ORFFA Round 7 – Retro Round.

Apparently gold shorts were the go, no-one’s ever been brave enough in Marble Bar, to be fair, not many locals have the body for it.

Foul Bay Chickens 1385 defeated Charlies Opening Spelunkers 1146
Clearly the Chickens took the theme to heart with their old bastards going ballistic, headlined by Hawkins 184. Dangerfield 124 and Ziebel 100 provided aging support, but no one told Goldy about the theme, with his 54 resembling an OOP cameo.
The Spelunkers had a duck egg in the fwd line, but other than Bont’s 122 and Darcy’s 114 the fans didn’t have a lot to rave about, hard to tell though as none of them travel and Gogglebox failed to feature. Ashcroft though, that kid is ok at footy.

Gariwerd Cockatoos 1153 defeated Dunsborough Dung Beetles 966
The Cockies had 3 100s, Brayshaw, Holmes and Laird but 5 scores below 60 would have disappointed the home crowd who will be hoping this weeks showing was a blip, Tex Walker’s 38 the lowlight. The cockies though have won 3 of their last 4 keeping their finals hopes well and truly alive.
Dunsborough elected to bypass the retro bit fielding what looked to be (without proper checking mind) the youngest team of the round. Tom Green and Ned Reeves gave us a glimpse of how exciting the team may become, whilst the Poo highlighted the roller coaster that is playing kids. Currently equal favourite for the Harley Reid Cup, lots to build on.

Gundagai Grasshoppers 1664! Obliterated Cradle Mountain Devils 1239
The scary thing about the Hoppers isn’t so much the 9 tons or the 110 point average, it’s that they mostly come from players who will be around for years yet. Can’t draft for shit, but boy the dude can trade! Proof that the value of the pick is two sided, use it or trade it, and sNoZ has almost universally chosen the right side every time, well done mate.
The Devils had a very respectable 5 tons, his luxury in the ruck on display with Marshall scoring 159 as a fwd, would have liked more from Hopper and his key fwds. Pretty sure his score is overinflated by 36 with @walesy’s algorithm giving him Gunston’s score when the -6 of Sonsie was real. Third highest points for so a decent chance of meeting this weeks opponent in the finals where he will be hoping for a significantly tighter game!

Iron Knob Codpieces 1048 defeated by Birdsville Battlers 1263
Churchboy inherited a dinosaur team but you wouldn’t know it looking at the team fielded this week, scoring 1048 isn’t anything to shout about, but doing with a team of mostly kids is a reflection of how well the list rebuild is going. That said no point blowing too much smoke up the arse of a 250 point loss. Sinclair Clark and Martin all managed a 100 or better, Chol managed 3 from 70% TOG
Birdsville are ¾ of the way through a list reshape, and the advance is on track, Dylan Moore had a bad night, Bailey Humphrey (who’s score may have been replaced incorrectly by Breust’s in the same coding issue as Sonsie) did worse than Chol but has a bucket of talent to be developed. Ryan, one of the McDonalds, Cerra and Smith all hit 100, Witherden is a pretty shit ruck, getting one back on field would add 60 points. Both sides have plenty to look forward to, JC just won’t have to wait as long.

Larrikin Lagoon Lefties 1077 defeated Wineglass Bay Packers 1025
This was no battle royale but a close contest nonetheless, ironically given she traded two out Tracey’s lack of a playing ruck played a big part in the outcome. Neither team’s forwards earned their money.
The Lefties had 4 100s with Hardwick, Anderson, Perryman and Lathams, but also had a 15, 20 and 24 to provide “balance”. Another team in rebuild phase with a fair number to yet play a game, they have no real injuries, just a huge development engine that has yet had the time to produce.
The Packers have had an injury whack to cope with, Darcy Cameron, Tom Lynch, Pruess and Taylor would all improve last weeks team by a margin. Collins and Hewett managed 100, Starcevich tried hard in the ruck despite being a foot short, Lukosius and Stephenson owe the Packer fans an apology.

Lovely Banks Lilacs 1112 defeated by Whitsunday Warriors 1244
The Islanders continued their WLWLW pattern under bandit’s stewardship, Jen yet another with a ruck issue, complicated by a lack of available players.
Lovely Banks were well served by Stewart, Moore, Parish and the one Wood, Bolton also did well but the depth drawn on to (mostly) fill the teamsheet played like the depth or kids they are. Horse has Heeney doing very unfriendly supercoach stuff and Amon had a bad off day.
Terry’s Warriors only had 2 ton up, Boak and Noble led the charge, the remainder played around or above their average, and that was enough to get the job done this week.

Marble Bar Misfits 1405 defeated Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles 1325
This week’s not quite but almost Rivalry Round match was the expected close contest, and I have it on good authority the Misfit’s coach was sipping a wee dram after the game.
The Cows were missing McGovern and Prestia as notable outs, not sure Fyfe is a notable out any more, but if so, him too.. Five 100s coming from Mitchell, Sparrow, Bailey, Dunkley and Finlayson with Papley’s 34 the only real failure.
The Misfits were missing their aging midfield general in Ward and some dude called NicNat who may be just as notable as Fyfe to be fair. Those that played did earn their bonuses though, tons to Lloyd, Whitfield, Daniel, Taranto, Stringer and Ballard(!) provided counterpoint to Johnson 35 and McCartin 49.

