Welcome once again to another week of TooSerious Best Buys.
This week it's still a little different to normal, with all the scores still fluctuating wildly, but even more so due to a couple of extra details.
For starters, there are no rookies. Why you may ask? Simple really, because P_L has already covered all the rookie options going around the traps, and in more depth I might add, so there's no point in doubling up and repeating what you've already read.
The other main difference is the sheer number of players still averaging well above the norm, which means for this week we've again focused on the players averaging over 100, and in most cases over 110. This means there are still many players who could be considered a bit stiff to not make the cut, but as the season rolls on the numbers should sort themselves out and the true value players will emerge.
Again there is no Best Buy, as the only real reason teams should be trading this early on is for 'correction trades', but the last thing you all need is lecturing on how to run your SuperCoach sides. (Editors note, personally I made 2 trades last week and will make another 2 this week, it really is each to their own).
DEFENSE
MID-PRICERS
David Swallow (GCS) D/M 429.4k 131
Swallow carried his excellent form from the opening round into the game against Fremantle, and while the Suns couldn't replicate the win Swallow certainly came away with the SC points. Averaging 131 from the first 2 games and facing a 60 grand price rise, Swallow looks like the pick off the backs so far and is already in around 63,000 sides.
Shaun Burgoyne (HAW) D/M 459.6k 113
Burgoyne surprised a few with his 130 on the weekend, but it was in the absence of Mitchell and with Hodge also injured so he may not keep it going for long. Averaging 113 and looking at around a 33 grand price rise this week if he can stay north of 110 he'll be a great POD for his 7,000 odd coaches.
Cale Hooker (ESS) DEF 417.5k 116
Hooker backed up his score from round 1, bringing up the likelihood of a 40 grand price rise and his average to 116 along the way. In under 2,000 teams so far he's offering great value for the risk-seeking POD hunters out there, but like other here today he may struggle to maintain.
Sean Dempster (StK) DEF 385k 114
Similar to Hooker, Dempster has taken many by surprise and started the year on fire. Averaging 114 from 2 rounds and looking at a price rise of around 50 grand, Dempster has well outperformed his price tag but it needs to be remembered that it was against Melbourne and GWS. Only around 3,000 selections.
Matthew Jaensch (ADE) DEF 298.1k 109
Jaensch is looking like a bargain mid-pricer so far, starting the year under 300 grand and if he can score around 110 again this week he'll be over 360 grand by Monday. With around 5,000 coaches backing him in so far he has a lot of POD value, but with his price and scoring history he'd have to be seen as a stop-gap player only.
PREMIUMS
Robert Murphy (WBD) DEF 534.3k 112
Bob Murphy continues to show his class, averaging 112 in the first 2 games and performing consistently well in a sometimes troubled Dogs outfit. In less than 3,000 teams so far this season he certainly isn't a popular pick, but he has been a good player for some time now and has a lot more durability than some others.
MIDFIELD
MID-PRICERS
Oliver Wines (PTA) MID 399.1k 126
Wines is working hard on dispelling the myth of the second year blues”, averaging 126 for the year so far and not missing a beat. With a 60 grand price rise on the way and under 15,000 picks so far, you could certainly do worse than take the punt on the sub-400k Quadzilla.
Clinton Jones (StK) MID 438.6k 125
Jones has made the Best Buys again this week, but that's really only because of his 125 average from the first 2 games. With a score of 98 in the last game he still offers a unique pick for his 1,000 or so coaches, but is very unlikely to keep his average up over 100.
Dayne Beams (COL) MID 497.2k 125
Beams is already in 108,000 teams, so if you don't have him so far then you might want to bring him in before the price rises. Under 500 grand is cheap as chips for a premium midfielder who can average 125 consistently, and with Swan not performing to his peak so far there's plenty of SC Pie for Beams at Collingwood.
Callan Ward (GWS) MID 525k 123
Ward has started the season strongly, averaging 123 and amazingly sitting in only around 1,500 sides. That's less than half the selections of Treloar to put it in context. An excellent POD pick, many coaches will be wary of the inevitable GWS form slump and will probably ignore Ward completely.
Dion Prestia (GCS) MID 525.9k 123
Prestia was down a bit from his round 1 blinder, but still managed a respectable 103 in his side's somewhat disappointing loss to Fremantle. Thanks to said blinder his average for 2014 is still a healthy 123, and sitting in only around 1,000 teams so far he's a unique pick for those taking the risk.
Marc Murphy (CAR) MID 498.3k 121
SMurph appears to have put his tagger-issues behind him so far this year, averaging 121 and playing quite well in a poor Blues outfit. Very similar to Beams in a lot of ways this season, he only has a bit over 30,000 picks and offers a great alternative.
