Unconfirmed, but heard from very reliable source that a Port power player has died while on end season trip. I'm reluctant to put player name up until we find out more. Very sad day by the looks.

Yep, terrible news. Has been confirmed on the AFL website. Identity of player still unknown.

Link to report on Power site http://www.portadelaidefc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/6038/newsid/147307/default.aspx

No player named as yet but the Twitterverse is awash with reports that it is a player who played their first season at Port from a Vic club

Given the huge amount already going around on other media I think we can safely reveal here that the player being rumoured is John McCarthy. Fell from balcony I'm told, but again, unconfirmed.

I have tears falling down my face as I type this.

JMAC was one of the nicest people you could meet. I was only talking to him the other week at the footy club and he said he was looking forward to getting away for a holiday with the lads.

The other Port players who were with him in Vegas would be going through hell at the moment.

Condolences to his family and his girlfriend.

A very sad day for everyone at Port Adelaide.

Have been the same Steve, although I never had the benefit of meeting him some conversations I have had with him on Twitter gave me the same indication of how nice a bloke he was (I had even promised to buy him a beer next time I went to the club after he kicked the opening goal in round 1 which won me a packet - never had the opportunity to follow through).

Absolutely gut-wrenching time for his family, team-mates, the club, and supporters.

Wow - was just watching him play a couple of weeks back in the last round at the MCG. Very sad news.
