Once again the Best Buys is here for your SuperCoach trading needs, and after the success of the Faz last week we're going a little more left-field with some of the selections.
Pumping out a 130+, and almost making up for the earlier Mumford selection, Fasolo did us proud and hopefully bought in a boatload of cash for many of you.
This week, we're going with none other than Nathan Jones. The Demons co-captain has really stood up this season, benefiting from increased support from his teammates, new and old, and showing why he is such a fan favourite in Demonland. 3 scores so far over 130, albeit with a tendency to struggle from time to time when tagged, Jones is excellently priced and in great form early on as well as being a certain POD. Playing Sydney this weekend will likely see Jones in another run-with role, and luckily that's where he scores the majority of his points. Many coaches will overlook Jones simply for the colour of his guernsey, but if we've learnt anything in the last few years of SC it's that champions of the game seldom need to be in a winning side to score well.
DEFENSE
ROOKIES
Tom Cutler (BRI) DEF 117.3k 54 +40k
Cutler was a popular pre-season pick this year, before having a set-back or two and starting the season in the reserves. This brings him onto the bubble in time for round 6 and the possibility of some downgrade/upgrade action. Averaging 54 from his first 2 matches and looking at a 40 grand price rise, Cutler could well make his way back into a fair chunk of sides this week.
Jason Ashby (ESS) DEF 152.8k 47 +24k
Ashby has gone under the radar a fair bit, not getting much attention from anywhere really but still managing a 47 average over his first 3 games. He's had his first price rise now, but one only amounting to around 30k, so he remains in contention for a few sides looking for a defensive slow burner.
MID-PRICERS
Matthew Jaensch (ADE) DEF 448.6k 109
Once again the defensive mid-pricers have a couple of surprising names leading the way, with Jaensch firmly in front and starting to gather selection momentum. Now in around 34,000 teams and with a very nice average of 109 his POD value is starting to diminish but his points return doesn't appear to be slowing down just yet. Still priced at under 450 grand Jaensch has offered solid value all season to date.
Cale Hooker (ESS) DEF 469.4k 106
Hooker is the other defender that just keeps on surprising, averaging 106 and seemingly taking the points many had Hibberd pencilled in for this year. With around 5,000 selections so far and a price rise of about 20 grand coming this week, not many coaches have backed him in to keep performing but he appears pretty happy to keep proving the doubters wrong for now.
PREMIUMS
Jimmy Bartel (GEE) D/M 540.6k 105
Jimmy will likely be a regular in the Best Buys pretty soon, having the occasional quiet game, as is his habit, but generally pulling out the big numbers when it really matters. Averaging 105 for the year to date and sitting in a touch over 60,000 sides Abrtel is one of the more popular picks and sits comfortably among the likes of SMitch and Swallow as leaders on the field.

MIDFIELD
ROOKIES
Sam Gray (PTA) MID 102.4k 69 +64k
Sam Gray had a massive start to his AFL career, before copping the vest in his second game and dropping his average considerably. Now sitting on 69 and looking at a 65 grand price rise, he still looks to have great potential but his job ecurity has taken a bit of a hit. Priced at just over 100 grand and looking a solid SC pick Gray might well be a key part in many coaches trading strategies this week.
Nick Robertson (BRI) MID 117.3k 61 +49k
Robertson is another player to get a bit of attention pre-season before missing the opening games and coming in later on for some downgrade action. Averaging 61 from his first 2 games and looking at a 50 grand price rise after his next one I'd personally expect him to be overlooked by the majority as coaches scramble to get their cash generation right for the byes.
Matt Crouch (ADE) MID 186.6k 76 +64k
Matt Crouch isn't on the bubble, but after a 105 on the weekend he's back in contention for a few squads this week. An early vesting means his price hasn't risen as dramatically as some others, he's still priced at around 185 grand, and if he can stay in the side should continue to rack up both the points and the cash in coming games.
