ORFFA Round 13 Review – NAIDOC Round

Gundagai Grasshoppers 1225 def by Darraweit Guim Dirigibles 1307

Coach Chris’ gamble to double up in the ruck paid dividends as Ceglar (128) and Nicholls (119) dominated to keep the Blimps finals hopes alive. Walla and Newnes were also good.

Look out if snoz ever figures out he needs a couple of decent defenders. Outside of the terrible backline effort (this lot were shite tbh), it was a pretty good showing from the Hoppers with 8 scores over 90, 7 of which came from a promising group all aged 23 or younger. The Hoppers are on their way, perhaps just not quite as quickly as the coach would like.

Wineglass Bay Packers 959 def by Whitsunday Warriors 1133

Rough day at the office for coach Tracey as the Packers, with exception of the superstar Sloane (114), future star Lynch (123) and Matera (95), stunk it up all over the park. Hipwood continued to show some promising signs but it’s probably room full of mirrors time for the rest.

Two wins in a row now for the enigma known as TiB after a tough first half of the year. JJK (115) was the star for the Warriors with good support from Gibson (104) and Wines (99). A fairly even effort after that but enough to get the job done. Young Lobb (86) looks to be coming along nicely.

Charlies Opening Spelunkers 1108 def by Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles 1292

An easy in for the Cows over an undermanned Spelunkers outfit. While no doubt pleased that McGovern, Hannebery, Mitchell and Sauce Jacobs all cracked the ton, Graeme was probably most pleased with return to form of Hall (94) and Brad Crouch’s first ton in almost 2 years (23 August 2014 was his last one for those playing at home).

el Bandito and his charges were gallant but the efforts of the Bont (140), Jack (123) and Zerrett (129) were in vain as 13 warm bodies just wasn’t enough against solid Cows outfit.

Birdsville Battlers 1079 def Nunawading Nuffers 1052

Basically, the Battlers were just slightly less shit than the Nuffers in the closest game of the round. Rischitelli’s donut and Ebert’s 10 were more than offset by the 5 Nuffers that failed to reach 50. In a game of few highlights, McDonald (144) was the only Battler to go past 100, while Broadbent (129), JPK (117) and Kent (117) tried hard to counter the crap dished up by many of their teammates.

Cradle Mountain Devils 1009 def by Mount Beauty Uglies 1372

The Uglies came back from the bye ready to go and dished out a beating to the Devils. Bama’s boys did as they pleased with no fewer than 8 Uglies going past 100. The Beard (141) dominated Roughead in the ruck and Dusty (111), Rooey (105) and Cyril (108) dined out up forward. For the Devils, Pendles (100) was his ever reliable self while new addition Membrey would no doubt have pleased the coach with a first up 99.

Iron Knob Codpieces 1383 def Foul Bay Chickens 1233

Ding dong the streak is dead. Yet another case of no ruckin’ worries for the Codpieces as they comfortably dealt with the league leaders. Gray, Shuey, Macrae and Hodge all went big but they had plenty of support as well. Not all god news for Jimbo though as the news that Gazza is gone for the year was a hefty kick in the knob.

As for the Chooks, just a case of too many players down on their normal output. Danger (135) was Danger, but things fell away a bit after Ross (110) and Mummy (106).

Larrikin Lagoon Lefties 1246 def Wagga Wagga Wombats 1206

The ‘Goon eek out a win over the Wombats and move to within one game of top spot. Fill in coach Len must have been shitting bricks at one point but was no doubt relieved when the scores were tallied. The Lefties contingent of Hawks were good, as were the Dunny Brush (126), Goldy (110) and Goddard (108).

Tough loss for the Wombats who are locked in a fight for a finals spot and play a lot of teams around them on the ladder on the way home. Prestia (126) and MacMillan (107) were the standouts for Lenny, who also got a pretty even performance out of his fwd line.

Venus Bay Vultures 1386 def by Gariwerd Cockatoos 1462

Huge day out for Ant’s men lead by Jack Steven’s 170. He had lots of helpers with Miller (139), Hurn (119) and Mackie (116) the next best but there were few passengers for the Cockies in a high quality performance. Only spot out of the 8 and a friendly draw on the way home, a finals berth beckons.

It’s always shit to lose when your score would’ve beaten every other team, but that’s what happened to the Vultures this week. Not much more they could’ve done with 7 players hitting the ton lead by Hulk Hogan’s 126.

Marble Bar Misfits 1084 def by Lovely Banks Lilacs 1181

The Lilacs get win number 3 for the year and create a 3 way tank tie for last place. This game was decided in the fwd line with 2 metre Peter proving the difference as monstered the Misfits defenders on his way to an impressive 136. On another day, Darcy Lang’s (13) abysmal rucking effort might have been costly, but a tough day for the men in orange meant a tough day for the Misfits. Laird’s 130 was their clear standout as he continues to torment his former owner.

Great write-up JC. Happy to have a win over the Hoppers who are at least 2-3 steps further down the track than this time last year.

The fight for the final couple of spots in the eight looks to be a close one.

Apologies for the errors, folks. I wrote this at about 1am in between trying to coax my 2yo back to sleep. Good times :thumbsu:

I feel your pain brother; managed to put out the bare minimum in our fixture, but lost Mason wood during the game. Just seen Dan Howe has a calf problem so probably down to 13 max against Lenny's mob. My players dropping like flies will make it easier for some folk to get a place in the eight. I am generous like that. o_O

Great write up JC, hope the 2 year old grows up to support a decent team.

Well done Bama's boys, special shout out to Cyril but can you tell him it aesthetically displeasing to see him putting hands on neck/shoulders when flying for his species. He is good enough to just soar like a.....er...."hawk" :)

Can I see an updated ladder anywhere?

      Thanks for the write-up JC.

The Cradle Mountain coach was very impressed with Membrey's five goals and SC score of 99 making his club debut after becoming the first player to be re-drafted by the Devils. CMD Recruiting manager Jack Timberlake was even more satisfied with Membrey's performance and with a comprehensive review of Cradle Mountain's first five years having commenced after the mid-season break Timberlake is hoping his role can extend to being the list manager in 2017, saying that Membrey should never been delisted in the first place.

Well done Bama, it doesn't get much more comprehensive than one side having the eight top scorers for the game - all above 100 and their opponents having 10 players score under 70.

sNoZ, here's a link to a site the Cows have used in the past. It may contain some background to help in the next PSD. The second hand section may be best especially given the hills and muddy conditions prevelant in NY NY - http://www.landrover.com/vehicles/defender/index.html

Nice work JC. Having raised 4 children to adulthood, I found that a right cross or whiskey in their bottle usually did the trick.
