Review is going up piecemeal this week as I get them knocked up. Been a busy weekend for ol' walesy.
St. Kilda vs Richmond
Result: Richmond by 17
Well the Tigers have done it. They held off the Saints and have the first two wins of the season. A feat they haven't accomplished since 1997. Was it particularly convincing against a, and I hate to say it, lower rated Saints outfit? Not really, but they got ahead early, and managed to hold onto the lead, despite a massive challenge by the Saints towards the end of the third quarter.
It was a good win for them but I'm still going to hold off until their round 4 challenge against the Pies before backing the Tiger army.
Leading the charge for the Tigers was Jack Riewoldt who had just 10 kicks, kicking 7.2 from it for a 138SC. It's a far cry from his team-game that was lauded last weekend, but really shows the diversity that Richmond have in playing him as he was just as potent in both roles.
Their captain, Trent Cotchin, was very good picking up 31 disposals and despite a 55% efficiency rate, managed a 119SC. He was actually pretty quiet through the first half, picking up just 42SC points, but a big second half saw him manage 32SC and 45SC in the final two terms. Really was their when the game was on the line.
Speaking of game on the line though, Brett Deledio managed 52SC points from his final term, resulting in a 114SC off 27 touches.
Really a case of Richmonds big names pulling the team over the line in that final term.
Dustin MARTIN scored 92SC for the game, but was shut right down after the first quarter, in which he scored about half his total points. There's gunna be some scary high games from this kid, and I'll we looking to get him into my squad sooner rather than later.
Over in the Saints corner, it was Ben McEvoy who really put my pre-season Maric > McEvoy call to shame. He was a monster in the ruck. Would love to know his hitouts to advantage this week, he was fantastic. Picked up 19 disposals and 26 hitouts for a 130SC.
Clinton Jones tried hard all day with 24 touches and 116SC while Nick Riewoldt tried to keep up with his cousin, picking up 20 touches, 4 goals and 111SC.
A couple of villains in the Saints this week, with Jarryn Geary and Arryn SIPOSS both being popular trade-in targets after scoring very well in the first round. Well, the former managed just 48SC and was barely sighted in the second half, while the latter was subbed in the 3rd, for just 33SC. Definitely a rough night for the coaches who took a risk on them.
Heroes: Jack Riewoldt, Ben McEvoy
Villains: Alex Rance, Arryn SIPOSS, Jarryn Geary
Sydney vs Gold Coast
Result: Sydney by 41
Sydney continue to roll into their 2013 campaign with another soft fixture, running out a solid effort by 41 points. Now, don't get me wrong, the Suns were competitive, but there is still a world of difference between the third year club and the reigning premiers. Really, as you'd expect.
Jarrad McVeigh led the way for the Swans, with 27 disposals at a 70% efficiency rate, along with 4 majors set him up for a game high 144SC. Luke PARKER is looking like a ripper of a mid-priced pick, he collected 25 disposals kicked 2 goals and finished with 133SC. It will be interesting to see how he continues that one against greater opposition in the next few weeks, but regardless, should find himself recieving a tasty cash infusion over the next couple.
Kieren Jack was a bit of a machine for the Swannies, not only did he keep the great Gary held to a sub-100 score, but also managed 28 touches of his own, at a damaging 82% efficiency rate for a 130SC. A fantastic game for the lad who has all the tools to break out into a premium mid this season.
Turned out to be seven Swans who cracked the ton this week, but one Swan who didn't was Adam Goodes who managed just 12 touches for a 49SC. Now, it was just his first game for the year, so that score will only effect a single price movement, but if he does take a few more weeks to find form, could find himself at a bargain basement price during the upgrade period.
Charlie DIXON found himself sharing the ruckwork with Smith this week, and boy, if he keeps up the role, could find himself in a very good place fantasy-wise. 18 disposals, 21 hitouts and 3 goals for the lad saw him put on 123SC.
Two suns managed to score 120SC this week. David SWALLOW had 21 touches for his, while everyones new favourite rookie Jaeger O'Meara took 25. Just quietly, if you don't have Jaeger in your squad just yet, move heaven and earth to bring in him. This score wasn't a fluke.
It feels a little rough giving a villains tag to someone who scored 99SC, but for the great Gary Ablett we were expecting a lot more. Jack and Smith both did great jobs on the fella, keeping him restricted to just a mere mortal 24 touches and a behind.
The other villain from the Suns this week was Zachary SMITH. Once a darling, might be finding himself losing his fantasy relevance this year. Certainly doesn't look to be taking the step we would have hoped for, and with Dixon around, it just might not be his year. I'd be pulling the plug and moving him on if you took a gamble on him.
Heroes: Jarrad McVeigh, Luke PARKER, Kieren Jack, Charlie DIXON, Jaeger O'Meara
Villains: Adam Goodes, Gary Ablett, Zachary SMITH, Jared Brennan
Westen vs Fremantle
Result: Fremantle by 28
It had all the hall marks of a blow out in the first quarter with Fremantle kicking the first five goals straight, before the Dogs managed a few before the end of the quarter. The Doggies show some spark in the 2nd quarter, pulling a few back, but 3 quick goals from Fremantle to open the 3rd term and it was pretty much done and dusted for the Dockers.
Despite losing the game, the highest scorers came from the Doggies, with Will Minson leading the charge. 16 disposals, a massive 48 hitouts and 143SC in a massive rucking performance.
Tom LIBERATORE picked up 28 touches, 18 of those contested, along with a swag of tackles and clearances for a 133SC while Adam Cooney managed a game high 31 disposals for 124SC.
Brett Goodes is certainly one of the best rookies available at the moment, his 98SC a beautiful return from 21 touches which also makes him another one of those must-have rookies in your list.
