    Round 7 Review

Gundagai Grasshoppers (1432) defeated Dunsborough Dung Beetles (1184)

So a seriously undermanned Hoppers manages 1432, no reserves, Rankine’s latest pitiful effort (3) and a player OOP, I’ll just leave that there for anyone with premiership aspirations to note.

The Dung Beetles made a decent challenge, Green, Cogs, Newnes and McStay led the way but were facing a juggernaut, a crippled juggernaut that managed 6 tons of their own, led by Neale’s 187.

Dunsborough will face many sides more beatable than Gundagai in the coming rounds and won’t stay zero wins for long.

Gundagai now sit 2nd at 6 and 1 while Dunsborough are 18th at 0 and 7

Cradle Mountain Devils (1316) defeated Larrikin Lagoon Lefties (1007)

This one went according to the betting odds with the Tassie terrors comprehensively beating the Lefties on 4 of 5 lines in what was in many regards a team of men playing boys.

Larrikin Lagoon won the forward battle 307 to 264 but the Devils outscored them on the rest of the war by a combined 352 points.

Devils highlights were Vlastuin and Heppell in defence and Steele, Pendlebury and Zorko in the mids, The Lefties leading lights were Anderson and Perryman. The Lefties have their eyes firmly set on the future whilst the Devils have an interesting mix of experience and youth.

Cradle Mountain now sit 5th at 4 and 3 while Larrikin Lagoon sit 14th on 3 and 4

Marble Bar Misfits (1108) defeated Iron Knob Codpieces (1053)

Another game that was won by the betting favourites, but this one was tight and the Misfits count themselves lucky to win against a team that ended up playing 2 donuts..

The Codpieces even won the century count with Scrimshaw, Stanley and (Nic) Martin to the Misfits Kelly and Daniel.

Iron Knob are genuinely building a new team around a handful of older players, the Misfits are simply struggling to stay relevant.

Marble Bar now sit 7th at 4 and 3 while Iron Knob sit 16th at 1 and 6

Birdsville Battlers (1165) defeated Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles (1112)

The Battlers were led by Moore, McKay and Kennedy, the Incorrigibles by Dunkley and Burton.

Looking through the scores it’s easy to see the investment in youth paying off for the Battlers whilst the Incorrigibles will take comfort that whilst this is a down round for them their stars are unlikely to play collectively as badly again.

Birdsville now sit 10th at 3 and 4 while Waikikamoocow sit 3rd at 6 and 1

Wineglass Bay Packers (1220) defeated Wagga Wagga Wombats (979)

The Wombats struggled to field a full team this week with 2 donuts and another 2 reserve scores counting towards their total, that said they still had plenty to celebrate with Sicily, Cumming and Ridley all over 100 and a couple of almosts from Casboult (yeah, that guy) and LDU.

The Packers also played short with Hewett’s absence covered by Casper but had Lynch, Cameron, Pruess and Keays play leading roles. Both team’s supporters have plenty to be excited about for years to come.

Wineglass Bay now sit 9th at 4 and 3 while Wagga Wagga sit 15th at 2 and 5

Whitsunday Warriors (1204) defeated Foul Bay Chickens (1160)

Foul Bay have spent so many years on top that it must be an interesting challenge to do a rebuild without bottoming out and so far CR is on track. Whitsunday have been building for a while now and this week got to enjoy some of the fruit.

This is also the 6th win in a row for the home team, who says the noise of affirmation is bullshit?

Both squads challenged the limits of standard deviation, the Warriors were led by Andrews, Wines, Witts, Lobb and McIntosh, the Chooks by Saad, Duggan, Acres and Goldstein. The under 50s for the home team were Ben McKay who failed to show, Jeremy Cameron who failed to fire and Ben McCreery who may not know what a fire looks like at this stage. Foul Bay fired back with limp efforts from Cox, Higgins and Bramble.

The Whitsundays now sit 15th at 2 and 5 while Foul Bay sit 8th at 4 and 3

Mount Beauty Uglies (1361) defeated by Lovely Banks Lilacs (1389)

The Uglies cracked under pressure and the Lilacs broke through for the first away win of the round, clearly the Uglies crowd were either not ugly enough, or more likely, just too damn ugly to be taken seriously..

As befitting a game where both sides scored very well there were champions aplenty, for Mt Beauty Petracca, Walsh, Gawn, Roili and Fort all saluted, the Lilac’s champions were Stewart, Parish, Heeney, Switkowski and Bolton.

Mt Beauty now sit 12th at 3 and 4 while Lovely Banks sit 6th at 4 and 3

Charlies Opening Spelunkers (1085) defeated by Gariwerd Cockatoos (1364)

A little one sided this contest, the Spelunkers fans enjoyed watching Short strut his stuff while Bontempelli and Meek played supporting cast, but the real bicep bulge was the Cockies mids, Miller, Laird and Ross all tonned up as did old man Hurn.

Gariwerd have long been thereabouts but this year are a serious challenger to make the GF and be sacrificed to whatever gods the Grasshoppers worship, Charlies Opening are scrambling for Feed N Gro to get their talented kids up to speed faster.

Gariwerd now sit 4th at 5 and 2 while Charlies Opening sit 13th at 3 and 4

Venus Bay Vultures (1345) defeated Nareewillock Nuffers (1167)

As befits the consolidation vs growth status of the two teams this one was also a bit lopsided.

The Vultures enjoyed Greg Clark’s debut among the centurians with Dale, Crisp, Parker, Franklin and TFG all joining him in raising the bat. For the rebuilding Nuffers Redman and Warner stood out, Rowell had an almost.

Joe Daniher’s 9 and subsequent absences will gent some of the Vultures joy while the Nuffers fans will be relishing JHF and his cohort strut their stuff in a year or two.

Venus Bay still sit 1st at 7 and 0 while the Nuffers sit 17th at 1 and 6 and look in danger of missing out on Ashcroft.

In good news for all those, like myself, stuck in the middle of the pack, there is only 4 points between 5th spot and 14th spot on the ladder.

Thanks Len, great positive write up

The ladder is very close still, even outside this 5-14 range.

    Thanks @Len great write up.

Spelunkers board are starting to ask questions of the coach, but with a few key injuries coming back to training, they have not snuffed the lights out on playing finals this year, just yet. Coming up against Venus Bay this week may make the light a little dimmer down in the darkness

    Top quality work @Len.
Two quotes resonated with me. First, "the Misfits are simply struggling to stay relevant." It's not only the Misfits my friend. That could easily read "the cows ... Second. "whilst the Incorrigibles will take comfort that whilst this is a down round for them their stars are unlikely to play collectively as badly again." Probably (hopefully) true. But when we meet the better sides, improvement will probably not be enough.

Interesting that with the temporary move to 30 man squads there are still many donuts and its not winter yet.

After round 6, we needed to do better, thank god we did.

Now round 8 will be an interesting round, we are up against Wineglass Bay who are doing very well this season thus far.

Two near 1200 scores for two losses the past fortnight.

Nuffers eyes continue to look draftward, Ashcroft or no Ashcroft.

    Thanks Len.

Len I like most of your work here..
If the stats are available I’d like to know how often a score 13 f..king 61 gets beaten ?!?!
Surely a win is just around the corner for us, I’m sure all the readers would appreciate that :)

Thanks, @Len . The Battlers have been a bit lucky to come up against a couple of the heavy hitters when they've had a down week.
