AFLX Memorial round

Every generation has unusual fads that are uniquely their own. Today, kids are into Snapchat, social media challenges, and so many, many memes. That might not sound all that peculiar, but if someone from the past took a time machine to the present day, they would be genuinely confused about what's going on here.

The AFL had an experiment a few years ago, that has faded into distant memory… this week the ORFFA community paid tribute to that, and I have penned this weeks review with nod to the nostalgia that some other fads from by gone eras have left us with. Charlies Opening Spelunkers 1273 defeated Marble Bar Misfits 904
Ahhh my beloved Cavemen… one week they are cold, the next they are hot (well ok, maybe luke warm). This week some of them actually showed up. The Spelunkers took this one out comfortably against the Misfits. Daicos (149) is a jet, and Florent (107) and Blakey (103) are finally showing something as well. Ashcroft (104) repaid my faith in giving him a gentle introduction in Round 1. The forward line has a general stench about it like a lot of other coaches. For @Len ‘s mob Lloyd (102) and Flynn (132) were rays of sunshine on an otherwise dark day

Going forward I think it would be great if the supporters could get an indication of how warm the players were as they run out onto the ground. With that in mind I have asked the uniform suppliers to look into material similar to the famous Hypercolour t-shirts of yesteryear. That way when they players run out the crowd can see who is actually up for the game, and who is going to be truly shit.

Mount Beauty Uglies 959 defeated by Lovely Banks Lilacs 1064

Bit of a lacklustre affair this one, with @Jen ‘s mob getting home by a ton and change. Parish (124) the only real highlight from either side. When I think trends involving ugly things that came with lilac as a colour option, I think back to the Cabbage Patch Kids. Parents spending huge dollars on a doll, they are a serious collectors item now, with some worth well over $2000

Nareewillock Nuffers 1056 defeated by Larrikin lagoon Lefties 1092

It is encouraging to see two of the less fancied sides in the ChiefBet odds both notch scores north of a thousand. The crowd would have been quite rowdy at Nuffer stadium this week as @chris88 almost got his team over the line against @thatkiguy ‘s charges.

Redman (110), Serong (101) and Oooooooooh - Errol (107) were good for the home side, with ex-Spelunker Bowes (108) coming off the Lefties’ emergency list to tell the Commish to get stuffed. He reminds me a bit of a Tamogotchi from the late 90’s… if you ignore him, he shrivels up and dies, but if you feed him, pet him and give him all sorts of encouragement… who knows what he might grow into.

Venus Bay Vultures 1290 defeated Iron Knob Codpieces 913

@Fitzy gave @churchboy a good slap on the arse. A nice even spread of scores (10 over 80) from the Vultures was enough to repel the solo effort of Sinclair (124) in an undermanned Iron Knob side. Venus Bay just starting to warm up, like a lava lamp… looks a bit uneventful at the start, but once it gets going you can’t help but be mesmorised by the colour and movement. Don’t write them off this early in the season

Wagga Wagga Wombats 1141 defeated by the Gundagai Grasshoppers 1314

Not a bad match this with some real highlights in the scores from LDU (155), Oliver (135) and Mills (123) offset by some truly shit performances from Barrass (34) and Rankine (48). @snoz desperately looking for that once in a generation player to fill the void left by Henry leaving, and @Lenny120 left to play with his cubed poo, which he has cobbled together with some wire from an old coat hanger into a makeshift Rubik’s Cube… will he solve the scoring puzzle before season’s end? Hoopers quietly go 2-0… shhhh, he doesn’t want you noticing

Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles 1237 defeated by Gariwerd Cockatoos 1286

Cracking match this, with real ebbs and flows, similar to a crushed velvet topped waterbed from the 80’s. You jump in, and ride the waves for hours, and just hope that you don’t spring a leak. McGovern (116), Titch (122), Dunkley (117) headline 5 tons for the cows, with the interchange turning it on for @anthak, Holmes and Laird with 102 & 147 respectively. Both teams now 1-1 in the middle of the pack.

Whitsunday Warriors 1181 defeated by Foul Bay Chickens 1470

It may be @ChiefRussell ‘s last season at the helm of the chooks, but he sure as hell isn’t taking it easy on the competition. @TerryinBangkok on the receiving end of a pasting. Four tons from the islanders including a 149 from Cameron and a 123 from Dixon in the forward line nowhere near enough to compete against the 8 tons from Foul Bay. The respective mood rings of the coaches told the story after the match, which the Chief’s glowing a lovely pink showing signs of contentment, whilst Terry’s was a bit darker in colour, maybe a sign of some anxiety.

Wineglass Bay Packers 1209 defeated Dunsborough Dung Beetles 973

@Tracey goes to 1-1 with a good win against the Dung Beetles. Nice consistent spread of scores for the Packers with new recruit Baker maybe being one who will be under pressure at the selection table this week. For the poo rollers, the Ruck is a real issue, but hope springs eternal as long as you have Ollie Henry in the side. Both of these teams going through some ups and downs, like a yoyo if you like. I wonder if @CursingFijian had a coca cola or a fanta yoyo back in the day… and was he adept at walking the dog, and rocking the cradle?

Birdsville Battlers 1201 defeated by Cradle Mountain Devils 1564

@dmandrews goes WHACK! And sends a message to the rest of the comp that he is up and about already this season. Real yin and yang scoring from the devils with 9 tons and 5 scores below 80, whereas the Battlers scored a little more consistently. The triple threat in the ruck from Cradle Mountain is a warning sign for other coaches, with Nankervis, English and Marshall totalling 386 points between them. @JC was not disgraced, which seems strange to say given he lost by 363 points, but for context everyone else in the comp bar The Chief was at least 250 points away from the Devils this week. I did all of that math on my fancy Casio Calculator watch… lucky I have small fingers as the buttons are tiny