Anyone who took a chance on #GiansiracusaD|WBD after his performance last week will be saddened by his 11 touches and just 33SC, while rookie Koby STEVENS only managed 30SC for his coaches after recieving the green vest for the game.
Nathan FYFE top scored for the Dockers in what was a suprisingly low scoring affair for them, his 127SC off 25 touches being the only real standout performance for the list- though the 102SC from Jonathon Griffin will certainly be appreciated by his coaches.
Heroes: Will Minson, Tom LIBERATORE, Brett Goodes, Nathan FYFE, Hayden Crozier
Villains: Daniel Giansiracusa
Brisbane vs Adelaide
Result: Adelaide by 19
I'm gunna skip over discussing the game here and jump straight into Pearce Hanley. What a performance with 30 disposals, 14 of those contested and a massive 160SC. While coaches the stacked their backlines with rookies are smiling, those with Hanley should be stoked with his opening to the season.
Tom Rockliff did his job with a 109SC, while Matthew Leuenberger picked up a ton in his first game back. Definitely someone you would be looking to trade in- though you've got another week to do it before price changes. Don't forget, if you've got Cox in the ruck, you can move him forward in the same trade.
And speaking of moving Cox forward and trading out an underperforming forward mid-pricer for Leuenberger, it brings me to Patrick KARNEZIS. It's a little rough considering he copped a green vest and was brought on in the 4th, but a single kick and two tackles for an 8SC is a massive ouch to the coaches that couldn't get him off the field in time.
I heard someone say the other week that the fantasy career of Scott Thompson is at an end. I dunno, with 31 disposals and 140SC he's looking like he's bounced back from his performance last week in the best possible way!
Patrick Dangerfield picked up 23 touches, including 2 very important goals in the final term for a 107SC. Would hate to know what he would have scored if he'd missed those though! Needs to step up fanstasy wise.
On the rookie front, there's a couple of beauties from the Crows. Luke Brown was brilliant after being subbed of injured last week. A full game, 19 touches and 97SC adds him to the arm long list of rookie defenders that will sky-rocket in price this week. Brad Crouch on the other hand, will give us another week before his inevitable jump in price, with 18 disposals and 85SC.
Matthew WRIGHT being primarily Adelaides best tagger, spent the day on Rich, but wasn't able to punish the other way quite as well as last week, with just 17 disposals and 61SC.
Heroes: Pearce Hanley, Matthew Leuenberger, Brent Moloney, Scott Thompson, Luke Brown, Brad Crouch
Villains: Patrick KARNEZIS, Matthew WRIGHT
Essendon vs Melbourne
Result: Essendon by 145
I don't know if I can say anything about this game that hasn't already been said. Melbourne were destroyed and the Bombers were unrelentingly brutal.
As a result, if you have any Melbourne players outside of rookies Dean Terlich, Matt Jones and Jack Viney I'd be thinking long and hard about moving them on before the price drops!
On the Bombers side, as you'd expect, it was a different kettel of fish. Eight tons, including a 103 from David Zaharakis who was subbed off.
Jobe Watson will be looking at another 3 votes this week with a massive 28 touches, 3 goals and 166SC. Defender, Dyson HEPPELL was fantastic. His first half saw him pick up 22 disposals, finishing the game with 36 touches and 149SC.
Tom Bellchambers was a bit of a machine in the forwardline, with 12 touches and 4 goals he provided an imposing target up there, while Ben HOWLETT continues his great start to the year with 25 touches and 127SC.
Considering all the massive scores, you gotta feel for the owners of Nicholas Kommer who started the game in the green vest and managed just 9 touches for 21SC.
Heroes: Jobe Watson, Dyson HEPPELL, Tom Bellchambers, Ben HOWLETT
Villains: Melbourne
Port vs GWS
Result: Port by 56
In was tribute to J-Mac and the Port boys didn't fail to deliver. They were down in the first quarter, as the Giants came with both barrels firing, but never looked troubled after that, winning the next three quarters comfortable.
Justin Westhoff went large, with 25 disposals and 5 goals to his name he collected a massive 163SC. Closely followed by Chad Wingard who had 22 touches and kicked 3.2 for a 145SC. Port have really found something in both Wingard and Wines which will see them in good stead in the upcoming years.
Kane Cornes and Travis Boak both managed 123SC while new recruit Angus Monfries is fitting in like a glove at his new club with a 102SC and looking a great pick for the coaches who have him, averaging over 100 so far this season.
Then we move to the vast multitude of rookies that Port is presenting this season. Lewis Stevenson led the way with a 93SC off 22 touches, with Jasper Pittard (91SC), Jake Neade (86SC) and Campbell Heath (85SC) hot on his heels as standout rookie performers.
Oliver Wines wasn't a prominant as last week, just 51SC off 19 touches, but that happens with the kids, meanwhile Kane Mitchell was once again the sub, and picked up 5 touches and 15SC in his quarter of play. Can't wait to see that kid get a full game though.
Hamish Hartlett looked a little concerning, barely touching the ball after hurting his back, he managed just 10 touches and 38SC. A far cry from the 120 he put on last week!
On the Giants side, only one player cracked the ton. Rookie Lachie Whitfield put in a great performance. Well, at least half a performance, leading the game with 15 touches at half time and finishing at 20 for a 100SC.
The other relevant rookie at the GWS was Lachlan Plowman who managed just 6 touches and 30SC. Considering the vast amount of backline rookies who are performing at the moment, it might pay this week to move him across to one of those.
Heroes: Justin Westhoff, Angus Monfries, Lewis Stevenson, Jasper Pittard, Jake Neade, Campbell Heath, Lachie Whitfield
Villains: Hamish Hartlett
So, how have you gone this week? How did you find the mailout stuff? Was a fair few subs this week that effected us, so it, and the rolling lockouts were pretty cool I thought.