MID-PRICERS
Nathan Jones (MEL) MID 502.2k 113
The blue-collar Demons co-captain has been showing some good signs for a few years now, racking up contested possessions and clearances and providing a lot of the in-and-under grunt work for the Dees and showing real spirit on the pitch in the process. The inclusions of a host of midfielders over the off-season had a few worried about his role this year, but Jonesy has proved them wrong and started the season in excellent form. With one score of 65, against GWS, one score in the 90's and three over 130 for the year to date Jones has showed enough to be this week's Best Buy, but may struggle when teams take Melbourne seriously and don't just let him run around as he pleases.
Oliver Wines (PTA) MID 480.8k 111
Wines continues to impress this season, with no signs yet of second year blues, insert vintage/SA wineries joke here. Shaping up as one of the steals of his draft class Quadzilla has shown no signs of slowing down from his 111 average and his expanding pool of 27,000 odd coaches shows a fair few think it can continue for some time yet. Still priced at about 480 grand and offering value in spades, Wines will have to be in consideration for most sides by now.
Daniel Jackson (RIC) MID 512.4k 111
Dan Jackson has also been a bit of a surprise this season, since making his way back into the Richmond squad he has put up some good numbers and is sitting on an average of 111 so far. Priced at a little over 510 grand he offers solid value, and with less than 1,000 selections to date is a certain POD. Jackson's scoring consistency may well be questioned, and with Lids still on the sidelines understandably so, but he has shown over a while now that he has the potential for good scoring when the opportunity arises.
Brad Ebert (PTA) MID 534.6k 110
Ebert started the year slightly slowly, but has picked up a bit now and is sitting on a healthy average of 110. In only around 1,000 sides so far he has strong POD credentials and with a price of just over 530 grand still has some value to offer yet. Port are looking a good team in 2014, and players like Ebert, Boak and Wines can be expected to continue on with their outputs for at least a while to come.
Marc Murphy (CAR) MID 496.9k 109
SMurph always had doubts around him going into this season after struggling with the tag for a lot of last year, and while he has had the odd down game so far he seems to be handling it much better this time around. A big match on the weekend brought his season's average up to 109, and with around 32,000 picks to date his sub 500 grand pricing makes for an ideal upgrade for the risk-takers.
Jackson Macrae (WBD) MID 466k 109
Macrae continues to be a revelation for the Doggies this season, sitting safely alongside Wines as the stand-out draft picks from their year with an average of 109 and a price around the 460 grand mark. With Griffen building form and the likes of Dahlhaus spending more time through the guts he does have concerns around his ability to maintain his scoring, but for his 25,000 coaches so far the risk has been well worthwhile.
Travis Boak (PTA) MID 539.2k 96
Boak started the season slowly this year, after dominating last season, and his average of 96 is a solid reflection of this. However in recent games he has shown more of the form that served him and Port so well last year, averaging 114 from his last 3 matches and repaying the faith of the roughly 3,000 sides to back him in. Still priced on the high side for his average, the question is whether his scoring will drop off again or his price will keep rising.
Ryan Griffen (WBD) MID 525.5k 87
After a delayed start to the season, and a couple of shockers while getting back into the swing of things, Griff is starting to come back to the kind of form that cemented him as an elite midfielder last year. Averaging 87 so far, and now priced at only 525 grand, his back-to-back hundreds have started to put him back onto many SCer's radars. A huge POD with only around 5,000 picks to date, many will be bringing in Griffen this week, although with his BE and previous scores for the coaches looking at a double-downgrade he can probably be safely left for next week without too much pain.
PREMIUMS
Steve Johnson (GEE) MID 612.5k 126
Stevie J has been an interesting pick this season, with only 14,000 picks so far and losing his FWD eligibility many avoided the Cats star and may well be now regretting it. Averaging 126 after another big weekend Stevie J has all the markings of an elite midfielder, but so far the SC peloton seem to be waiting on a significant price-drop, to at least get him below 600 grand.
