NAB Challenge squads
EDIT – Latest teams are over the break (click more)
Alrighty, it’s the last weekend of footy before lockout. Meaning this is our last chance to see anything before getting our team locked in for the year.
Also, it’s this week that is usually a good indicator on what a team thinks their best 18 will look like.
So the final challenge matches are out, let’s see what we’ve got.
BRISBANE LIONS V HAWTHORN
Brisbane Lions
1. Mitch Clark, 2. Albert Proud, 4. Travis Johnstone, 5. Brendan Fevola, 6. Luke Power, 7. Jed Adcock, 8. Matt Austin, 9. Ashley Mcgrath, 10. Daniel Rich, 11. Justin Sherman, 12. James Hawksley, 14. Brent Staker, 16. Jonathan Brown, 17. Jared Brennan, 18. Todd Banfield, 20. Simon Black, 21. Daniel Merrett, 22. Tom Collier, 23. Matthew Leuenberger, 24. Joel Patfull, 29. Andrew Raines, 30. Jack Redden, 31. James Polkinghorne, 32. Cheynee Stiller, 33. Amon Buchanan, 35. Michael Rischitelli, 36. Matt Maguire, 38. Tom Rockliff, 39. Josh Drummond.
There are some definite rookie priced options on the table up in Queensland. It’ll be great to get a look at their gametime this weekend.
Hawthorn
2. Jarryd Roughead, 3. Jordan Lewis, 4. Rick Ladson, 5. Sam Mitchell, 6. Josh Gibson, 7. Michael Osborne, 8. Xavier Ellis, 10. Chance Bateman, 15. Luke Hodge 18. Brent Guerra, 19. Jarryd Morton, 20. Ben Stratton, 41. Taylor Duryea, 42. Wayde Skipper, 45. Jarrod Kayler-Thomson, 48. Carl Peterson.
Lewis and Ladson not being injured makes for some great news for Hawk fans.
JKT should be on our radars as well!
CARLTON v ADELAIDE
Carlton
1. Andrew Walker, 2. Jordan Russell, 3. Marc Murphy, 4. Bryce Gibbs, 5. Chris Judd, 6. Kade Simpson, 7. Brock McLean, 8. Matthew Kreuzer, 10. Richard Hadley, 11. Robert Warnock, 12. Mitch Robinson, 13. Chris Yarran, 15. Steven Browne, 16. Shaun Grigg, 17. Setanta O’hAilpin, 18. Paul Bower, 19. Eddie Betts, 23. Lachie Henderson, 26. Joe Anderson, 29. Heath Scotland, 30. Jarrad interests me the most here. 25ppg underpriced at the moment, if he can come close to that, he’s a bargain.

Phil Davis is back!
SYDNEY SWANS v NORTH MELBOURNE
Sydney Swans
1. Mark Seaby, 2. Rhyce Shaw, 3. Jarrad McVeigh, 4. Dan Hanneberry, 5. Ryan O’Keefe, 6. Craig Bolton, 9. Nick Malceski, 11. Ed Barlow, 12. Josh Kennedy, 15. Kieren Jack, 16. Gary Rohan, 17. Tadhg Kennelly, 18. Jesse White, 21. Ben McGlynn, 24. Jude Bolton, 25. Ted Richards, 29. Martin Mattner, 30. Lewis Roberts-Thomson, 31. Brett Kirk, 32. Lewis Jetta, 33. Jarred Moore, 37. Adam Goodes, 39. Heath Grundy, 40. Nick Smith, 41. Shane Mumford, 42. Paul Bevan.
Rhyce Shaw’s inclusion into the Swans backline will be interesting to watch. What effect will it have on the other Swans back there? Namely Malceski, Kennelly and Mattner.
Seaby and Mumford are still of relevance.
Rohan and Jetta get another week to shine!
