Fittingly, it was the Number of the Beast, because that's exactly what the Magpies became. The Shags, meanwhile, looked like they accidentally submitted their bye-round team. Speaking of the Shags, they've managed another remarkable achievement. With their 748 this week, they now proudly own positions #4 through #10 on the all-time lowest scores list. It's an incredible level of consistency. Most clubs chase premiership records; the Shags have instead cornered the market on historically dreadful Sundays. At the top of the ladder, congratulations are due to the Black Swamp 29ers and Drouin Dropbears, who became the first two clubs to officially lock in finals spots. The 29ers had to earn theirs, edging Port Lincoln Power 1321-1287 in a genuine heavyweight clash that could easily have gone either way. The Dropbears, meanwhile, continued their march toward September with a comfortable 1387-1180 victory over the Rutherglen Fugitives. After last week's 1546 explosion, this almost looked restrained. "Only" 1387. Standards have become ridiculous. At the other end of the table, the Nangkita Bucks have officially joined the Heard Island Shags and Jan Juc Ducks as teams that can start planning Mad Monday instead of finals. The Bucks fell 1413-1211 to The Stony Ponys, and with that result their mathematical hopes disappeared. Better luck next season—and maybe avoid checking the ladder for a while. The Neptune Island Noahs kept the Ducks' misery rolling with a 1057-974 victory. The Ducks have at least succeeded in making everyone else's percentage healthier. Useless Loop Virgins produced one of their best performances of the season, smashing the Maralinga Atoms 1342-983. It was less a football match and more a community service announcement on the dangers of poor draft pick selections. The Walpole Woylies edged out Mt Thirsty Boozers 1263-1230 in one of the tighter contests of the round, while the Macquarie Island Whales defeated the Wedge Island White Pointers 1313-1238 to keep themselves firmly in the finals conversation. With only a handful of rounds remaining, the picture is becoming clearer. The 29ers and Dropbears have booked their August tickets, the Bucks have joined the Shags and Ducks on the outside looking in, and the Magpies have reminded the competition that if you give them an inch, they'll take 666 points.
