It's been another big week in fantasy sports, with some massive games, some disappointments and a bit of fools gold that is turning out to look a lot shinier than we would have thought.
Fremantle vs Essendon
Result: Essendon by 4.
It was an epic win for the Bombers. A horror week off the field, quickly turned into a horror on the field. I was a wet night, and for the longest time, it seemed that the Bombers couldn't find touch with the ball- with it slipping out of their hands on numerous occations.
It wasn't just with hands that teams were struggling, nor just the Bombers, with Hurley, Ballantyne and Pavlich all putting forward some of the worst shanks at a set shot I've ever seen. Ballantynes literally went sideways. If you haven't seen it, surely it's on YouTube somewhere.
74% of the first quarter was played in the Dockers half, and the second quarter it wasn't much better with the Dockers going into the main break six goals up 7.5 to 1.5
I dunno if there was powder applied to hands, or if things just dried out a little, but when the second half rolled around, it looked a different Bombers outfit. They were direct, their disposal was clean and they dominated. They kicked 5.5 to just 2 behinds, then carried that through to the 4th quarter to hit the lead.
Fremantle struck back with their first goal in 51 minutes, but it was the Bombers who took the lead in the dying minutes due to a Paddy Ryder snap. Chris Mayne had the chance to put his boys back in front, but only managed a posted from his left-foot snap, 15 meters out.
Due to those heroics, Patrick Ryder scored a massive 145SC from just 13 disposals and 25 hitouts. A welcome relief for his coaches, but still concerning.
Jake CARLISLE was fantastic all evening. Kept Pavlich to a minimal impact, yet managed 18 touches of his own and 135SC. In the dying minutes, he spoiled a mark, then won the contested ball against 3 Dockers before cleaning it. It was a sight to behold and I'm sure inflated his score a bit.
Brent Stanton I wanted to single out for his performance. He picked up 22 touches and 99SC, however, impressively, he did this under the hard tag of Creepy Crowley. He worked hard both ways, punished his opposition and kept at it, despite the tag, which is something he has struggled with in the past. Might be a big year for Stants.
Nicholas Kommer put in a blinder to burst his bubble and his coaches will be well rewarded with a sizable price rise from his 92SC. There was an incident though with Kepler, which will see him fronting the tribunal, but I like his chances of getting off more than Paddy's.
Looking at the scores, you'd have expected Crowley was the one who tagged Jobe Watson, keeping him to just 20 touches and 67SC, but it was De Boer, meaning Jobe could be in for a bit of a salary drop over the next 3 weeks. Keep watch.
I think it's funny sometimes when you look back at past trades. In 2009, in the decarcle of a trade that brought Mark Williams to Essendon, they gave up pick 16 which could have gotten Fyfe, and in return got pick 24, Jake Carlisle. Not as horrible now as it looked even a month ago.
Still, Nathan FYFE was fantastic. Picked himself up 27 disposals, 2 goals and 129SC. Michael Walters continues to play above his salary, this week picking up 15 touches, 2.3 and 111, while Michael Johnson picked up his first ton for the year with a 107SC off 18 touches.
One player from the Dockers who has been out of form this year, is Matthew Pavlich who only managed a 59SC this week and will plummet in price. Should be coming into everyone's team once he finds some form though.
Heroes: Patrick Ryder, Jake CARLISLE, Nicholas Kommer, Nathan FYFE
Villains: Jobe Watson, Matthew Pavlich
Melbourne vs West Coast
Result: West Coast by 94.
I imagine that Melbourne will be involved in a lot of my reviews this year, but not for any reason they'd want to be. Why? Because they get absolutely smashed and players knock out giant scores against them. As a quick note for the future, if you're playing the captains loophole, set your VC against the Dees.
This week it was Cox|D|WCE who smashed it out of the park. 24 disposals, kicked 3.2 and had 23 hitouts for a massive 171SC. Bring on that loophole!
In fact, there were 8 tons put up by Eagles this week including Jack DARLING (141), Chris Masten (141), Josh J. Kennedy (136), Matt Priddis (122), Scott Selwood (121), Ashton HAMS (110) and Josh Hill (105).
Truely a massive effort with all the big guns firing and even DPP rookie Callum Sinclair scoring an 81SC to bring him onto the bubble.