North Melbourne
1. Hamish McIntosh, 3. Brady Rawlings, 4. Liam Anthony, 5. Ben Warren, 6. Lachlan Hansen, 7. Jack Ziebell, 8. Daniel Wells, 9. Andrew Swallow, 11. Michael Firrito, 12. Lindsay Thomas, 13. Leigh Adams, 14. Gavin Urquhart, 15. Ben Ross, 17. Nathan Grima, 16. Scott Thompson, 18. Josh Smith, 19. Sam Wright, 20. Drew Petrie, 22. Todd Goldstein, 24. Levi Greenwood, 25. Robbie Tarrant, 27. Aaron Edwards, 28. Ryan Bastinac, 29. Brent Harvey, 30. Daniel Pratt, 31. David Hale, 33. Matt Campbell, 39. Leigh Harding, 42. Scott McMahon.
Bastinac being named is nice to see!
But it’s Norths Mid-Pricers that have got me watching closely. Warren, Ziebell, Wright, Greenwood and Campbell are all very interesting right now.
We’ll take a look at Saturdays teams as they are announced!
…
As for right now though, who interest you? Who will you be watching closely?
EDIT – Latest teams are over the break
WESTERN BULLDOGS v ST KILDA
Western Bulldogs
1. Jarrad Grant, 2. Robert Murphy, 3. Andrejs Everitt, 4. Daniel Cross, 5. Matthew Boyd, 7. Shaun Higgins, 8. Mitch Hahn, 9. Lindsay Gilbee, 10. Nathan Eagleton, 12. Tom Williams, 13. Daniel Giansiracusa, 14. Callan Ward, 15. Ben Hudson, 16 Ryan Griffen, 17. Adam Cooney, 20, Josh Hill, 21. Jason Akermanis, 22. Dylan Addison, 23. Jordan Roughead, 25. Ryan Hargrave, 27. Will Minson, 28. Barry Hall, 29. Easton Wood, 33. Tim Callan, 36. Brian Lake, 38. Dale Morris, 40. Jarrod Harbrow, 42. Liam Picken, 44. Brodie Moles.
The doggies look to be real contenders this year, and because they were good last year, and look to have the ability to step up some more this year, I really see them as an excellent place to shop for underpriced premiums. Murphy, Higgins, Gilbeem Gia, Griffen, Cooney, Hall – all need to be considered.
J. Roughhead is looking a chance, but will need something to happen to Hudson or Minson. Still, might be good for coverage in the second half of the season.
St Kilda
1. Jason Gram, 2. Steven King, 4. Clint Jones, 5. Ben McEvoy, 6. Zac Dawson, 10. Steven Baker, 11. Leigh Montagna, 12. Nick Riewoldt, 13. Adam Schneider, 14. Jarryn Geary, 18. Brendon Goddard, 19. Sam Gilbert, 20. David Armitage, 21. Nick Heyne, 22. Farren Ray, 23. Justin Koschitzke, 25. Sam Fisher, 26. Nick Dal Santo, 27. Jason Blake, 28. Rhys Stanley, 29. Tom Lynch, 30. Brett Peake, 32. Andrew McQualter, 33. James Gwilt, 38. Will Johnson, 39. Alistair Smith, 44. Stephen Milne, 45. Luke Miles, 49. Steven Gaertner.
What to say- It’s the Saints. They had a supreme year last year. Look elsewhere for *value*
MELBOURNE v WEST COAST
Melbourne
1. Matthew Warnock, 2. Nathan Jones, 5. Jordan Gysberts, 6. Matthew Bate, 7. Brad Miller, 8. James Frawley, 9. Jack Trengove, 12. Colin Sylvia, 13. Jordie McKenzie, 14. Lynden Dunn, 15. Ricky Petterd, 18. Brad Green, 19. Addam Maric, 22. Brent Moloney, 23. James McDonald, 25. Kyle Cheney, 29. Michael Newton, 30. Tom McNamara, 31. Tom Scully, 32. Cameron Bruce, 33. Austin Wonaeamirri, 34. Stefan Martin, 36. Aaron Davey, 38. Daniel Hughes, 40. Mark Jamar, 42. Jake Spencer, 43. Jamie Bennell, 44. Rohan Bail, 47. James Strauss
This is the game we’re all waiting for.
Scully and Trengove – what are they gunna do?
Strauss- gotta be watched.
Wonaeamirri! Beautifully priced and back from injury.
But no Macdonald? I wonder what the deal is.
