Whitsunday (1301) defeated Gundagai (1121)

A comfortable win for the Warriors who are now sitting nicely in the top four. Suckling (122) was prolific with ball in hand and was well supported by Boak (103) and Birchall (102). A consistent effort across the board also saw six other players score 90+. However, their backline depth will be tested next week with in-form Jason Johannisen expected out for an extended period with a hamstring. As for the Hoppers, this was their lowest score for the season in a minor setback; however plenty of kids are still showing signs of improvement albeit a lack of consistency. Neale (120) and Billings (102) were the best performers.

Waikikamoocow (1161) defeated by Darraweit Guim (1320)

Darraweit got their season off and running, cruising to victory by 159 points. Star defender Rance (146) led the way with Coniglio (126), Armitage (105) and Tyson (103) cleaning up in the midfield in the Guim’s best score for the season. They will be looking to push into the top eight in the coming weeks, however will have to do so without Steven May for at least four weeks after his big hit on Stef Martin. The Incorrigibles simply had too many passengers and are now 2-2 to start the season. Big outings from Fyfe (141) and Hannebery (129) with support from Hall (114) and Harry Taylor (104) wasn’t enough for the Cows who had six scores under 70 including a donut.

Nunawading (1099) defeated Wineglass Bay (945)

The Nuffers also got off the mark, easily seeing off the Packers in a low scoring affair. Solid performances from Kade Simpson (101) and Naitanui (100) helped outclass their undermanned opponents. Despite the win, the Nuffers will need more out of Dixon (29) and Varcoe (43) if they are to push for the top eight in the coming weeks. For the Packers, three donuts didn’t help their cause and they failed to make it a contest. However, Sloane (137) looks to be hitting his straps and Tom Lynch (114) has been a shining light so far this season.

Mount Beauty (1239) defeated Charlies Opening (1169)

As expected from two evenly matched sides, this was a close contest which came down to the wire, with the Uglies walking away winners and claiming eight spot on the ladder. Big Max Gawn (105) continued his great form with tons also coming from Cotchin (104), Sidebottom (102) and Nick Reiwoldt (102). Good signs for Mount Beauty who had some underachievers and if it all comes together, they should be a strong competitor this year. The Spelunkers battled manfully but were let down by three scores under 50. Zac Merrett (123) had plenty of the ball with support also coming from Savage (110), Bastinac (106), Stephen Hill (105) and Lecras (102).

Foul Bay (1429) defeated Birdsville (1147)

Birdsville may have sniffed an upset going into this clash undefeated, but it wasn’t to be. The Chickens were far too good and look ominous as ever this season. Betts (126) and Ziebell (126) set the tone, while Biggs (120) is proving to be one of the cleverest picks in the pre-season draft. Mumford (114), James Kelly (111) Dahlhaus (105) and Selwood (100) ensured a crushing 282 point win. The Battlers will be ruing a missed opportunity to challenge the top side and know they are capable of better. However they still sit nicely in 6th position on the ladder. Hunter (124) racked up the disposals, whilst Treloar (101) has been their clear best midfielder thus far.

Wagga Wagga (1166) defeated by Cradle Mountain (1168)

Another two evenly matched sides, this game didn’t fail to deliver and cam right down to the dying minutes, with Cradle Mountain securing a two point victory to hand the Wombats their first loss of the season. The Devils proved to have too much firepower in the midfield, with Zaharakis (129), Zorko (117) and Pendlebury (104) all getting amongst it. For the Wombats, not enough big scores was the Achilles heel, however Shiel (108), Griffen (106), Lycett (104) and Franklin (101) can hold their heads high.

Gariwerd (1138) defeated by Iron Knob (1271)

The Codpieces are showing no signs of slowing down this season as they sealed a comfortable 133 point win over Gariwerd. Sitting at 3rd on the ladder, Iron Knob weren’t at their vintage best but did enough to get the job done. Shuey (151) and Hanley (148) were outstanding off the interchange with their run and carry. Waite (129) is in arguably career-best form, whilst Gary Ablett (109) was Gary Ablett. For the Cockatoos, forwards Christensen (106) and Taylor Walker (101) were much better than previous weeks. Steven (100) got plenty of the ball as usual, but a lack of consistent scores across the board hurt Gariwerd, who were unable to legitimately challenge a stronger Iron Knob outfit.

Lovely Banks Lilacs (1164) defeated by Larrikin Lagoon (1189)

The second placed Lefties were expected to make light work of the 16th placed Lilacs. However, this was a thriller with only 25 points separating the two sides. Despite an unconvincing win for Larrikin Lagoon, they will be delighted to bank the four points and look to be the main contender to challenge Foul Bay for this year’s premiership. Sam Mitchell (141) just doesn’t stop, Goldstein (121) had a big second half, while Lewis (117), Montagna (110) and Bugg (106) helped overcome an uncharacteristic seven sub 60 scores. For the Lilacs, Heeney (123) is a star in the making, while Caddy (112) showed his class. The Lilacs are still in search of their first win for 2016.

Marble Bar (1188) defeated by Venus Bay (1368)

After a slow-ish start to the season, the Vultures now appear to be living up to their lofty preseason expectations, securing an easy win over the Misfits. Gaff (132) and Yeo (129) got them off to a blistering start, while new recruit Pittard (118) provided dash off halfback. Toby Greene (112) and Docherty (104) provided great support. For the Misfits, the plethora of GWS youngsters wasn’t enough to challenge the Vultures and they now sit 1-3. Ward (137) is a star and Rich (114) needs consistency. Whitfield (103) and Hombsch (102) gave them a lending hand. The forward line combined for only 203 points which will concern the Misfits heading into next week.
