ORFFA Round 3/AFL Round 3 Thursday 30th March

    THEME – Walesy Appreciation Round

It is that time again, the time where we say thanks to Walesy and his happy team of moderator-staff type elves who personally see to it that all the cogs and wheels and spindles that drive this great site are where they are meant to be, and are kept in good working order.

Now where does this bolt go? Anyone? Anyone??

Cradle Mountain Devils v Charlies Opening Spelunkers
Dunsborough Dung Beetles v Birdsville Battlers
Foul Bay Chickens v Wineglass Bay Packers
    Gariwerd Cockatoos v Whitsunday Warriors
    Gundagai Grasshoppers v Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles
Iron Knob Codpieces v Wagga Wagga Wombats
Larrikin Lagoon Lefties v Venus Bay Vultures
Lovely Banks Lilacs v Nareewillock Nuffers
Marble Bar Misfits v Mt Beauty Uglies

Tis a good cup, that one. Much loved around our place given the expected contents.

I have two people running around this evening. Messers Richards (def) and Cameron (fwd).

Whether I have 15 people running around this weekend is something we will wait and see on I guess.

Peak Lefties, decimated by round 3.

Def - Goater, Bowes, Hardwick, Hamilton
Mid - Anderson, Brodie, Worpel, Schoenberg
    Ruck - Ladhams
Fwd - SPP, Henry, MacDonald, Rioli*
    IC - Wilmot, JJones

    * insult to injury, can’t add Rioli to my squad
Can’t see it being a deal breaker, but if by some magical planetary alignment we get close, might have to call on an adjudicator.

    edit - Rioli added, yay!

    Get stuffed Jayden Short

Insipid performance by the lions last night, especially Bailey and Coleman, means the cows game against the 'hoppers is over after one of the nine fixtures. Oh well, more time to write the review and show respect / appreciation to walsey.

    Cradle Mountain Round 3 team

Out: J Steele (collarbone), D Rich (quad), J Hopper (knee)
    In: R Ginbey, J Bowey, J Laverde

New: R Ginbey (from East Perth in the WAFL) makes his ORFFA debut

    Def: N Vlastuin, J Lever, J Bowey, J Laverde
    Mid: S Pendlebury, D Heppell, S Sidebottom, R Ginbey (T Sonsie)
    Ruc: T English 139
    Fwd: J Gresham, A Naughton 91, D Zorko 68, J Riewoldt (Z Fisher)
    Int: T Nankervis, R Marshall (J Gunston)

After Thursday night’s game the Devils are 298/3 at an average of 99.3 - these players are in bold above

Cradle Mountain have made three forced changes for their Round 3 home game against fellow Apple Isle team Charlies Opening Spelunkers with Jack Steele (collarbone), Daniel Rich (quad) and Jacob Hopper (knee) all missing due to injuries.

A Devils joey, midfielder/defender Reuben Ginbey makes his ORFFA debut at 18 years of age in the midfield after impressing during the pre-season and first two rounds at state league level. Number 13 selection at this year’s PSD Ginbey was recruited form East Perth and has averaged 81 SC points and 9.0 tackles per game in his two state league games. Two pure defenders, 20 year old Jake Bowey and Jayden Laverde have both been recalled to play their first games at senior level for the season. After being delisted in the pre-season Laverde was re-drafted by Cradle Mountain with pick 67 at the PSD. In the first 3 rounds of the 2023 ORFFA season five of the six players the Devils drafted at the 2023 PSD have been selected for at least one game – Steele Sidebottom, Zac Fisher, Jack Riewoldt, Ginbey and Laverde. The only Devils 2023 PSD pick yet to debut for the club is 18 year old defender Lewis Hayes who will be given time to develop at state league level before being considered for senior selection.

In 2022 Charlies Opening midfield trio Marcus Bontempelli, Andrew Brayshaw and Zac Merrett all averaged at least 112 Supercoach points per game to be ranked in the top 10 ORFFA midfielders for the season. With Jack Steele and Jacob Hopper out of the Devils Round 3 team due to injury they will have only one player starting on the ground in the midfield that played for the Devils in that position in 2022 - Pendles who is still managing to evade father time and his opponents. Also in the CMD midfield against the Spelunkers are Ginbey on ORFFA debut, mature-age recruit Steele Sidebottom playing his third game for the club and Dyson Heppell playing his first game in the midfield since 2021 after spending 2022 and the first two rounds of 2023 playing for Cradle Mountain in defense.

In a massive second half turn around Charlies Opening have fought back from a 158 point half-time deficit in their away game to defeat the ladder leading Cradle Mountain Devils by 21 points in front of a capacity crowd in an All-Tasmanian battle. Congratulations on the victory @Bandit.