West Coast
1. Mitch Brown, 2. Mark LeCras, 4. Daniel Kerr, 5. Brad Ebert, 6. Mark Nicoski, 7. Chris Masten, 8. Beau Waters, 9. Nic Naitanui, 10. Scott Selwood, 11. Matt Priddis, 12. Brad Sheppard, 13. Luke Shuey, 14. Koby Stevens, 15. Tom Swift, 16. Eric Mackenzie, 17. Josh Kennedy, 20. Dean Cox, 24. Matt Rosa, 26. Sam Butler, 29. Ashley Hansen, 30. Matt Spangher, 31. Will Schofield, 32. Andrew Embley, 35. Pat McGinnity, 37. Adam Selwood, 38. Brett Jones, 40. Will Sullivan
Nic Nat. One more chance to watch him dominate against sub-par competition.
If he can dominate again, he’s going to lock himself into a lot of teams. But what if he scores 50?
Sheppard and Shuey. Gotta watch these boys.
RICHMOND v ESSENDON
Richmond
2. Will Thursfield, 3. Brett Deledio, 5. Troy Simmonds, 6. Graham Polak, 8. Jack Riewoldt, 9. Trent Cotchin, 10. Shane Edwards, 15. Mitch Farmer, 16. Luke McGuane, 17. Chris Newman, 19. Daniel Connors, 20. Mitch Morton, 23. Daniel Jackson, 26. Robin Nahas, 27. Tom Hislop, 29. Tyrone Vickery, 30. Richard Tambling, 31. Adam Thomson, 32. Ben Cousins, 33. David Gourdis, 34. Andrew Browne, 36. Dustin Martin, 40. Kel Moore, 44. Troy Taylor, 47. Ben Nason, 50. Relton Roberts
It’s the big two in the midfield for mine, but as with Melbourne, there’s potential everywhere.
Essendon
1. Jay Neagle, 2. Ricky Dyson, 3. Scott Gumbleton, 4. Jobe Watson, 5. Brent Stanton, 6. Angus Monfries, 8. Jason Winderlich, 9. Brent Prismall, 11. David Zaharakis, 12. Andrew Welsh, 14. Sam Lonergan, 15. Courtenay Dempsey, 16. Tayte Pears, 17. Jake Melksham, 19. David Hille, 20. Henry Slattery, 23. David Myers, 26. Cale Hooker, 27. Jason Laycock, 29. Alwyn Davey, 30. Patrick Ryder, 31. Dustin Fletcher, 33. Mark Williams, 34. Kyle Hardingham, 37. Kyle Reimers, 39. Heath Hocking, 40. Ben Howlett, 43. Bachar Houli
Flag favorites. Lock in 22.
Durability picks Gumbleton, Hille and Myers step up to the plate in this game, as an Essendon fan, I’m excited. As a SuperCoach, I’m still planing to steer clear.
PORT ADELAIDE v COLLINGWOOD
Port Adelaide
1. Domenic Cassisi, 3. Steven Salopek, 4. Daniel Motlop, 6. Danyle Pearce, 7. Nathan Krakouer, 9. Jacob Surjan, 10. Travis Boak, 14. Paul Stewart, 16. Warren Tredrea, 17. Robbie Gray, 18. Kane Cornes, 19. Nick Salter, 20. Dean Brogan, 21. Matthew Thomas, 22. Jay Nash, 23. Matthew Lobbe, 26. Andrew Moore, 27. Alipate Carlile, 28. Jay Schulz, 31. Mitchell Banner, 33. Brett Ebert, 35. Chad Cornes, 38. Scott Harding, 39. Justin Westhoff, 41. Jason Davenport, 43. Daniel Stewart, 45. Cameron Hitchcock.
A surprising amount of value from the Power this year. A lot of rookies in Lobbe, Moore, Banner and Hitchcock.
Gray will need to be followed to see if he can follow up last weeks top effort.
Krakouer has put up some worrying numbers these past few weeks. Gotta keep an eye on him.
