ORFFA Round 9 (AFL Round 11) - Indigenous Round Sir Douglas Nicholls Round - staged across AFL Rounds 10 and 11 - carries with it the theme ‘Strengthened by First Nations. Moments. Connections. Stories.’ The dramatic downturn in Indigenous player representation across the AFL since 2020 has been highlighted recently ... one hopes the AFL perhaps heeds some of the messages conveyed by this decline and acts meaningfully to address them. In the meantime, with Sir Douglas Nicholls Round upon us - as well as National Reconciliation Week approaching at the end of the month - the ORFFA again celebrates and commemorates not just those great Indigenous players of past and present, but the meaningful stories they embody and those connections they carry with them. The consistency that the team has enjoyed over the past 18 months seems to have just melted away. It looks like a pick at the pointy end of the MSD beckons (and, if this continues, a pick at the pointy end of the PSD too). Some extensive and borderline ruthless list management decisions - trade and delisting - appear to be on the radar.
Gosh it is very quiet in here. Maybe there will be some more action during the bye rounds? Midfielder Scott Pendlebury returns after being managed last week and an experienced duo return to the seniors after spending some time playing in the Tassie State League – forward Aaron Naughton and midfielder Jacob Hopper. Ruck/forward Peter Wright is out with a knee injury and two players have been omitted – midfielder Christian Moraes and defender Ryan Maric. Wright is averaging a career high 87 SC points per game, ranked seventh at the Devils. Three other members of the Devils top seven are also on the sidelines, fellow rucks Toby Nankervis (110), Tim English (105) and veteran defender Dayne Zorko (96). Whilst the Devils are seven positions ahead of the Packers on the ladder it is far closer on a points for basis with Cradle Mountain ranked fourth with 1,213 points per game, just 10 points ahead of @Tracey’s Wineglass Bay with 1,203 points per game - ranked fifth. All three Tasmanian teams rank in the ORFFA’s top five for points per game in 2026 with the ladder leading Charlies Opening ranked first in this category. After having back to back losses in Rounds 2 and 3 CMD have gone on a five game winning streak.