Mt Beauty Uglies 1392 defeated Wagga Wagga Wombats 1108
The Uglies look likely to be surging up the ladder and illustrated why this week whilst the Wombats had an off day on many fronts.
Mt Beauty were ably led by Petracca, Young, Ellis and Walsh, the rank and file stayed in step with only Fogarty having a real off day, speaking of days the Ugly faithful welcomed Will back with wild applause and a few flung knickers
The Wombats had 9 players score under average, Lenny is going to have to choose between Riot Act or Carrot Stick for next week. Sicily and Pittard did well, Caldwell and Shiel were at least average, the rest couldn’t manage that.

Nareewillock Nuffers 1176 defeated by Venus Bay Vultures 1345
Venus Bay have a mostly healthy list with a lot of established stars, Nareewillock have a mostly healthy list with a lot of kids establishing themselves, and so the tale was wrote. That said if given a choice between the two lists I’m not sure which one I’d pick to manage.
For the Vultures Docherty, Houston, Parker, O’Meara (remember him?), Greene and Pickett all hit 100 onfield, whilst Fiorini and Shiels wasted theirs on the bench, Gaff had a very off day while Hogan couldn’t kick for shit.
The Nuffers were best served by Serong, Rowell, Warner and Gulden whilst Cumberland reflected Richmond’s awful performance. Horne-Francis may or may not be a dickhead, but he can definitely play footy.

Terrific read @Len , cows munching their way to mid-table. Some of the cattle may be hoping for fresher pastures. If they are not culled / shot before too long.

    Great review Len, thanks

I think there needs to be an investigation into Snoz trading out once in a generation players and still hitting 1600

Chooks too good for us, but thought they might be

Onward and Upward... yes Ashcroft can play, that kid Daicos might turn out alright too

    Love your work @Len
Pretty confident we have no friggin idea of what we’re doing down here.
Lucked b2b wins, still have an anemic points for tally.
    Normal programming should resume shortly.

    Great write-up Len.

Was doing OK till my Richmond goons decided to spud it up (well, 2 of them anyway, Ross, Soldo and Ryan get a pass).

Still, 1170 odd in a slightly off week is encouraging. Onwards

Thanks, @Len. Feels like the Battlers are going backwards this year tbh, but fingers crossed things improve soon.

Thanks for the excellent Round Review @Len. You are correct, Sonsie scored -6 as Cradle Mountain’s Int 2 and Gunston’s 36 as interchange emergency was incorrectly included in the Devil’s tally. CMD’s final score should be 1,203 not 1,239. It was quite the contrast on the Cradle Mountain interchange with Sonsie registering the lowest score in the ORFFA for the round and Devils Int 1 Rowan Marshall making an impact in the ruck to score 159 and record the league’s fourth highest score of the round and poll four votes in the Les W Medal.

The bar was set extremely high to poll Les W Medal votes in the Hoppers-Devils clash with four of the top six ranked players in the ORFFA for the round taking part in this game and each of the players that polled multiple votes scoring at least 150. The Hoppers had three members of the games top quartet, forward Charlie Curnow with an ORFFA round-high 186 points to poll the 5 votes, midfielder Patrick Cripps with 153 polled three votes and defender Jordan Dawson with 150 to receive two votes.

In the first six rounds of 2023 the Gundagai Grasshoppers recorded two of the ORFFA’s four 1,500 + scores for the season to date with 1,535 in Round 3 followed by 1,541 in Round 4 to be in fourth and third place respectively on this leaderboard. It was a Tassie 1-2 with Charlies Opening ranking first with 1,593 in Round 4 ahead of Cradle Mountain’s 1,564 in Round 2. Against the Devils in Round 7 the Hoppers well and truly made a statement to become the new clubhouse leader for highest score of the season with 1,664, a mark that will be very hard to beat, even for the Hoppers themselves. Congratulations @snoz on a phenomenal performance from the Hoppers.

Although Cradle Mountain suffered a 461 point loss at the hands of the Hoppers they were actually competitive in the first half. Against Gundagai the Hoppers delivered a Dr Jekyll first half with the players good shining through to amass a tally of 764 at the main break at a 1,500+ pace for the entire game. This still wasn’t good enough to keep pace with the all-conquering Hoppers and CMD trailed by 53 points at half time. Something went seriously wrong at the main break and the Devils remerged in the second half a completely different team with their bad side coming to the fore to provide a Mr Hyde 439 point second half at sub 900 pace for the game. After Round 7 the Grasshoppers rank first in the ORFFA with 1,461 points per game and no team is averaging less than 1,000 points per game. During Round 7 the Devils somehow managed to surpass these two extremes for half a game each, playing at 1,500+ pace in the first half and sub 900 pace in the second half. Whilst the Hoppers are convincing clubhouse leaders for the highest score of the season, with their Round 7 performance the Devils have thrown their hat in the ring for the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde performance of the ORFFA season. Cradle Mountain are looking at ways to repress the Mr Hyde component and enable the Dr Jekyll side to win the personality battle to maintain the club's position in the ORFFA’s top 8.
