    ORFFU Round 10 Review

Southern Cross Sandgropers 1296/15/86 def Pearcedale Panthers 881/13/68

Round 10 saw @ron swanson ‘s Panthers visit the Sandpit for what turned out to be a regulation win from the home side. From 10 starts the Sandgropers have scored less than 1296 points on only one occasion with the team averaging a healthy 1318 points per game.

This week, the ever reliable Grundy, Fyfe & Selwood, were the only players to salute for the home side, this feat being easily matched by Parker, Hunter & Darcy, for the visitors.

As with most weeks, the game was decided by the lowest scores on the ground. When looking at these, Southern Cross had only one player score less than 66, whereas Pearcedale, had 8 score less than 54 with three of them being donuts.

The lack of depth at the Panthers was apparent before the first bounce when the team bus was two players short. Without a full side, the visitors were going to find it tough to worry the Sandgropers.

With the mid season byes approaching, Southern Cross are well placed at 9-1, sitting 2nd on the ladder with a healthy percentage. A start to the season like this is a great foundation for finals football and hopefully an assault on the flag.

Next week the Sandgropers are back on the road as they head to Eden whilst Pearcedale return home to host Horsham.

    Go Sandgropers!!!

Full Time at The Stadium and the local Barcrawlers have stormed home to take the 4pts over the visiting Armadillos 1212 to 1113.
Trailing by 165 at the last break, Doedee 88 and Dawson 96 started off brightly and then 2nd choice ruck Peter Ladhams played the game of his very short career to knock off Ararat's Max Gawn 130-120 and help Banchang post the win. He was assisted superbly in the last term up forward by Gray 104 and Jonas 89/45, who played out of position. Both Ryan 100 and Brayshaw 81 tried hard for the visitors, but had no answer to the pressure applied by the home team.

    The Barracuda's finish on 1,518/15 101.2 to the Buffalo's @wrightbrendan on 1,475/15 98.3

This match will gone down in infamy, this is where legends starts, this was the game of the season.
It had everything, high scoring, a couple of hiccups & a chase down that had everyone holding their breath. What a match!

After losing 1416-1488 to the Barracudas last season, it’s getting harder and and harder to appreciate the quality opposition!

    Well done @YAD69

This game will not be saved for any time capsules, unless the time capsule is meant to demonstrate the futility of the game itself. On Thursday night old mother hubbard declared that the Panther’s cupboard was bare, only to be called in to consult for the Grenades the following day and realised that the Panther’s cupboard was jammed packed with 2 minutes noodles and stacks of baked beans in comparison to the poor souls from Horsham.

And so what unfolded over the weekend was an ugly affair where midfielders played in the backline for the Panthers and the two dressing gowns assigned to the Grenades interchange bench were left unworn for the duration of the match. Ever the innovator, the Panther’s coach deviated from the common practice of playing a +1 in defence and instead wheeled out the revolutionary -1 defensive structure. The result of the match could be used to claim a coaching master stroke, although most observers would more than likely declare it dumb luck.

The mid season break couldn’t come faster enough for these two teams and they will most certainly be hoping to pick up at least a packet of tim tams in the next week to make their respective cupboards appear a little less like a depressing void.

Sorry for those wanting to enter the score onto the time capsule label it was Panthers 1101 def Grenades 769

Nuytsland Vikings 1192 def Coolgardie Prospectors 1160

Mind games started early on in the piece, coach of Coolgardie said they expected to get a flogging. Was this some sort of reverse physiology ? Luring the home team into a false sense of security the, Vikings got the jump early but was that still the plan as the Vikings were thinking yeah we got this. Prospectors slowly chipped away at the lead like they were digging for gold, suddenly half time came and scores were level. Vistors big guns came alive after the break with Miller, Wines and Parfitt going to work in the middle as the rucks split was an even contest. Short did his thing down back, but was it for the Prospectors, no forward support and the interchange may as well have stayed on the bench. With all the mind games being played the coach forgot to cover Astbury, game over right there, with a log jam for outright 3rd will this decision haunt the team for the remaining season.

