Here it be, so be at it.....

My beloved Spelunkers get another tough draw against the Chooks... but then again there are no easy games when you are as shit as we are.

Left footers round... time for @That KI Guy to have a win, if he was ever going to have one this is the round.

Will start the State of Origin threads soon... the selection table is going to be an interesting one for both sides!

    THEME: Left Footers Round

We all wear labels. And not just on our over-priced designer clothes. For left-footers, those labels are very real, and can vary from somewhat descriptive ("Hookfoot") to the semi-accurate ("Only has a right leg for balance"). But instead of deriding our left-footed friends, let's bask in their brilliance and sublime skills (at least, until one of them coughs up the ball in defence, then its every mollyduker for themselves).

Whitsunday Warriors V Larrikin Lagoon Lefties
Venus Bay Vultures V Gariwerd Cockatoos
Wineglass Bay Packers V Gundagai Grasshoppers
Charlies Opening Spelunkers V Foul Bay Chickens
Mount Beauty Uglies V Cradle Mountain Devils
Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles V Lovely Banks Lilacs
Birdsville Battlers V Iron Knob Codpieces
Nareewillock Nuffers V Wagga Wagga Wombats
Nowhere Else Wanderers V Marble Bar Misfits

Welcome to Aotearoa Jen, I hope the Lilacs enjoy the visit. Fortunately, the cows are at home so we can interact with the injured group who almost outnumber the available players. We could claim to be tanking but the club is way too proud for that. :D

Won't name the team but will let you into a secret - a number of the chosen ones are on extended benches on Sunday and may not play.

Spelunkers team to take on the chooks.

Def: Liam Duggan, Riley Bonner, Aaron Francis, Jez McLennan (Tarryn Thomas OOP)
Mid: Marcus Bontempelli, Zac Merrett, Jack Bowes, Sydney Stack (Bayley Fritsch)
    Ruck: John Ceglar
Fwd: Sam Petrevski-Seton, Jack Higgins, Mitch McGovern, Todd Marshall (Nick Blakey)
Int: Rory Atkins, Oliver Florent (Andrew Brayshaw)

McLennan on an extended bench, hopefully he gets to debut for both Gold Coast and the Cavemen. Bonner on extended bench so Thomas named OOP again as an emergency.

Good to see McHenry and West named as emergencies, hopefully soon my kids will get a run for their AFL teams... hopeing those two (and others) start to show that they are the future of the Spelunkers. Griffin Logue, your time is up.

The Battlers line up for round 9.

    D: Ryan, Witherden, Blakely, McDonald
M: Treloar, Hunter, Sheed, Smith (Rowbottom)
    R: Witts
F: Acres, McKay, Cerra, Battle, (Hipwood)
    IC: Moore, Thurlow

    In: Blakely, McDonald
    Out: Cutler, Knight

Enough ins to cover the outs and we don't need to resort to fielding a couple of OOPs this week! Still expecting the same outcome, though, but at least there'll be less excuses for the players at Monday's review.

Cradle Mountain Devils Round 9 team vs Mount Beauty Uglies

Out: T Nankervis (quad), D Thomas (omitted)
    In: N Vlastuin, A Naughton

    Defenders - D Rich, Z Jones, M Hurley, N Vlastuin (D Thomas)
    Midfielders - S Pendlebury, J Hopper, J Steele, D Heppell (J Redden)
    Rucks - A Naughton (OOP)
    Forwards – R Marshall, T Lynch, J Gresham, L Breust (T Membrey)
    Int: D Zaharakis, D Zorko ((H Himmelberg)

Cradle Mountain have made two changes for their Round 9 road trip to play the Mount Beauty Uglies, one forced and one optional. After recovering from an ankle injury Nick Vlastuin has been recalled to the CMD defence, replacing Dale Thomas. During the Round 8 victory against Birdsville the Devils number one ruck Toby Nankervis injured his adductor in the first half and was ruled out of the game at half-time. Tasmanian Toby who had played every game in the Ruck for Cradle Mountain this season has expected to be sidelined due to his adductor injury for 6-8 weeks. Yesterday 23 year-old ruck-forward Tom Boyd announced his retirement effective immediately, commenting in a statement “My decision to retire now is a reflection of issues I’ve had over the past five years both with physical injury and with mental health, and they have now accumulated to a point where I just don’t have the desire to play or the enjoyment of the game I used to have.” We thank Tom Boyd for his five seasons at Cradle Mountain and wish him all the best for the future.

The Devils selected Boyd with pick seven at the 2014 Pre-season draft and he becomes the first player selected by the Devils with a Round 1 PSD pick to leave the club. Ideally CMD would have brought another ruck eligible player drafted with a Round 1 PSD pick in Tim English (pick 8 in 2017) into the side to replace Nankervis, however he has been ruled out due to soreness. Cradle Mountain need to play someone out of position in the ruck against Mount Beauty in a difficult task against Max Gawn - a 2018 Les W Medallist along with Cows midfielder Tom Mitchell. The Devils have opted to give 195 cm key position player Aaron Naughton his first taste of ORFFA action this season as the OOP ruck. Naughton was selected with pick 14 at the 2018 PSD as a key position defender but has been playing as a key forward at state league level this season. In all six seasons from 2013 to 2018 Cradle Mountain had one Round 1 PSD pick whilst their 2019 Round 1 PSD pick was involved in a trade to acquire Luke Breust. CMD’s Round 1 selections along with Boyd, English and Naughton are three players in the club’s best 15 - defender Nick Vlastuin (pick 10 – 2013) and midfielders Jack Steele (pick 13 – 2015) and Jacob Hopper (pick 8 – 2016).

    JPK
    Matt Crouch
    Touk Miller
    Pearce Hanley
    Jack Steven
    Chad Wingard
    Richie Douglas

    And several others

Pretty pleased with how the cows have performed (917/10) but being 2 light means too much work to be done. The Lilacs (984/11), with a full team should cruise home . Used to be that our home ground was a difficult place to visit; not now it seems. That's not to denigrate the improvement in the Lilacs, more the failings in the cows.

However, turnover is high in the Tavern which should mean we can offer decent contracts to the (minimum of) two new players. It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

ahm, how the hell did that happen Jen? That dodgy alice band must have hurt Darcy Moore leading to donoughts from him and E Dan Butler. Perhaps protecting for Shai Bolton's alleged hamstring problem lead to Thomas's 73 being left on the bench? Mmmmm. All conjecture. The tag of "the cows, the luckiest team in ORFFA" seems to have stuck.

Some very confused supporters during and after the game turned from drowning their sorrows to toasting a very unlikely win. And yes, takings at the Bulls Hit were very satisfactory.