Collingwood
1. Leon Davis, 3. John McCarthy, 4. Alan Didak, 5. Nick Maxwell, 7. Paul Medhurst, 8. Harry O’Brien, 9. John Anthony, 10. Scott Pendlebury, 11. Shane O’Bree, 12. Luke Ball, 13. Dale Thomas, 14. Anthony Corrie, 15. Leigh Brown, 18. Darren Jolly, 20. Ben Reid, 21. Sharrod Wellingham, 24. Tarkyn Lockyer, 25. Josh Fraser, 26. Ben Johnson, 29. Ryan Cook, 30. Brent Macaffer, 31. Chris Dawes, 32. Travis Cloke, 34. Alan Toovey, 35. Simon Prestigiacomo, 36. Dane Swan, 39. Heath Shaw, 41. Simon Buckley, 43. Jaxson Barham
Luke Ball. Averaged 86 in 80 minutes at the Saints. Will be great to see the kind of gametime he gets in this game.
Ben Reid and Buckley – Great potential value, but will need something big to stay on my list.
FREMANTLE v GEELONG CATS
Fremantle
2. Anthony Morabito, 3. Byron Schammer, 4. Paul Hasleby, 5. Garrick Ibbotson, 6. Greg Broughton, 8. Nick Suban, 9. Adam McPhee, 11. Des Headland, 15. Ryan Crowley, 18. Luke McPharlin, 19. Clayton Hinkley, 20. Chris Tarrant, 21. Michael Barlow, 23. Chris Mayne, 25. Steven Dodd, 26. Kepler Bradley, 27. Justin Bollenhagen, 28. Ryan Murphy, 29. Matthew Pavlich, 30. Zac Clarke, 31. Aaron Sandilands, 32. Stephen Hill, 37. Michael Johnson, 38. Michael Walters, 41. Paul Duffield, 43. Roger Hayden, 44. Jesse Crichton, 46. Clancee Pearce, 47. Jay van Berlo
Another team with two big rookie mids and a bunch of value elsewhere. Will be watching them closely against a class cats outfit.
Geelong Cats
3. Jimmy Bartel, 4. Andrew Mackie, 5. Travis Varcoe, 6. Brad Ottens, 7. Harry Taylor, 8. Josh Hunt, 9. James Kelly, 13. Tom Lonergan, 14. Joel Selwood, 17. Shannon Byrnes, 20. Steven Johnson, 21. Cameron Mooney, 22. Mitchell Duncan, 24. Mark Blake, 26. Tom Hawkins, 29. Gary Ablett, 30. Matthew Scarlett, 31. James Podsiadly, 32. Steven Motlop, 35. Paul Chapman, 39. Darren Milburn, 40. David Wojcinski, 44. Corey Enright, 45. Cameron Ling
The cats are looking back to full strength with Corey the only big name missing.
Will be good to see Ottens have a hit out.
Stevie J offers some potential if he’s over that groin issue of last year.
In Jan I predicted a breakout year for Hawkins. If he can put up a decent score against a young Dockers outfit- then maybe?
Enright has been tearing it up this NAB.
Big Gaz – coming up against his bogie side in Freo, and Creepy Crowley. Personally, I’m expecting a low score. Am just hoping he doesn’t get himself injured!
Anyone jumping on the Josh Drummond rollercoaster this year? There has been no mention of him at all this year. Has everyone been scared off because of this injury history?
Drummond would be my first played picked if he wasn’t as injury prone as he is. At almost $540k this season the price might be a bit too much to justify the risk.
A lot of talk about Gray and Higgins, not much love for Le Cras though who is a similar price & type of player, any reason behind this? Le Cras had a huge end to 2009. I’m torn between he and Gray.
Drummond was pretty good value last year @$480k (although, interestingly, only if you traded him out after his round 11 injury, for $498k after averaging 101 up till that point – if you kept him the whole year he gave you only $440k value based on a 22 game average of 82.86) but this year there’s just no value in him. He only has two really low scores bringing his overall value down, including the 3 when he got injured, and you just can’t see him playing more than 18-20 games at a similar sort of average. A lot of risk and no upside I’d say.
