Six teams remain undefeated after two rounds of the 2014 ORFFA season - with a couple of surprise packets among them.

    Iron Knob 1423 d Wagga Wagga 1237
The Codpieces made it 2-0 to start the season, enjoying comfortable win over a game Wombats squad.

Iron Knob just had a touch too much class and depth across the park, allowing it to cover for absences and injuries (to Hodge, most notably).

Hanley and Burgoyne both cracked 130 in the backline, while Shuey had 137 off the bench. Worryingly for other teams, Ablett, Griffin, Goldstein and Jack Riewoldt were below par.

The Wombats were led by the young (D Swallow) and older (Bob Murphy) with six players cracking the ton in all. Down games from Franklin, L Thomas, Cox and Bastinac proved too hard a hurdle to overcome.

    Foul Bay 1455 d Mt Beauty 1290
The reigning premiers are also 2-0 but didn't have it all their own way against an improving Mt Beauty squad.

Big Mummy's 158 led eight Foul Bay players who scored 100 or more. The midfield of Selwood, Libba, Stokes and Kelly again - as it has so often before - was the driving force behind the Chickens' big score.

Mt Beauty though were far from run off the par, with the Uglies' high quality forwardline of Rioli, Nick Riewoldt, Martin and Wingard all reaching triple figures. Nick Riewoldt's 152 underlining his hot start to the season.

Ultimately though, a solid rather than spectacular effort from the Uglies' midfield - including Troy Menzel's OOP-affected 35 - saw Mt Beauty fall a little off the pace.

    Darraweit Guim 1509 d Cradle Mountain 1347
In one of the highest scoring games in the ORFFA's short history, more than 2850 points were scored by the Blimps and Devils, with Darraweit running out 162-point winners.

In a game highlighted by individual brilliance, it was Darraweit's greater consistency that proved the deciding factor - with all bar two players scoring between 73 and 117.

The Devils' gun midfield of Pendlebury (182), Stevie J (145) and Redden (116) turned it on for the crowd, while the Amazing Zorko (161) ran rings around the Guim defence.

Alas they were the only four Devils to reach triple figures, while nine Dirigibles scored 100 or more, led by the evergreen Boomer (169), Kornes (117) and Stephen Coniglio (109). Youngsters Hill and Tyson (105 each) again provided a lift off the bench.

    Waikikamoocow 1329 d Birdsville 1236
The Incorrigibles remain undefeated for season 2014 with a solid win over Birdsville.

Both teams are enduring some ups and downs in terms of player form right now, but this week it was the Waikiks with a few more ups than their opposition.

Nick Dal Santo's 128 was enough for five Les W votes and was best for Waikikamoocow. Youngsters Fyfe and Dan Hann lent good support, and the Duffman hit form with 117 in defence.

For the Battlers Murphy and Brad Ebert scored 121 a piece, with Houli and Rich both scoring 104.

Neither team had a forward score 100, with some good players a little out of touch. Both teams have depth and talent in spades, so it won't be long before they hit their stride.

    Powlett Plains 1028 d Larrikin Lagoon 1001
The rebuilding Packers sit sixth after two straight wins, triumphing in a nailbiter over the Lefties 1028-1001.

The Packers have gone down the path of youth in season 2014, and it seems a number of youngsters are doing their bit to repay the faith coach Raptor has placed in them.

Chief amongst them is Steven May, who scored 122 and has emerged as a shining light early on for Powlett Plains. Hertier Lumumba's 91 was next best, while youngsters Greene, Aish and Grundy showed plenty of good signs.

For the Lefties, Mzungu's 113 and Priddis' 94 were the top scores. Plenty of youth at the Lagoon as well, with Daniher, Cunnington, Langford, Golby and Conca among those getting time in the seniors - something which should stand the Lefties in good stead for the future.

    Lovely Banks 1159 d Whitsundays 1131
Another early season surprise packet has been the Lilacs, with the ORFFA's own version of the Purple Haze sitting 2-0 after a close 28-point win over the Warriors.

