ORFFA Round 8 (AFL Round 8) - Late withdrawal/Unexpected doughnut Round

Round 8 marks the return of the ORFFA's late/withdrawal/unexpected doughnut round - a timely decision perhaps given the AFL's preference for constant four (or more) day footy weekends and the inherent challenges this can cause in our fair competition.

Doughnuts, of course, should never be unexpected. In fantasy football, doughnuts should be guarded against at all costs through the use of emergencies and other devices.

In real life, doughnuts should be welcomed and should be a source of joy - especially if they are accompanied by a caffeinated beverage of some description.

    Round 8 Cradle Mountain team

    Out: J Hopper (hamstring)
    In: D Wilson

    Def: N Vlastuin, D Heppell, J Lever, J Battle (J Laverde)
    Mid: J Steele, S Pendlebury, E Langdon, D Wilson (R Ginbey)
    Ruc: T English
    Fwd: D Zorko, T Hawkins, A Naughton, J Gresham (R Maric)
    Int: T Nankervis, R Marshall (S Sidebottom)

With four wins from their first five games Cradle Mountain were on top of the ladder after Round 5. After back to back losses in Round 6 & 7 the Devils have slid back to fifth place. Cradle Mountain rank third for points for but on the flipside have conceded the most points in the comp.

So far in the 2024 ORFFA season a team has scored 1,500+ 3 times. Two of these instances have been by teams playing the Devils – Birdsville with 1,504 in Round 1 and Charlies Opening Spelunkers with 1,581 in Round 7. @Bandit’s Spelunkers also scored 1,500+ in Round 4 with 1,529 against the Cows.

In previous seasons it has been common for a team to have an extended run on top of the ORFFA ladder. 2024 has been very different and much like a peloton in cycling the team at the front of the pack is changing frequently. No team has been on top of the ladder for two rounds in a row in 2024. With the ORFFA ladder leaders being Birdsville (after Round1), Nuffers (Round 2), Mount Beauty (Round 3), Spelunkers (Round 4), Devils (Round 5), Hoppers (Round 6) and Spelunkers again (Round 7). Can the Spelunkers break the cycle to become the first team to spend two rounds in a row on top of the ORFFA ladder?

After Round 7 in 2023 the Hoppers had won all seven games, the gap to 12th was four games and the Chickens were second on the ladder with six wins. The Beetles were yet to win a game and three teams had one win each, the Packers, Lilacs and Codpieces.

It has been great for the competitiveness of the ORFFA that each team has already had at least two losses in 2024 and 14 of the 16 teams have already had multiple wins with the exceptions being the Lefties and Codpieces with one win each. It is amazing that after Round 7 this season only two wins separated the Spelunkers in first place on five wins and the Wombats in 12th place on three wins. The Misfits in 13th place with two wins and five loses rank sixth for points for with 8,429 points which highlights how little separates teams this season. It shapes to be an exciting battle for top 4 and top 8 positions over the remaining 10 rounds of the 2024 ORFFA home and away season.

Your analysis is, as always, spot on @dmandrews - well done.

It may bore some people, but I am pretty confident that after the equilisation process the cows' 27 (or was it 28) consecutive wins is unlikely to be in danger anytime soon.

For next year can the FIXture Committee add "Surprise Sub" to the potential list of ills. Guess I am just dirty because Fyfe got an unexpected (to me anyway) re-acquaintance with the pine at the MCG.

Noted and absolutely agreed with, Graeme.

Some of the sub decisions have been somewhat interesting this season.