Not much fight from the home team as only Heeney, Petracca, Hurn and English just managing to raise the bat.

    Vikings:
Heeney 3 goals 22 touches and 14 marks
Petracca 24 touches and a goal
Hurn 24 possessions 19 by foot
English 15 touches with 9 marks

    Prospectors:
Short 23 disposals 19 by foot
    Miller 37 possessions 7 tackles
    Wines 35 disposals 3marks and 7 tackles
    Parfitt 30 touches

    Indigenous Round 11

Groote Eylandt Barracudas 1,522 defeated Serengeti Buffalos 1,477

The Buffalos are looking for redemption for last season’s high scoring loss (1,416-1488) at home and are looking to repay the favour. They are on a 4-game winning streak taking down the Monarchs, Crocs, Grenades and Parasites having an average score of 1,336.

For the Cuda’s the last four wins have been the Prairie Dogs, Whalers, Armadillos and Prospectors with an average score of 1,355. This is going to be a bruising encounter!

It was on like Donkey Kong from the start, from the centre bounce, Ryder stood tall again all day and smashed the hit outs up against Phillips who held his own until the last quarter.

    STOP! Wft is Guthrie?

The home side scrambled down the path and pulled young Robertson out of bed and into the game who ran through the mid, showing off his capabilities, what a life saver. Jacky Graham had plenty of the ball and snapped a beauty, the Bont leading the inside mid was on fire with 30 possessions and the Corn Boy Cripps is back booting 3 goals, racking up the possessions and collected 6 frees for. However, the Buffalos were not that easily intimidated Keays had plenty of the ball, Merrett cherry picked the packs all day, Jelly Kelly smashed 2 goals and had plenty of touches and Parish starred with his touches and kicking efficiency.

From the home team’s defence Weitering was missing in the first quarter looking for Guthrie but eventually came back and played the third man up for the rest of the game, gun Lloyd running off the half back with 29 disposals, Houli did plenty on weekend at Charles and Atley trying running with SPP. Up forward Cripps of the Jamie variety only kick one, Naughton started deep in the forward line May wearing him like a glove, Tomahawk had a shining performance with 3 goals and 2 tackles. The magnificent Zorko was hot, red hot and was out of the blocks first quarter, 2 goals 35 possessions racking them up through the mid. Off the interchange Burgoyne played mainly in defence and big bad Riewoldt had a monster game bagged 5, Awesome!

Now, you’d think the match was sown up, but this story isn’t one sided at all.

The visitors defence had Ridley who was out muscled by Hawkins early, Burton played man on man and was subbed off in the third quarter with his knee getting iced, Smoking Joe only kick one and was well held by Weit, whereas Thomas started half forward , rotated through the mid and kicked a couple on the run.

Midway through the fourth quarter Bazlinka bolted through the mid off the interchange, Heppell was on fire and lead from the front an attack on the Cuda’s. McKenzie starred in defence and had time up ground where he booted 2 beauty’s and the new dynamic duo Weekend at Charles and SPP made their presents felt. Dixon bagged 3, did a lot of work on the ground, great use of his strength and SPP made his way back into the team, starred with a 3-goal revival for his team. The pace at which the visitors come back was churning rattled the home side and the pressure was on the stave off this assault.

The crowd was on the edge of the seats, the locals holding their breath, no one was giving in until the sound came, some were elated, and some were dejected but all were exhausted.

The Cuda’s with their home ground advantage again held on to victory against the rampaging Buffalos. For both teams, a well-earned rest through the mid-season trade period.

    Round 10 Match Report

Hughenden Prairie Dogs 1,337 def King Island Monarchs 1,115

Hughenden returned to their home ground and tore the Monarchs apart with a 222 point win.