DEF – Goddard, Enright, Adcock, Hodge, Hooker, Malceski, Ladson (Maguire, Davis)
MID – Ablett, Bartel, Hayes, Boyd, Trengove J, Martin (Jetta, Shuey)
RUCK – Hille, Nicnat (Warnock, Trengove)
FWD – Riewoldt, O’Keefee, Gray R, Medhurst, Hall, Dangerfield, Rohan (Rockliff, Hitchcock)
this is my current DT side. obviously taking the punt that having four premium mids and three-four premium def will make up for only having two premium forwards and no premium rucks. I am confident (but not convinced) that my fwds will fill the gap..
thoughts??
Just running some more numbers on that – it’s really interesting how much a players value gets dragged down by a small number of injury affected games. 4 of drummond’s games were affected by injury last year – the three that he missed and the one where he got injured and scored 3. No one could have predicted the injury, but there was at least a chance if you held on to him that you could have subbed a bench player for him (although given the carnage in the backline last year, his injury definitely could have left you with donuts at that time of year). Here’s his implied yearly value given various substitution scenarios. Remember that he started at $480k so you’d want a fair bit more than that to make it worthwhile:
0 (donuts): $440k
40ppg: $469k
60: $483k
So to just break even on him, you’d need to have had a 60ppg rookie sub available at that time.
Moral of the story: injury risk players are bad news and you can gain a lot of value through durability.
@ Andrew – I think Gray is getting the attention becuase he can and does play midfield more as well as forward so has the potential to get some good scores. Le Cras is definately worth a thought but in my opinion is a little more one dimensional that Gray so he is more reliant on WCE’s midfield dominating and getting the ball to him…..
Just on Drummond: His 3 doesnt seem to be counted in his price for some reason. His stats as listed when you try to select him show one less game and a higher avg (and corresponding price) than is listed on here.
oh wow, you’re absolutely right. His average including the 3 is 95.9=$509k. His average not including the 3 is 101 = $537k. That’s really bad, I guess Champion made a subjective decision to not include averages on games where a player got injured early or something? I’m pretty sure Harvey and Pendles’ 0s weren’t counted either, I thought it’d only be 0s though.
Wow – that’s a strange one – very subjective.
Drummond at 509K becomes much more tempting than at 537K as well.
Interesting indeed
I wonder if they did the same thing with anyone else, if so where do you draw the line?
Might look at Waite…I think he got 7 or something when he did his knee…
I can’t think of any others to test off the top of my head. both ottens and waite got injury discounts so you can’t work out what their proper cost is.
Don’t think I’ve heard anyone take any interest in Cousins this year, but just for any that might be
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/ben-cousins-back-in-hospital/story-e6frf9io-1225840971585
Cliff-notes:
Has been having abdominal pain for 5 days, thought to be a mild gastric inflamation (whatever that is), re0admitted to hospital today after it got worse, may be in doubt for rnd 1.
The only other one I can think of that played enough games to not get a discount is Sewell…but he scored he had already scored 65 when he got sledgehammered….
Anyone know how selwood is?
From what I heard they didnt seem too concerned about Selwood – a knock rather than a strain?
On the value picks in the backline, anyone know much about Greenwoods role this year – I think I read he gets used mostly as a tagger?
Yes I have heard Greenwood is going to be a tagger this year. But in an evolving North Midfield I think there will be plenty of changing roles over the year.
First of Rookie elevations announced. Polak and Roberts for the Tiges
http://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/6301/newsid/90594/default.aspx
Great news about Roberts, he put up some big numbers in the pre-season, another cheap fwd bench option to consider now.
F9 for me was always Troy taylor, but now, I’m not sure, maybe Roberts is a better choice? Who do you think will play more this year guys?
Depend on the court case for a start. Apart from that Roberts is 24 and Taylor 18. I would expect Roberts to get more games due to this. Then it all comes down to form and injuries.
Reports out west…..Van Berlo down for 4 weeks with shin splints, Barlow upgraded to main list.
Think it was deBoer with the splints Simo…& yep Tony was a given.
Disappointed that Polak was elevated. Has not earned it – Gourdis has played much better.
That said, Roberts is an interesting one – you’d think he’d be in from round 1 now.
