Apologies chels, Ize not enough time to discuss this democratically, so hope this will do. It does not incorporate gastronomy, but does have some nice features.

The Whitsunday Islands are proud to be the venue for the inaugural Whits-Waikiks Pinot Playoff. There is a long-standing Polynesian tradition on Hook Island and it is appreciated that the Waikiks have similar traditions. So it is appropriate in this AFL heritage (or hermitage) round that we give expression to our common cultural backgrounds. We will cook a pig.

For those outback teams who are not familiar with pinot, let alone water, it is a grape, from which they make wine. Then you drink it. Sure you get pissed, but you feel very mellow while you're getting there. And you tend to say things that might otherwise sound slightly absurd if you did not have a glass of pinot in hand. Back in the day, particularly in the Hunter Valley, Australia made some very fine Burgundy. Then the frogs (no relation to Far Kew) did two things that changed our world forever. Firstly, they took us to the international court and said we can't go round calling it burgundy, because these are French names for a specific terroir, even though they call it Bourgogne. Talk about having your cake and eating it too. They did us over claret and champagne as well. So now we have to call it pinot noir, which is also French, but for some reason they don't seem to mind that. The second thing they did was blow up the Rainbow Warrior. Determined to have their revenge, New Zealanders started planting pinot, all over the bloody islands. Vineyards were sprouting up like rabbit buroughs and suddenly Marlboro Country didn't mean cigarettes any more.

So, if you see a bottle of NZ pinot noir in your local wine shop, stop and say hello in there.

Chelsea has promised that she is going to help coach the Waikiks, so chels can spend more time in our fully equipped kitchen to see what can be done with some fresh lobster.

And of course we must not forget the beautiful trophy, kindly donated by the NZ Ministry of Hurling, Badminton and Fisheries.

Tracey and I still have some Tirohana Estate 2007 Pinot Noir, that we will crack open on a suitable day.
Pure bliss in a glass :)

TiB, hope you do not mind, but as we speak Bear is heading north with the secret lobster pie recipe gleaned from the Port Lincoln area. It's as good as black caviar he assured me.

Ah, NZ pinot. Hope Australian Customs don't open the container marked "spare guernseys and cones."

Very fine stuff Len, when you guys visit we will book the team into the Estate's superior suites.

Most of the Martinborough vineyards, including Tirohana Estate, are backers of the Waikiks and have contributed to the container mentioned above. I feel the teams who play the Whits and the Waikiks may be at an advantage nest week.

    Entree: Lobster pies
    Main course: Roast suckling pig

Wine: a selection of aged Martinborough Pinot Noir

Should be "a grand old game" TiB.

lol, I don't even mind which end I start at......

We have tried many NZ wines, it's our "other" home and the pinots of Martinborough are pretty much unrivalled for mine. The Marble Bar management have tried on many an occasion to draw the locals attention to the delights of a Marlborough Sav Blanc but to no avail. Shit happens, whilst they draw down on emu Export we sip the grapes best prepping the throat for the delights of a good whiskey chaser :p

Quiet start from the Waikiks. Management made an unforced error by trying to be clever by making young Bootsma an interchange player. Fortunately Mitch (Sam) and Mitch (Robbo) played up to potential. Hence we sit on 262/3.

Bootsma is somewhat surprised how much the Martinborough reserve pinots taste like Ribena and how, to him, they all taste the same. Hope he works it out, meanwhile Rebecca has been despatched to the local IGA to buy up the remaining stock of the blackcurrant cordial.

How are your boys travelling TiB - welcome return to form for Juddy?

Bearfly was so busy punting he did not turn up as expected with the lobster pies, so we just had to make do with the import.

The Bear punting his way to the Whits and wolfing down all the lobster pies before he gets there.

And so it was. The Cows raped and pillaged, took everything they could fit into their Viking vessel and departed our shores a happy lot.

We picked up the empties and look forward to the return stoush next year.

Indeed we do TiB, indeed we do. Thank you again for your hospitality - it was wonderful.

Cannot understand how X could not see that this game was the match of the round, if not the season, in ORFFA. Perhaps fossicking and / or noodling leads to a loss of perspective. Who needs points for and number of wins when you have mateship?