Melbourne howeve,r was another kettle of fish, with Jack TRENGOVE the only person to crack the mark with 101. In fact, there wasn't too much to write about here, Jack Viney did nicely with 71, while first round draft pick Jimmy Toumpas came on as the sub with a disappointing 6SC.
Heroes: Dean Cox, Darling|J|WCE, Chris Masten, Josh J. Kennedy, Scott Selwood
Villains: Jimmy Toumpas
Collingwood vs Hawthorn
Result: Hawthorn by 55.
I don't say this often, but, the THROWS! Collingwood look good in the first half of this match, were doing all the right things, just unable to get the scoreboard pressure. That is, til the seconnd quarter when the finally managed to string 3 together. I honestly thought they would carry that through, but the Hawks, put on the next 5 goals, heading to the main break just a point down.
From there, it was a swinging 1-1 affair, til the end of the quarter when the Hawks put on 4 unanswered goals. From there it was a nightmare for the Pies, who looked as flat as a tack while the Hawks put on 7 goals to 2.
Luke Hodge looked very good. If you told me, based on this form, that he'd missed the pre-season I would believe you. 31 touches and 2.1 for a 122SC was top notch, while Lance Franklin put in a big game with 121SC for 21 touches and 4.1
On Collingwoods side, there were a couple of big scores with Travis Cloke picking up 133SC off his 5.3 while Scott Pendlebury managed a 124 off 29 disposals.
But it's the bad games that I wanted to talk about here. Dane Swan, while he managed 33 disposals scored just 91SC, which will help get him in.
Heath Shaw got tagged by Lewis when in the backline, and was tried in a forward role himself on Hodge, but just couldn't get off the mark, picking up 13 disposals and 51SC.
Steele Sidebottom had an absolute shocker though. No real reason, just was never where the ball was from what I could see. Picked up 14 touches and 39SC which will see him drop well in price over the next few weeks.
Heroes: Luke Hodge, Travis Cloke, Scott Pendlebury
Villains: Steele Sidebottom, Heath Shaw
Port vs Adelaide
Result: Port by 9
They are now 3-0, and considering how fantasy-relevant they are this year, are playing some excellent footy this year. It's a good time to be a Port support.
Justin Westhoff proved that his last week heroics weren't a fluke, top scoring again with 24 disposals, 4.4 and 150SC. If you took the punt on him for the easy cash, well played. Pat yourself on the back.
Travis Boak was everywhere, picking up 30 disposals and showing up for 3 goals of his own for 134SC.
It's the form of young guns Chad Wingard and Oliver Wines that would have most Port fans smiling. Both managed 25 disposals, they kicked 5 goals between them with the former on 123SC and the latter 121SC. How Wines slipped through to Ports pick though, I'll never know. I rated him very highly and was the first picked rookie on my team this year. *Cough*SecondbehindJaeger*cough*
Angus Monfries is fitting in beautifully in his new environment, with 22 touches and 2 goals for a 120SC, while Hamish Hartlett bounced back from last week with a 28 touch, 118SC game.
Campbell Heath put in a good one, with 77SC off 12 touches, but his two counterparts couldn't keep up their recent golden form with Lewis Stevenson managing 49SC and Jasper Pittard just 41SC.
Jake Neade once again impressed with just 9 touches, but 8 tackles and 76SC while Kane Mitchell was once again the sub. Luckily this week, he came on a little earlier- running out nearly half a game and picking up 35SC off 12 touches. Will probably move him this week for Crouch, but boy, when he starts getting full games he's gunna score.
Speaking of Brad Crouch he heads to his bubble with a 50SC, from 18 disposals and looks good value to bring into your squad this week.
Adelaide I must say, have been disappointing this year. Scott Thompson managed to scrape in a 103, but Patrick Dangerfield is absolutely doing his coaches heads in. managed 20 touches this week, but through poor disposal made just 84SC. We know what he can do, he dominated last year, but so far this year, just hasn't found touch.
And let me just say, I'm pretty sure the is a special spot kept warm in Supercoach hell for rookies who do well in the first two weeks, suck you into trading them in, then spud it up for you. Luke Brown welcome to this circle. Your 6 touches while doing a role on Wingard and your 12SC has put you on the list.
Heroes: Justin Westhoff, Travis Boak, Chad Wingard, Oliver Wines
Villains: Luke Brown
And that will do us this week.
How did you go this week? Did you dodge the bullets? There was a lot of them. Let us know in the comments!
