Before the season started, we got the hot tip that a number of factors in the Supercoach formula were changing- I detailed a few of them <a href="http://tooserious.net/changes-to-the-supercoach-formula">here[/url].

Anyway, Im sure most of you read it- then forget it, but not Manikato1. Not only does he remember it, hes also knocked up a quick article analysing some of the results from it- namely, the clangers.

Just before the season started an article appeared on TS that advised of changes to the way Champion Data would calculate SuperCoach scores in 2011. There were a number of changes but none as important perhaps as the changes to the â€œclangerâ€ rule. 

Last year the scoring for clangers was -8 for a clanger by foot and â€“ 6 for a clanger by

hand but the new rule makes the score -4 for all clangers. For the clanger kings this means a whopping potential turn around in PPG, with 4 points per foot clanger and 2 points per hand clanger improvement on offer. So has the change made a difference so far this year?

Below is the list published earlier this year which consists of 21 names with their average clangers per game from 2010. Five of the 21 need to be taken out of calculations leaving 16. Barlow, Schammer, McLean and Fev are non starters this season while Cassisi got injured in his second game and that is not enough games to make him a starter.

So what about the remaining 16? The list makes no distinction between foot and hand clangers so to make calculations easier an arbitrary decision has been made. Anyone with 3.5 clangers or above is allocated three foot clangers and one hand clanger while those below this get allocated two foot clangers and one hand clanger. 

On the right and based on the arbitrary allocation of clangers is the change in SuperCoach points per game this season compared to their average last season. So in 2010 Franklin averaged 107 points per game but is at 114 this season at the time of writing meaning an increase of 7 points per game. Of course it is a long season and scores can change but that is life. 

So 11 of the 16 are up on last seasonâ€™s average. Six of the top eight clanger kings

from last season are up with Sylvia, Brennan and Boyd being the biggest improvers. Yes we have few duds. Lovett-Murray is the biggest with 22 point decrease. Donâ€™t know enough about Essendon (Walesy need your help here!)to know if he is playing badly or Hird has a different role for him this year that could explain the drop. Boak has a three point drop and I think he has been a bit disappointing but he is also playing in a team that has been getting hammered every week. 

In the bottom half of the table the big winners were Moloney and Brogan with plus 27 and

plus 23 increases respectively. The big disappointment in this group is Hodge but he is still suffering injury issues and has made a slow start to the season. 

The other changes made by Champion Data could also be contributing to an average PPG increase in SuperCoach this season but it is interesting to see so many names on the list that would have not been considered seriously pre season now doing so well. How many of you out there would have considered the big improvers this year to be Brennan (+14) or Moloney (+27) or Brogan (+23)????