Matt Thomas (RIC) MID 250.3k 119
Matt Thomas has to be one of the surprise packets so far this season, costing only 250 grand and averaging just shy of 120. With under 10,000 picks and a 90 grand price rise coming this week, if he can keep scoring at the same level anyway, he could be a massive boost for the risk-taking coaches looking at bringing him in.
PREMIUMS
Scott Pendlebury (COL) MID 683.1k 154
Pendles showed on the weekend why he is the second most expensive player in SC this year, racking up a massive 182 and giving a huge boost to those that had him as captain. This brings his average up to 154 from the first 2 games, but after missing training during the week he may have some doubts around him. Already in just under 90,000 squads Pendles is a popular gun pick, and his numbers show why.
Joel Selwood (GEE) MID 638.7k 148
Ducky started the year with a bang, even after a diminished pre-season. Averaging 148 from 2 and starting in only around 27,000 sides, Ducky has solid POD credentials and is usually a consistent scorer when uninjured.
Jobe Watson (ESS) MID 601.3k 135
Jobe is attempting to put the ASADA nonsense behind him and the Bombers this year, and with an average of 135 so far he's well on the way to doing so. In around 40,000 teams early on, as the upgrades start occurring you can be sure he'll find his way into a whole swag more sides.
Steve Johnson (GEE) MID 625k 130
Stevie J has rewarded the less than 11,000 coaches to start the year with him, averaging 130 after a big 145 on the weekend. Priced highly and now a midfield only player he has seen much less selections this season, and could make for a tasty POD if his numbers can continue.
RUCK
MID-PRICERS
Shane Mumford (GWS) RUC 496k 145
Mummy has kept on with his new-found Giant form, averaging 145 and facing a 60 grand price rise if he maintains the rage. With only 16,000 selections so far and an improving midfield to feed the ball to, he fits all the criteria for a POD, or will until he gets injured or suspended anyway.
Aaron Sandilands (FRE) RUC 310.7k 139
Sandi is already in over 150,000 sides, and with good reason. Priced at just over 300 grand and averaging 139, he could go up in price to over 400 grand this week alone. A risky proposition, but with the selection numbers he has it might be riskier going without at this stage.
Tom Hickey (StK) RUC 313.3k 112
Hickey has impressed early, especially in the last outing where he racked up a very nice 127. Only just more expensive then Sandi and looking at a 60 grand price rise himself, Hickey's sub 20,000 coaches will be hoping he can repay the faith.
Shaun Hampson (RIC) RUC 334.1k 107
Hammer kept his round 1 form going on the weekend, putting his average at 107 and making him an excellent ruck POD until Maric makes his return at the least. Never an especially dominant ruckman previously, the opportunity and support he's getting at the Tigers has already seemed to work wonders for the big man. In around 11,000 sides to date.
FORWARD
MID-PRICERS
Dayne Zorko (BRL) M/F 447.2k 141
The man on everyone's radars after a 161 on the weekend, albeit in Rocky's absence, Zorko has started the season on fire. Now boasting an average of 141 and priced at under 450 grand, Zorko looks like excellent value for his roughly 29,000 coaches and will be looking to bounce back this season from 2013's 2nd year blues.
Paul Chapman (ESS) M/F 464.4k 119
Chappy has impressed in his new colours, averaging 119 and looking more like the Chappy of old in his first 2 games for Essendon. With around 20,000 picks so far and priced nicely for his average, the only concerns are the old ones regarding hamstrings and the dreaded General.
Luke Breust (HAW) FWD 444.7k 113
Breust has made the cut again this week, albeit after a comparatively subdued 87 in his last outing. With the Hawks missing some key playmakers however, it remains to be seen which of his opening scores will be the better indicator of his output this season. With around 6,000 picks and playing for the defending premiers, his average of 113 shows the potential value he can offer if things fall his way.
Mark LeCras (WCE) FWD 451.3k 112
Lecca is similar to Breust, in that he started the year with a bang but was noticeably quieter in his second outing. Averaging 112 so far, with his 80 on the weekend having a significant impact, Lecca has made a decent POD pick choice for his 13,000 odd coaches to date.
PREMIUMS
Nick Riewoldt (StK) FWD 567.1k 142
The premium forwards consist entirely of the Seniors Brigade this week, with NRoo and his 142 average leading the charge. Demanding top dollar in the forward line hasn't deterred his 13,000 coaches, and many others will be eying Roo off with envy as they wait for his price to drop before bringing him in. The Saints may have only played Melbourne and GWS so far, but these scores still can't be ignored for long.
Brent Harvey (NM) M/F 561.3k 121
Boomer is the other evergreen forward option this week, pumping out a 169 in the Roos' win over the Dogs in a dominant display. Every year we write him off, and every year he proves us wrong. Averaging 121 after his big game on the weekend, and commanding a hefty 560+ grand for his services, it's easy to see why he has only managed 8,000 selections so far but it is just as easy to see why his coaches are thinking they've made the right call with Boomer.
