Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles 1,229 lost to Venus Bay Vultures 1,367

The finals hopes of @graeme's Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles were alive entering the final round however they needed to defeat the Venus Bay Vultures and have some other results go there way. The Cows and Venus Bay each had 10 players score over 70, however the Vultures dominated the century count 8-3 which resulted in @Fitzy ’s Vultures recording a 138 point win.

The Cows three century makers were midfielders Tom Mitchell (132) and Dion Prestia (113) along with ruck Reilly O’Brien (109). Four Cows scored 90’s - a trio of defenders in Bailey Williams (94), Ryan Burton (93) and Jeremy McGovern (91) along with forward Tom Papley (94). The Cows were outplayed on the interchange, losing this two-player line 99-191. The Cows season tally of 21,099 points scored ranked seventh in the ORFFA in 2021 however they didn’t fare as well in head-to- head battles, conceding a league-high 20,648 points and finished 11th on the ladder.

A Vulture on each of the four-player lines registered a score of at least 130, with players in this category being midfielder Jaeger O’Meara (156) who was best afield, forward Bailey Dale (130) and Jack Crisp (143) who was the highest scoring defender in the ORFFA for the round. Eight Venus Bay players reached triple figures with other centurions being defender Jeremey Howe (101) in his first game back from injury, midfielders Luke Parker (111) and Andrew Gaff (100), ruck Oscar McInerney (113) and midfielder Brayden Fiorini (106) from the interchange. Venus Bay ranked sixth for points scored in 2021 with 21,478 points scored and performed superbly in head-to-head battles to record 14 wins, three losses and finished second on the ladder.

Larrikin Lagoon Lefties 927 lost to Mount Beauty Uglies 1,383

The five Lefties in the centre of the field performed well for @That KI Guy, with each player scoring at least 90 points and combined for a total of 502 points. Midfielders Harry Perryman (107), James Worpel (100), Jy Simpkin (104) and ruck Sam Draper (101) all scored tons whilst midfielder Noah Anderson fell just short (90). The Lefties had three donuts and the seven remaining Larrikin Lagoon players that took the field could only combine for 425 points which meant that the Lefties sequence of 1,000+ scores ended at two games.

Four of @bama ’s Uglies players scored at least 130 to rank in the top 22 of the ORFFA for Round 17 led by midfielders Christian Petracca (148) and Sam Walsh (141) with ruck Max Gawn (138) and defender Brayden Maynard (130) not far behind. Forward Steele Sidebottom (123) was the fifth Mount Beauty player to reach triple figures and another trio scored 90’s. One worry for Mount Beauty entering the finals is defender Christian Salem (40) who has received more attention from opposition forwards in recent weeks and scored less than 65 for the second week in a row.

Lovely Banks Lilacs 1,141 defeated Birdsville Battlers 1,085

It was a nervous weekend for @Jen ’s Lovely Bank Lilacs who started the round clinging to eighth place due to having a points for advantage of just 10 points over the ninth placed Wombats. Tension rose even higher in the Lilacs camp due to the game being postponed to later in the weekend as a result of lockdowns elsewhere in the country. With all the confusion Birdsville started the game with only 12 players, a 13th player in Damon Greaves turned up late. The Lilacs with 14.5 players made the most of their extra players to have a 64 point victory.

Four Lilacs reached triple figures comprised of midfielders Karl Amon (152) and Darcy Parish (108), defender Tom Stewart (118) and forward Peter Wright (103) with Dane Rampe (90) and Isaac Heeney (98) adding 90’s. The win secured a finals berth and eighth position for the Lilacs for the second time in three years, having also finished eighth in 2019.

Three of @JC 's Birdsville Battlers midfielders in Adam Cerra (147), Bailey Smith (105) and Lachlan Hunter scored centuries and were joined in this category by defender Tom Doedee (114) and forward Harry McKay (101). Another six Battlers scored at least 70 points, however two donuts and a total of only 45 points produced on the interchange by Sam Berry and the late starting Greaves cost the Battlers victory.

Gariwerd Cockatoos 1,296 lost to Cradle Mountain Devils 1,438

In the early years of the ORFFA the Gariwerd Cockatoos and Cradle Mountain Devils battled it out for the Mediocrity Cup, however in recent seasons both teams have regularly featured in the finals and had already locked in a 2021 finals berth. Five players in this game scored at least 139 points to rank in the ORFFA’s top 16 for the round. A donut in defense was costly for the Cockatoos which contributed to the Devils winning by 142 points and securing fourth position on the ladder.

