Fine with what Sydney did, They still had to trade beforehand to get so many picks to stockpile, then trade down again to do this just to save value and get back into the 20's. In all instances they needed other teams help, who benefited along the way too. Same for others with academy or f/s prospects. It's not Sydney's fault the consensus of the other teams in relation to Blakely's draft worth isn't the same as the media/fan consensus was.

I find it all a bit narrative driven. So many KPF's were lost to the draft pool because of F/S rules (or even the old NSW Academies in Taylor Walker's case) years ago but now it Sydney clubs who stand to get a perceived benefit we get all this rigmarole. Meanwhile Queensland clubs continue to be farm systems for the rest of the league and the AFL seems fine with that.

Completely agree with you P_L. The romantisism of the F/S is a great part of the game, and I think the ability of the non-footy-state teams to develop young talent in those regions is super important for the growth of the game.

I think the only real problem with the system as a whole, is in the perceived over-valuing of the lower picks. People look at three picks in the 40's and say it's junk. Ain't nobody trading pick 10 for three picks in the 40's.

But, you look at this analysis: https://www.draftguru.com.au/analysis/pick-value-comparison

Say we judge a real win as pulling a 200 gamer out of the mix, picks 6 through to 20 all tend to lend themselves towards the same results.

Picks 20 through to 50, require twice the rolls for the same result.

(100 gamers follow much the same results also)

Does that mean that two picks in the 40's could net the equivilent result of pick 6 over time? I probably wouldn't go that far with it, but I think it does tend to suggest that the value of "1st rounders" is highly over rated in general.

Of course, that doesn't weigh in the "quality" of the 200 games from said players, but spot checking suggests that it wouldn't be too far off either.
