If there was any chance of the P'Dogs sinking there teeth into the Vikings it had to be now, with Robertons heart failure it left a gaping hole in defense. The win was in reach for most of the game as the P'Dogs only scored one ton less. At the final turn Grundy out scored WHE and green which said it all for the visitors. As for the home team Mclean scored 35 points less due to poor disposal and will need to clean that up for us to stay competitive.

A few milestones occurred in round 5.

• Cow Bay scored 1,288, their highest score in FU history ever. It was only the 3rd 1200+ score they've recorded with their previous best of 1,205 occurring last year in round 7 against Christmas Island.
• It was Cow Bay's 12th overall win, moving to 3rd fewest wins of all FU teams that have existed. The 2 teams with the fewest wins are the now defunct clubs Manangatang (2 wins) and Goondiwindi (11 wins).
• Cow Bay's first ever win over Pakenham @ddsaints
• @Tomster Gisborne's first ever win over Blanchetown @martyg
• @TigersTooTough Pearcedale recorded their lowest ever score (872) and first score under 900. Their previous lowest score was 913 in round 2 last year against Southern Cross.
• @Tylo King Island got their 50th H&A season win. Their H&A record now stands at 50-23 for a win rate of 68.5%.
• The King Island (1,231) v Pearcedale (872) match was the most dour King Island has been involved in with an aggregate match score of 2,103. It beats last year's round 6 match against the Crocs where just 2,116 points were scored.

The P Dogs spent all their effort winning last week and left nothing for this week. Injuries during the game didn't help the cause. A solid win by the Vikings with Odin's Graveyard taking another victim.

 

Round 5 – Christmas Island 1299 defeated Serengeti 1231

The Smugglers welcomed the Buffaloes to Flying Fish Cove Park looking to reverse the result of the 2017 FU Grand Final.

After being accused of playing “bruise-free” footy to be soundly defeated in the grannie, the Smugglers were fired up and it showed early, with the Buffaloes’ Haynes and Selwood being hit late to unfortunately have early showers. There was heat on both sides though, with the Buff forcing Hamish Hartlett from the ground late in the first term, after he had already racked up 40 points.

The Buff’s huge forward line started to take control of the match, with Brown (4 goals) and Cameron (2) looking especially dangerous. They were receiving the ball on a platter, as Serengeti’s superstar midfield clicked into gear for the first time this season. Zac Merrett was everywhere, collecting 33 touches, Pendles was silky with 27 possies at 92% efficiency, Danger was Danger, with 28 and a goal, and even Jack Steven got involved with 29 and a goal. All told Serengeti won the midfield battle comfortably – 493 to 343.

With Tom Hickey easily accounting for an OOP Shaun Grigg in the ruck, things were starting to look dire for Christmas Island.

However, the fightback came at the start of the 4th quarter, with Lever starting to take some intercept marks in the back 50 as the Buff’s forwards’ influence began to wane. Lever’s quality ball use was driving most the Smugglers’ attacks and Robbie Gray (10 clearances and 137 SC) started to get on top of Serengeti’s midfield after being moved onto the ball.

The game was still there to be won by both sides late, and so up-stepped Brett Deledio. The former Buffalo ran rings around his old team-mates, which wasn’t a bad effort for an old guy with a dodgy calf. 2 goals, 29 disposals, 8 marks, 6 tackles for 153SC in a BOG performance.

The win sees the Smugglers move to 4-1 and hold third place, while Serengeti are a mirror image at 1-4 and in 15th. However, there are pleasing signs for the Buff, with their midfield in particular much improved, so a run up the ladder is sure to come sooner rather than later.

The next round sees Christmas Island travel to Groote Eylandt to defend the Island Nation Cup, while Serengeti continue their epic tour, heading to Blanchetown.

A move which according to the YTD averages has worked well for the Bulls with Curnow -30 whilst Wood was +13

Gisborne Grenades 1254 defeated Blanchetown Bunyips 1054

It took a low score from the Bunyips for the Grenades to finally record their first win against Blanchetown. Neither team appears to be challenging for finals this year, especially given Blanchetown are still winless, so these small morale-boosting victories are important.

Blanchetown had 2 zeroes (Langford and Brown) leaving a Brown mark in their absence. Kent of the Dean variety also barely turned up with only 28, not at all imitating his far more well-known sibling Clark. There were some positives for the Bunyips, with Laird, Saad and Lambert tonning up and attempting to carry the team over the line. The coach surely cannot be sad with Saad's performance given he is only averaging 56 for the year but managed to hit 100. Jacobs had a down game in the ruck too, conceding a Big Tap victory to Witts.

For Gisborne, it was a mostly rosy performance. Seedsman continued his impressive form with 115, coupling with the Son of Wil (107) to move the ball swiftly and efficiently out of defense. Despite a down start to the year, Neale managed 100 in the midfield, refusing to kneel over and give up on the season as a whole. Fiorini's 116 showed further glimpses of what could be a fine career. The interchange bench was as strong as Steele (100) even though Kelly missed out for one of the first times (73). The forward line is still an area of concern: perhaps the Blanchetown defenders gave Gisborne the (Bun)yips!

Meanwhile 5318 kms south east in the township of Coolgardie, the local Prospectors 1/93, Wright, trail the @eagle_eyed Sandgropers in the Derby, 2/173. Wallis 96, with Kennedy off the Interchange 77.

Match report from Pakenhams round 5 matchup against the visiting Cow Bay

It was an exciting game for the fans of the Crocs, they come out all guns blazing.
Some solid scores across the board from all players on the Crocs list with only Patton and McGrath failing to fire.
Witherden the revelation 125 Lycett 116 and Acres 107 where the stars and lots of others having 90s and 80s it was all to much for a disappointing Pakenham team.
Pakenham had Simpson 142 Gaff 128 and Sinclair 106 doing there bit but with no one else firing and people having sleepy time mid game we just couldn’t post a score that would get the win.
A top effort by the Crocs and force to come no doubt.

Over at Cow Bay the home side is feeling the effects of a few weeks of close games. King Island currently leads by 7 with a player up their sleeve.

Cow Bay: 713 from 9 for a 79.2 ave
Taranto (102) has led the way for the home side, trying to get his team mates to lift.

King Island: 720 from 8 for a 90.0 ave
Macrae's 141 got the Monarchs off to a great start.

 

Update from The Stadium sees the Barcrawlers take control in the 2nd term and lead the Parasites 12/1001/83.5 to 9/630/70.
Evergreen Mitch Robinson 130 (his 3 rd ton in 5 games) was superb in the middle, gladly accepting everything Sinclair 128 could tap down to him, and then moving it forward where little Sam Gray grabbed all the crumbs on his way to 124. Whilst Carlisle 90 and Newnes and Blicavs 87 and 86, tried hard for the visitors, the locals always seemed to have the upper hand.

At Coolgardie, the local Prospectors lead the Sandgropers 10/804/80.4 to 7/615/88.
The feature of the local scoring was a huge 139 to Ebert, whilst well supported by Miller 107 and Martin 92.
The visiting Southern Cross, with their midfield of Selwood, Duncan and Cunnington 122, 107, 96 respectively, in fine form, and are keeping them well in this game.