@anthak ’s Cockatoos had three of the best five players afield comprised of midfielders Cameron Guthrie (147) and Touk Miller (142) along with forward Chad Wingard (139). A total of seven Gariwerd players reached triple figures, with other players in this category being defender Rory Laird (102), forward Aaron Hall (128) and interchange duo Zach Tuohy (105), Alex Neal Bullen (110). The low-point for the Cockatoos was the aforementioned donut in defense and Esava Ratugolea (35) in the ruck. Touk Miller earned two votes in the Les W Medal to increase his tally to 45 votes and finished equal second overall.

Two Cradle Mountain players - midfielder Jack Steele and forward/ruck Rowan Marshall each scored 158 points to rank equal fourth in the ORFFA for the round with Marshall being the number one ranked forward. Other Devils to rack up tons were defender Daniel Rich (117), midfielders Zak Jones (102) and Dyson Heppell (100) along with ruck Tim English (111). Steele’s best afield performance earnt him five votes to improve his tally to 45 votes equal second place in the Les W Medal.

Nareewillock Nuffers 840 lost to Nowhere Else Wanderers 1,081

The Nowhere Else Wanderers defense outscored the Nareewillock Nuffers forwards 299 to 209 to gain the ascendency and set up a 241 point victory for @DaveH ’s Wanderers who had 14 players to combat the Nuffers 13.5 players.

A trio of @chris88 ’s Nuffers scored 80’s – forward Paddy Dow (89) and midfielders Matthew Rowell (84) and Caleb Serong (82) whilst two other players added 70’s in Xavier Duursma (77) and Bradley Hill (72). The Nuffers were unable to replicate their four-figure performance from the previous round with a donut in defense, Trent Dumont (28) playing as an OOP ruck against no ruck, and another four sub 50 scores.

Wanderers midfielder Jarryd Lyons (121) and ruck Ned Reeves (112) from the interchange were the only players in this game to reach triple figures. Another four Wanderers scored at least 80 – defenders Steven May (90) and Charlie Ballard (82) along with forwards Daniel McStay (96) and Nick Hind (80).

Gundagai Grasshoppers 1,456 defeated Wagga Wagga Wombats 1,065

At the start of the final round @Lenny120 ’s Wagga Wagga Wombats were out of the top eight on points for, trailing the Lilacs by just 10 points but faced the difficult assignment of playing reigning premiers the Gundagai Grasshoppers on the road. The degree of difficulty increased for the Wombats when ruck Zac Smith was required to play as an out of position defender.

With a finals campaign to tune up for @snoz ’s Hoppers showed the Wombats no mercy starting from defense with the Gundagai defenders outscoring the Wagga Wagga forwards 398 to 246. Seven Hoppers reached triple figures - defenders Callum Mills (129), Jordan Dawson (122) and Jacob Weitering (122), ruck Brodie Grundy (110), forward Jake Stringer (123) and midfielders Taylor Adams (119) and Clayton Oliver (166) with the latter being best afield. Gundagai amassed the second highest score of the round with 1,456 points. Gundagai led the ORFFA for points scored in 2021 with 22,876 which equates to 1,346 points per game and finished third on the ladder with 13 wins and four losses.

The only Wagga Wagga players to score tons were midfielders Luke Davies-Uniacke (114) and David Swallow (110) however another eight Wombats scored 70+ comprised of forward Connor Rozee (84), defenders Brodie Smith (79), Isaac Cumming (78) and a trio of midfielders. With the final round loss the Wombats finished 10th on the ladder with nine wins and eight losses.

Wineglass Bay Packers 1,007 lost to Foul Bay Chickens 1,168

Veteran Chickens Tom Liberatore (123), Joel Selwood (112) Jack Ziebell (106), Patrick Dangerfield (88) and Brad Sheppard (80) led the way with some support from forward/midfielder Kyle Langford (93) to defeat the Wineglass Bay Packers by 161 points and secure the minor premiership. Amazingly it is the fifth time that the @ChiefRussell coached Foul Bay have finished an ORFFA home and away season on top of the ladder in the league’s first 10 seasons, having previously achieved this feat in 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2019.

