After an eventful season, the ORFFW finals are now on our doorstep with the Preliminary Finals to decide our 2022 grand finalists!

We've got two exciting games with the Lake St Clair Devils hosting Katanning Krushers and Manildra Mystix hosting Vivonne Bay Valkeries!

As is the usual process, the preliminary finals matchups have been decided by placing the top 4 teams against themselves, prioritising matchups that allow teams to play opponents they havent yet faced in the current season.

All AFLW games are on Saturday and Sunday this round, the first game commencing at 3pm Saturday, with the Saturday teams set to be named at 5:30pm AEDT today.

The deadline for any postponed games to allow for topups has now passed, so if any AFLW games are now postponed, player averages will be awarded to players from the postponed games and awarded scores will be scaled at 75% of the yearly average to date.

Lake St Clair Devils Vs Katanning Krushers
The Devils are the form team of all finalists, currently on a four-game winning streak, helping them to finish top of the ladder. On the flip side, Katanning are currently on a two-game losing streak - their first two losses of the season - helping them to slip down to third on the ladder after sitting on top ever since round 4. In fact, these two teams are the only finalists who have sat atop the ORFFW ladder this year, with Timboon Trailblazers the only other team to have been in that position this season after they won the first three games of the year. Despite their recent poor form, Im tipping the Krushers to turn it on for the finals and get a close win in Lake St Clair.

Manildra Mystix Vs Vivonne Bay Valkeries
After finishing bottom of the ladder in 2021, Vivonne Bay have finished the season really strongly to hold on to the 4th finals position and now find themselves up against last season's grand finalists and ORFFW heavyweights, the Manildra Mystix. The young Valkeries seem to be ahead of schedule with an average age of just 23 years old, compared to their opponents average age of 27! Whilst the up-start Valkeries have been performing very well, im tipping the home team Mystix to return to the grand final and give themselves a chance to make up for last season's heart break.

    Good luck to all finalists!

The final ladder order for 2022 was as follows:

Lake St Clair Devils Preliminary Final Team

    No change

Def: Meghan McDonald, Sarah Allan, Georgia Garnett (Tahlia Randall)
Mid: Jasmine Garner, Monique Conti, Kirsty Lamb, Emma Swanson (Olivia Vesely)
Ruc: Emma King (Rebecca Miller OOP)
Fwd: Eden Zanker, Darcy Vescio, Aishling Sheridan (Courtney Jones OOP)
Int: Lily Mithen, Catherine Phillips (Georgie Rankin)

The Lake St Clair Devils were fifth on the ORFFA ladder after Round 4, two games behind the ladder leading Katanning Krushers and one game behind the teams placed second to fourth. In Round 3 and 4 the Devils had back-to-back losses and scored sub 630 in each of game so had to turn things around in a hurray to make the finals.

LSC Devils responded in emphatic fashion to average 834 points per game in the second half of the season and won their last four games, other results went their way and somehow the Devils ended the home and away season on top of the ladder.

All four finalists finished the season with records of six wins and two losses, highlighting how evenly matched they are. The fast-finishing Lake St Clair Devils host early season pace-setters the Katanning Krushers in a preliminary final. Based on the season to date averages the Devils have an advantage in the midfield, ruck and interchange, however the @FreoDockers coached Krushers have performed better at both ends of the ground with the Krushers F1 to F3 and D1 to D3 boasting higher season averages than their Devils counterpart.

At three quarter time the Devils at home are in a commanding position, leading their preliminary final against the Krushers by 96 points and also have the advantage of kicking with the wind in the last quarter as four LSC players take on three KK players.

To this stage of the contest three midfielders have reached the ton comprised of Katanning’s Hayley Miller (109) and Sarah Hosking (100) along with Lake St Clair’s Emma Swanson (102). However of the eight other Krushers to take the field Int 2 Meagan Kiely (53) is the only one to reach their half-century. Katanning’s forward line trio have been held to a combined tally of 81 which is 65 points below their aggregate average for points per game. The Krushers were hampered by starting midfielder Dana Hooker (28) suffering a game-ending shoulder injury in the first half.

Five Devils have registered 50’s including high 80’s for midfielders Monique Conti (88) and Kirsty Lamb (87), enabling the Devils to gain the ascendancy. Ruck Emma King was a late out for the LSC Devils, however playing out of position Rebecca Miller competed strongly and was still able to make a good contribution in the ruck (62/2 = 31).

    Progress score

Lake St Clair Devils 585/9 with Jasmine Garner, Sarah Allan and forward duo Aishling Sheridan and Darcy Vescio to play.

Katanning Krushers 489/10 with Kerryn Harrington, Jaimee Lambert and Lauren Bella to play.

Approaching 3 quarter time the visiting Valkeries @That KI Guy 9/563 are in the lead against the Mystix 9/505 by 58 points.

Manildra will be desperate to peg that back in the early Sunday March with Gavalas and Ashmore outnumbering Hickie for the Vivonne Bay side.

Vivonne Bay then completes proceedings via the trio of Woodland, Ballard and Cann and will hope to set up a tough chase for the home side’s Maddie Prespakis and Drennan to chase in the matches final stanza.

Unofficial scores have Lake St Clair extending their lead slightly in the last quarter to defeat Katanning Krushers by 107 points with a final score of 784 to 677. Commiserations on the loss @FreoDockers, well done on the Krushers finishing in the top four for the third year in a row.

Once again the Krushers started like a bat out of hell only to trip and fall at the pointy end of the season.

Well done to the Devils who absolutely thrashed us in the semi final.

Best of luck to the grand finalists this weekend and may the best team win!!
