OK....here's my take and I just know I'm going to be taken to task here, but this is why I don't agree with the parameters of how POOYA is decided, and also why I don't vote. This is also not taking away from fresh who's doing a great job with this, and I wish that more would follow his lead and contribute to ORFFU, especially with match reports if you're the home team. I just believe the parameters should be changed, that's all. To me, POOYA means "pulling one out of your arse". It doesn't mean I scored 173 which was the best score this round and it helped my side win the game. It actually means "pulling one out of your arse". That is, something that the nominated player hasn't done before and something no one expects that player to do. Here's the latest example. Eagle_eyed has suggested Ryder would be a worthy POOYA, and that's fair enough under the current conditions. Sorry mate, but no way should he even be considered, to my way of thinking, what a POOYA is. On 9 different occasions before his 139 scored last round, he has scored a low of 124 to a high of 165, so why are we considering that 139 is "pulling one out of your arse". I really don't know the answer to that. That is for others to decide, and I'm sure you will. Now if Ryder's average over his career was say, 70-80 with only 1 score over 100, then maybe he could be considered with a score of 139, but to my mind , not when he's already done it 4 times prior, that I'm aware of. I hope POOYA continues but until it actually represents "pulling one out of your arse" then I will refrain from voting. Which, in itself, is probably no big deal, it's just how strongly I feel about how we decide the winner.
Yes well I rigged it in the hope that Boyd or Jones would get up for this week's POOYA award...it definitely wasn't a mistake in my write up
@choppers I agree with your post however in my view Ryder's current season form and the fact he hasn't scored like that since 2014 to me means he pulled it out of his arse. It's for these reasons that I didn't put forward Cunnington or Hurley as high scores are less rare for both of them. I do believe that helping get your team over the line by scoring so high above your average should be a contributing factor especially in such a narrow win - 2 points.
I generally agree with you Chop. The issue that we'll end up having for most of the year is that no-one will have that stand-out / break-out game where they "double" their average, and / or score more than they've ever scored in their career (or recent history). There's only so many players who average 60ppg, then suddenly have a 120+ point game, and they don't come around each week. Having said that, top scorer for the round definitely doesn't automatically deserve the POOYA - think Gazza of old (purely as an example) with his 120+ ppg average, would you give him the POOYA for a 160 point game, when no-one else broke 120 points? Obviously not, because its not that unusual... Personally, I look at how much the player scored, compared to his average - which is why I greatly appreciate the little summary that Fresh puts together for each player - and use that as my major criteria. I'm not saying I'm right, just saying this is my method. Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and criteria on this.
My 2 cents worth, there's nominations so nominate a worthy POOYA and vote for them, it's not mandatory to nominate or to vote. At the end of the day it's a bit of fun & really the write up is the best part. Myself I don't just vote for my own team nomination just because it's my team or to just the highest point scorer either. I use the write up information which it pretty detailed to make the best choice I can and if I don't like like any of them I don't vote either.