Defender Liam Baker (106) top scored for the Packers and was joined in the best players by fellow defender Sam Taylor (96), midfielder Luke Dunstan (82), forward Jaidyn Stephenson (74) and defender Nathan Wilson (78) who started on the interchange. @Tracey ’s Wineglass Bay Packers showed significant improvement in 2021 to record eight wins and had their best season since 2015.

Marble Bar Misfits 1,297 lost to Charlies Opening Spelunkers 1,503

@Bandit gave a rousing pre-game speech which inspired his Charlies Opening Spelunkers to enter a new stratosphere and record a massive score of 1,503 to record the highest score of the round and defeat the Marble Bar Misfits by 206 points. Spelunkers midfielders Andrew Brayshaw (190) and Zach Merrett (168) registered the two highest individual scores in the ORFFA for round 17. The Charlies Opening forward line had a day out, combing for 459 points despite having a combined averaged of only 252 entering the game. Sydney Stack (149) and Luke Jackson (141) more than doubled their usual output to be the second and third ranked forwards in the league for the round. Six Spelunkers in total registered tons with other players in this category being ruck Sean Darcy (116) and Bailey Fritsch (103). The Spelunkers finished the 2021 season with nine wins to record more wins than losses in a season for the first time since 2014.

@Len would have been pleased with the Marble Bar defense combining for 430 points including tons to Caleb Daniel (128), Jake Lloyd (108) and Nick Haynes (107). It was a very different story at the other end of the ground with Marble Bar quartet of forwards only combining for 219 points with Tom McCartin (89) being the only one to score more than 55+. Midfielders David Mundy (126) and Rory Sloane (100) along with ruck Nic Naitanui increased Marble Bar's tally of tons to six.

Iron Knob Codpieces 852 lost to Whitsunday Warriors 1,119

@TerryinBangkok 's Whitsunday Warriors gave a more even team performance to defeat @jimbowan’s Iron Knob and leapfrog the Codpieces on the ladder. Eight Warriors scored 85+ including six tons – defenders Harris Andrews (121) and James Harmes (100), key forward Charlie Dixon (100) and a trio of midfielders in Justin McInerney (116), Ollie Wines (115) and Isaac Smith (106). The Warriors defense and midfield was very impressive with these eight players scoring 788 points between them.

Codpieces forward Jordan De Goey (138) and midfielder Jackson Macrae (131) were the two best players afield, however they lacked support with defender Isaac Quaynor (87) being the only team-mate to score 75+. @jimbowan's Iron Knob were well short of fielding a full team, having a donut three-pack comprised of two in the midfield and one in defense along with an out of position player in defense. Macrae’s four votes increased his tally to 61 for the season to be a convincing winner of the Les W Medal by 16 votes.

Well done everyone on completing the 10th ORFFA home and away season, especially with the complications in team selection early in the season with AFL teams only announced the day before the games.

The first week of the finals is:

    (1) Foul Bay Chickens 15-2 vs Lovely Bank Lilacs 10-7 (8)

    (2) Venus Bay Vultures 14-3 vs Gariwerd Cockatoos 11-6 (7)

    (3) Gundagai Grasshoppers 13-4 vs Marble Bar Misfits 11-6 (5)

    (4) Cradle Mountain Devils 12-5 vs Mounty Beauty Uglies 11-6 (6)

The remaining teams will battle it out for the Zac Dawson Cup.

Devil's in the detail. Dean's analysis looking at the 70-100 range shows the benefits of having an even spread. I noticed this with the Sarah Island Savages in the FA - didn't have a lot of star power but very strong in that range (and multiple premierships as a result).

Good luck to all in the big dance.

      Thanks Dean!

I don’t think the donut in my team had much to do with the result of our game, however the depth in my squad has been pretty poor this season, with often only 14-16 players playing AFL each week. Most weeks I’ve picked 15 players and that’s all I’ve had available.

Hoping I get some players back for the finals series!

Great job, @dmandrews . That a review from you would be detailed is perhaps the least surprising thing from this season. :):p

Thankfully, the Battlers can now officially put this shit show of a season to bed. Good luck to all the finalists. The saying used to be "let's hope for no injuries or suspensions", but I guess now it's "let's hope for no injuries, suspensions or any f*cking covid nonsense".

Thanks heaps Dean for stepping up to the plate.
There were definitely some positives for the Lefties this season but playing depth was not one of them.
Good luck finalists and if there’s any coaches keen to carry the can on reviews over next few weeks please raise your hand.
