Blanchetown is a small township in South Australia, on the (west) bank of the Murray River, 130km northeast of Adelaide. The Blanchetown Bridge is the western-most (and farthest downstream) of the four crossings of the Sturt Highway over the Murray River. During the nineteenth century it was an important transportation centre on the lower Murray. In modern times Blanchetown has been described as 'a strange mixture of historic buildings and temporary shacks built by holidaymakers on the banks of the river'. Blanchetown is widely regarded as the entrance to the Riverland district. Blanchetown was originally surveyed in October 1855 as Blanche Town. It was named after Lady Blanche MacDonnell, the wife of the Governor of South Australia, Sir Richard MacDonnell. The Governor selected the site personally, to replace an earlier settlement of Murrundi (or Moorundee) - five kilometres downstream - which was subject to flooding. Murrundi had been chosen as the base of the Protector of Aborigines by Edward John Eyre since 1841. There had been a ferry crossing at Blanchetown since 1869 (private before 1879, then Government-run). In February 1876 Blanchetown was described as a 'small but ambitious settlement, containing a dozen houses, and having a population of about 50 people'. The buildings in the township were 'substantially built of a stone quarried in the neighbourhood'. The post and telegraph office, the hotel and store were described as 'the main buildings In 1877 the Blanchetown Bunyip Football Club was established by the current serving Mayor of Blanchetown and resident Ruckman. Mayor Neville Garrett (a direct relative of the 2013 ORFFU Head Coach) developed the club from humble beginnings to a powerhouse in the Riverland Region. Premiership winners in 1877 through to 1955 declared the Bunyips as Australia's most successful sporting team of the era and perhaps ever. The 1956 floods devastated the entire Blanchetown area and was the worst flooding the Murray had ever experienced. The 1956 football season was a washout and although the Bunyips continued to train in 3ft of water, there was no Premiership on offer. After losing the last 50 Grand finals in a row a new head coach was appointed on completion of the 2013 Grand Final. Head Coach Marty Garrett was elated to be chosen as Captain/Coach and was quoted saying I am honoured and privileged to be appointed Captain and Coach of the Blanchetown Bunyips. I am excited about the potential of the playing group and can see big things ahead. Whilst we have a long way to go, a Premiership in 2014 is not out of the question”. The Bunyip management group are excited by draft pick number 2 in the upcoming ORFFU league and are keeping quiet on who they will be targeting. [IMG]

So, officially there are no original Bunyips players left.

What we have is a young list with a lot of promise!

    Top players:
    DEF: Hardwick, Houston, Atkins, Dale
MID: Dunstan, Walsh, Keays, J Daicos
    RUC: ROB
    FWD: Cameron, Fritsch, King, Ugle-Hagan
    INT: Durham, Horne-Francis

With 3 number 1 draft picks in the squad, surely things have to turn around sooner or later!
