got injured. But Swan is not that much more in terms of money. Pendles is ahead at this stage and will probably get the nod.

  18. Ben says:

Pendlebury led the entire competition in total points scored shortly before he got injured last season, he is essentially a Dal Santo clone, smooth skills and great user of the footy. Hard to see anyone not selecting him even though his starting price is more than what was expected.

  19. Christos says:

The stats are interesting but you’ll notice that every single player in the 80+ range is a defender (except Simon Taylor who always handballs) – as predicted by Champion Data. You need to compare averages amongst similar players. Hitting a target inside 50 (under no pressure) is a lot harder than passing the ball sideways or backwards to unmarked defenders a la Gilham and Zac Dawson.

Similarly an outsider mid should average higher disposal efficiency than an outside mid due to reduced pressure.