The Monarchs were always going to struggle with only 12 players making the journey, but with Nic Nat (120) in scintillating form, feeding Macrae (149) and Green (120) at will, you would’ve been wondering how Hughenden could possibly win. Enter leather poisoned Oliver (204) ably supported by Mills (122) in the backline, Langford (101) and Ward (110) running through the middle and Mayne (112) pinch hitting off the bench. The Monarchs were overwhelmed.

It was the overall consistency of the Hughenden team against a severely depleted King Island outfit which resulted in a strong win to Hughenden consolidating their position in the 8 with King Island having some soul searching to do as the mid season break approaches.

With the final game before the mid-season break Hughenden remain home to face a desperate to win Cow Bay unit and King Island return home to regroup and take on the struggling Bunyips.

    BAFFU Awards

    3 Oliver, Hughenden (204)
    2 Macrae, Monarchs (149)
    1 Green - Monarchs (123)

    Round 11 Match Report

Hughenden Prairie Dogs 1,378 def Cow Bay Crocs 1,173

Hughenden were in complete control from the start with a 205 point demolition of the visiting Crocs. Sadly the Crocs were a player short due to a COVID quarantine infringement and this didn’t help their cause.

Hughenden again controlled the ball from the centre bounce with Sinclair (86) outpointing the inexperienced Williams(45) resulting in a dominant display through the midfield with Oliver (139), Ward (125) and Langford (125) at their best. They were well supported by Mills (117) running off half back through the middle and Mayne (142) pinch hitting off the bench.

The Crocs battled all day with Hopper (100) , Bolton (102) and Rankine(102) showing some resistance but trying to cover an extra player took its toll. Hughenden enter the mid-season break feeling confident it will be part of a finals campaign whereas the Crocs will need to regroup to see if they can get their season back on track.

    BAFFU Awards
    3 Mayne - Hughenden (142)
    2 Oliver - Hughenden (139)
    1 Ward & Langford - Hughenden (125)

Banchang v Hughenden at The Stadium @Batfink

    1ST QTR:
In a slow start to the game, the home side only needed to play Lyons (119) who scored his 11th 100 from 12 games, to counteract the visitors who had all players remain in the dressing room, waiting for the results from their mandatory COVID tests.
    1/119 v 0/0

    2nd QTR:
The only player for the Prairie Dogs to receive their negative result in time to start this qtr was Membrey (42), whose mind obviously was not on the job, due to his becoming a dad for the first time during the week.
Meanwhile, Banchang sent Pickett, off the bench, and he was able to produce his highest return for the season, in scoring 99.
    2/218 v 1/42

    BREAKING NEWS:
All Hughenden's players have now returned negative results, so it's GAME ON......

Should be an interesting 2nd half between the 5th and 7th placed teams, both sitting on 32pts.

Late in the third at the Sandpit and @Mick ‘s visiting Blowflys, 1070/12/89, have extended their lead over the Sandgropers, 872/10/87, to 198 points.

A disappointing showing from the home mids has made the task of reeling in Korumburra almost impossible for Southern Cross. With Docherty, Laird, Cumming, Rotham & Darling having to outscore Daniel, Sloane & Kelly by 200 points, the bookies have the Blowflys as firm favourites to take the points in this one.

    Go Sandgropers!!!

    The Parasites @ddsaints are on 767/10 76.7 to the Barracuda's on 890/10 89.0

The home side has young Idun, JJ, Gaff, Allen & DGB to push forward to catch the Cuda's. The visitors have McGovern, Weitering, Bont, Corn Boy Cripps & Naughton to consolidate Zorko's magnificent performance.

Late in the third at Flying Fish Cove Park and the Smugglers hold a slight lead over @ron swanson visiting Panthers - 830/11 (75.5) to 652/9 (72.4).

Disregarding a couple of late out inflicted doughnuts for both sides, this has been a surprisingly high-quality affair. Zurhaar’s 128 on debut for the home team being a highlight. While the visitors will be thrilled with the output of their midfield brigade, posting 122, 116 and 111 so far.