In what was a back-and-forth match throughout the weekend, it was a series of solid rather than spectacular performances that were enough for the Lilacs to establish a small lead late in the game - one which Whitsundays were unable to close.

Uncle Paul's 115 and the Canadian's 110 were the only two 100+ scores for Lovely Banks, compared to six for the Warriors.

However the Lilacs' new-found depth saw eight more players score between 70 and 95; among those were encouraging efforts from recruits Kennedy and Edwards.

Josh Kennedy and Robbie Warnock both scored 118 for the Warriors, with Barlow not far behind (117). SA-based trio Wines, Lobbe and Sloane were the best of the Whitsundays' youth movement - all three notching tons.

    Marble Bar 942 d Gundagai 741
Marble Bar opened its account for season 2014, defeating a depleted Grasshoppers side by 201 points.

Led by the wonderful Callan Ward (115), with support from youngsters Curtly Hampton (110) and Devon Smith (107), the Misfits were able to do enough to overcome an injury to Paddy Ryder.

Plenty of good young talent at Marble Bar, with this win offering real encouragement for the fans.

For Gundagai, Big Sandy's 152 stood head and shoulders above everyone else in the game (sort of like the man himself, really). However his teammates couldn't capitalise, with only Lenny Hayes (102) hitting three figures.

Taylor Adams starting as sub didn't help the Grasshoppers, nor did Sam Mitchell's unexpected absence and ROK's concerning early season form.

    Charlie's Opening 1147 d Venus Bay 1125
In another close game, with Charlie's Opening finishing with a wet sail to square their season away at 1-1.

The Spelunkers had to draw on an extra effort late in the match, with a number of North Melbourne-based players doing enough to overcome a sizeable deficit and deliver the win over the Vultures.

Venus Bay's David Mundy (129) and Dayne Beams (115) had earlier helped push the Vultures into the lead. The Spelunkers' Hooker, Montagna and Stephen Hill all scored more than 100 in response.

However the late games proved crucial for Charlie's Opening, with Mackie, Nichols, Hansen, Atley and LeCras able to gain ground, despite the best efforts of Xavier Ellis and Andrew Gaff for the Vultures.

Both teams have healthy scope for improvement, with the Spelunkers' Keiren Jack and the Vultures' Bryce Gibbs well down on their usual good form.

    Nunawading 1255 d Gariwerd 1170
The Nuffas enjoyed their first win for the year with a solid 85 point victory over the Cockatoos.

There was plenty to like about Nunawading's efforts this week, with the hard-working Dan Cross (129) leading the way.

Varcoe (120) joined JPK, the rejuvinated Shaun Hampson and Brent Stanton as the Nuffas' top scorers. Meanwhile, prized recruit Dale Thomas (95) started to show encouraging signs as well.

For the Cockies, an early injury to Shannon Hurn (7) and an uncharacteristic shocker from Mitch Wallis (23) left coach Ant lamenting what might have been.

Clearly though there is plenty to like at Gariwerd right now, with Tom Hickey (127) and Brodie Smith (125) in good form, Cooney, Masten and Koby Stevens all scoring 109 or more, and Jared Polec continuing his strong early season form.

Six teams sit undefeated, while Wagga and Cradle Mountain make up the eight. A number of winless teams have been close in the first two rounds, and will be looking towards Round 3 for redemption.

Next week - Round 3, Muso Round

Each team can nominate the Australian (or Kiwi) muso or group they groove to and that inspires them; and hopefully have them perform for pre-match or half time entertainment. Charlies Opening and Gariwerd will be having a rave afterparty again this year.
    Gariwerd v Charlie's Opening

    Cradle Mountain v Iron Knob

    Larrikin Lagoon v Whitsunday

    Foul Bay v Waikikamoocow

    Mount Beauty v Marble Bar

    Powlett Plains v Venus Bay

    Darraweit Guim v Gundagai

    Nunawading v Birdsville

    Wagga Wagga v Lovely Banks