    Unofficial scores
    Cradle Mountain Devils 1,243
    Lost to
    Charlies Opening Spelunkers 1,264

Cradle Mountain best players: Tim English 139, Toby Nankervis 124, Steele Sidebottom 114, Reuben Ginbey 104, Scott Pendlebury 102 and Nick Vlastuin 102.

Charlies Opening best players: Sean Darcy 132, Nick Daicos 109, Luke Jackson 98, Marcus Bontempelli 89, Bailey Fritsch 89 and Zac Merrett 88.

At half-time Cradle Mountain looked to be in control of their Round 3 home game, leading Charlies Opening 735 to 577 points with Devils rucks Tim English (139) and Toby Nankervis (124) along with midfielder Steele Sidebottom (114) leading the way. Charlies Opening star midfield trio Marcus Bontempelli (89), Zac Merrett (88) and Andrew Brayshaw (84) were all kept below their usual output but still made valuable contributions for their team.

Charlies Opening Head Coach @Bandit provided an inspirational half-time speech and the Spelunkers looked like a different outfit right from the opening bounce of the second half. Spelunkers ruck Sean Darcy (132) and ruck/forward Luke Jackson (98) went toe-toe with the Devils ruck trio and second year defender Nick Daicos (109) provided drive and set up attacking forays. Whilst Charlies Opening lost the 90+ count to Cradle Mountain 3-7 they delivered a far more consistent team effort with another eight scores between 75 and 90.

Throughout the third quarter the Spelunkers began to reduce the Devils lead and with back-to-back Bailey Fritsch (89) goals during time-on of the third quarter were able to trim the lead by 81 points in the term, from 158 points at the main break to 77 points at the last change and move within striking distance. Charlies Opening maintained their momentum in the last quarter and were running on all eight cylinders whilst the Devils were coughing and spluttering along. With six minutes and 40 seconds remaining in the game Jackson flew in from the side to take an overhead pack mark at the top of the Spelunkers goal square. Jackson kicked the goal to put Charlies Opening in front for the first time of the game and the Spelunkers timed their run to perfection to take the chequered flag ahead of CMD and recorded an against the odds 21 point victory which is sure to be the topic of conversations at water coolers around Tassie this week.

The ruck was an intriguing battle. Whilst some ORFFA team’s might not like their chances against the Devils ruck trio the Spelunkers opted for their rucks to play an attacking game style and made an impact on the scoreboard with three goals comprised of two for Jackson and one for Darcy. COP’s two rucks were in their team’s best three players and averaged 115 points whilst CMD’s best two players were rucks Tim English (139) and Toby Nankervis (124) whilst fellow ruck Rowan Marshall (78) was the median player in CMD’s 15 man team. The Devils three rucks averaged 114 points and there wasn’t a non-ruck from either side that scored 115+.

In a well executed team performance Charlies Opening had only one sub 65 score, a far cry from when the Spelunkers delivered yin and yang performances with a massive gulf between the top half and bottom half of their team with some star performances offset by some sub-standard scores. A consistent defensive team effort enabled Charlies Opening to restrict the Devils to 300+ points less then their round 2 output of 1,550+ to record a memorable upset victory over their more fancied opponents. With their on-field exploits the 15 Charlies Opening players channelled Head Coach @Bandit’s infamous catch-cry and well and truly told Cradle Mountain to get stuffed.

It was the Devils who delivered a Jekyll and Hyde performance with six tons offset by seven sub 75 scores including three under 50. Ultimately it was having too many passengers and the lack of a killer instinct when they had the Spelunkers on the ropes that cost CMD victory. The critical line battle was the Charlies Opening defenders outscoring the Cradle Mountain forwards by 96 points, 359 to 265. COS also took the honours at the other end of the ground with their forwards outscoring CMD defenders by 42 points. The Devils won the other three lines, having advantages of 42 points in the midfield, 56 points on the interchange and seven points in the ruck.

One player who stood tall in the second half for Cradle Mountain when his side was under siege was 18 year old midfielder/defender Reuben Ginbey who scored 104 points on ORFFA debut to be the 6th best player on the ground and just missed out on featuring in the Les W medal votes. Whilst 13 might be unlucky for some it certainly isn’t for the Devils when it comes to PSD selections. With their two pick 13’s at a Pre Season Draft Cradle Mountain selected current club captain Jack Steele in 2015 and Ginbey in 2023.

With the loss Cradle Mountain who were on top of the ladder a game clear of third position after Round 2 will fall back and be with a pack of teams including COP on two wins. Can the Charlies Opening supporting cast continue to keep their sub 65 scores to a minimum and provide enough support for the club’s stars to enable the Spelunkers to return to the finals in 2023?

I don't believe what I am reading... I'll wait for the official announcements before I pop the cork... but GO YOU GOOD THINGS!

Best of luck for the rest of the season @dmandrews , I don't think this will be anything but I minor bump in the round to your finals aspirations
