Mid-season draft For the first time since 1993, there will be a mid season draft.[1] This will occur after Round 10 of the 2019 AFL season, on May 27th[2]. The draft will only be open to clubs with inactive players on their list and vacancies available, such as long term injuries or retirement. Players recruited during the mid-season draft will earn a contract for the remainder of the season, though they will have the option of negotiating terms for an extension at any period throughout the year. This is probably something we need to discuss in advance. Do we include these players If we do are they required to fit within the 28 Should they be available to the bottom 8 teams only in a seperate mini draft etc etc
I think they should just be available to anybody in the MSD. And must fit within the usual squad of 28.
It was announced in Oct 2018 that it would happen, I believe the dates were not announced until mid March
I believe in the NFL these drafts are optional and teams basically bid on players, i.e. IK offers their 3rd round PSD for player X - maybe we can auction them all off?
My thinking: We have 28 player teams - let's stay that way. The afl MSD will happen before our MSD. Currently there is a degree of guess work as to how many picks will be taken in the afl MSD. We don't know whether the draftees will be "strategic" or injury cover. We need to make 6 delists per year, with a maximum of 2 in the MSD if we delist the minimum 4 for the PSD. Those whose previous trades included MSD picks did so while there was no hint of priority picks. Disclaimer - I made a trade that included the LLL's first MSD pick. I am happy to vote for a separate mini-MSD in ORFFA, so long as we debate how many teams get a pick(s) and it starts in 2020.
The ORFFA MSD should remain as is with the AFL mid season draftees being available exactly the same way as every other ORFFA free agent is available.
Too easy, I am reading this group response @Bandit that we have no need for rule changes etc. The only difference between these draftees and anyone else is the possible shorter length of tenure
Agree, I can run a poll for a vote but it seems very straightforward to me, so let’s go with that unless someone wants to voice a concern