And for anyone else looking for that cheap defender or D9 option, Ben Nason has firmed futher into calculations for a spot in the early going, maybe even in Round 1.
Hitchcock or Gumby at f8?….and do you think JKT will (or has he) been elevated and play r1?
Hitchcock. Skipper would have been elevated for the Hawks, how many others can they elevate?
How many can the Hawks elevate? As many LTIs – and from my recollections, Max Bailey will be one, Simon Taylor two, and I’m sure they can wangle some excuse about Trent Croad to get another.
So Barlow up, any word about the others? I’m particularly interested in Silvagni…
Yep, Hawks Have 3 Lucas, Skipper has to take one spot and i’d expect the other 2 to go to Moss and JKT. The only other I see as being in contention would be Riley Milne.
Just reading the BF boards who saw the news report Stu…..Barlow could be the only one – at least for now. It seemed they’d keep the picks up their sleeve for when needed….
“Senior List Manager Simon was just on 6pr and said that Barlow is the only one promoted because they have to name one for Grover being on the veteran list and that it will be taken week by week for the rest of the places.”……about 3 hrs ago
Hawthorn…..Clarko interviewed on SEN this morning…..when asked for an SC smokie….”Peterson, he’s a beauty”
That could be one of the spots they have, along with Skipper. Would have to think Moss & JKT have the others, if they dont keep the picks in their pocket.
Thanks Simonoz. Dissapointing about Silvags!
What are peoples thoughts on Adam Goodes this season, I was wondering if he will score as well as last year with his redefined forward role, when there could be more upside in cheaper options?? Thoughts appreciated
Bears repeating – anyone thinking about Silvagni as their D9 and disappointed he wasn’t elevated, keep an eye on Ben Nason. 94K back with a show to play early – possibly even Rd 1.
Yeah chris88, he looks the likely candidate now. Unless I decide to bite-the-bullet and go rookie mids, then I can make a big upgrade down back and play Goose at D9.
macaldo: that’s basically the way I’m thinking about him this season, I’ve had him in a few times but keep bumping him due to not knowing how his “new role” will affect his SC scores and also not seeing/hearing much of him during NAB.
^ …”bite-the-bullet and go *five* rookie mids”
chris88 – Do you think Nason would be more likely to play for an extended period Webberley?
*than Webberley
Nason is definately ahead of Webberley in the current pecking order I believe.
Stu – I did exactly that with Waters D8, Goose D9……I’m much happier with it like this than how it looked with 4 rookie mids….
that’s exactly where I got to in the team discussion a couple of pages back stick
.
Nason is definitely ahead of Webberley at this stage. Where this leaves him in terms of place in the first 22 isn’t clear as yet – but he is being picked in many longtime supporters’ first 22s to play Carlton.
And crap – http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/powers-bionic-man-david-rodan-is-so-close-to-a-comeback/story-e6frf9jf-1225841391822.
If Rodan comes back this early, Port might not upgrade Hitchcock. Then again, with Wade Thompson injured as well, maybe they still might upgrade him as the one rookie they can bring up.
I noted hitchcock wasn’t mentioned at all in the HUN’s Port team wrap-up today (ie wasn’t in the 22 and wasn’t listed as pushing for selection either). Not sure he’s got a place in the side unfortunately.
I guess there are a few other bench forward options coming through, Roberts from Richmond could be one that fills in and Peterson from the Hawks might be another one, plus they’re both rookie priced from memory.
Yeah same with me stu, ive had him in and out about 10 times now, just thoughts are whether to downgrade to a bartel, mitchell, etc and free up cash, or take the punt on him as he is so capable of massive scores…
No Hitchcock means fwd rookie choices are EXTREMELY thin….
I can’t think of many that will get a game most weeks in the first 8 rounds that I like….
Dare I say Mr GUMBY must be back in contention :O
@JJ, I seem to recall Waters not being mentioned in the WCE write-up also, like no where, as if he wasn’t even on their list. Don’t think we should take those as gospel?
Hitchcock wasn’t even listed in the players that were close to it either. Considering Williams said he’ll be a chance for round one a few weeks ago they’ve obviously heard nothing about him. The Herald Sun doesn’t know too much about the non Victorian teams.