Steele Sidebottom (COL) MID 558.3k 107
Sidebottom has stepped his game up a little in the early stages of 2014, culminating in a handy 131 over the last few round of games including a 150+ last week. Now averaging 107 and sitting in under 2,000 teams he does have the potential to maintain, however with Swan building form and Fasolo stepping up it remains to be seen if he will or not. Collingwood isn't always the easiest team to rack up the points in.
Josh P Kennedy (SYD) MID 573.5k 114
JPK started the year slowly, after a relatively disappointing 2013, but has now picked up the pace and is averaging 124 from his last 3 games. An elite midfielder when on song, JPK has only made it into around 7,000 sides so far, but will certainly increase that number if he keeps his current form going. Priced pretty much spot on for his overall average, he offers great value if he keeps his numbers around the 120 mark.

RUCK
MID-PRICERS
Sam Jacobs (ADE) RUC 499.6k 104
Sauce has bounced back well from a somewhat disappointing 2013 season, after managing AA like numbers in 2012 he's back to a 100+ average this year and importantly staying on the park. With the ruck a real danger zone this season Jacobs has been one of the few to not cause their coaches too many headaches (so far) and his 22,000 odd selections should keep increasing week by week.
Shaun Hampson (RIC) RUC 404.8k 102
Hammer has been good value for the 13,000 that picked him early on, with Maric out he has managed an average of 102 and is still sitting only just above the 400 grand price range. Unfortunately for Hampson Maric will be back sometime soon, but he has hopefully already cemented a spot in the side, even if not as the number 1 ruckman. Missed a match early, which stung those that brought him in badly, but after a 127 in his last game he has shown the ability to produce good scores and may have been forgiven by most.
Robert Warnock (CAR) RUC 470.9k 94
A pick from left-field Warnock has long been touted as one of the premium tap-men in the game, but his skills everywhere else are in need of a bit of work still. So far this season Robbie has 2 scores in the 60's, including one playing back-up to Kreuez, and 3 above 110. This shows that when he's on he's on, but does have a habit of throwing in some stinkers from time to time. Bit like Carlton as a whole really. Priced on the high side for his overall average, but in less than 1,000 teams to date, Warnock is a high-risk POD but one that is unlikely to be in the leading players for his position come years end.

FORWARD
ROOKIES
Sam Lloyd (RIC) FWD 117.3k 93 +91k
Lloyd was a popular trade-in last week, after his impressive opening game, and while I warned most here to wait another week before bringing him in, that week is now over. Averaging 93 and facing a 90+ grand price rise this week, he will surely have to be the most traded in player this round. King, who Lloyd appears to have been brought in for, struggled in the Ressies on the weekend and may still be out for a while increasing Lloyd's appeal.
Jack Billings (StK) M/F 207.3k 57 +20k
Billings somehow wormed his way out of this week's original Best Buys, but not for long. Priced as a premium rookie at almost 210 grand he didn't bother the scorers too much in his opening game, but really came back with a bang on the weekend with a 101 and his first SC ton. Due to his opener his average is only 57 and he looks like only increasing in price by around 20 grand this week, but if the last game is anything to go by he could well be one of the golden rookies 2014.
MID-PRICERS
Alexander Fasolo (COL) FWD 292.8k 103
The Faz enjoyed being the Best Buy last week, so much so that he pumped out a 132 on the weekend and brought home 80 grand worth of bacon. Admittedly that 80 grand may have priced him out of contention for many teams, but with an average of 103 for the year and 55,000 picks so far he'll still be worth considering for a fair few sides this week. Expecting another 70 grand price rise after his next game, and playing the Dons on Anzac day no less, the sub 300 grand forward will again be a popular trade in I'd think.
Robbie Gray (PTA) M/F 470.2k 103
Robbie Gray showed on the weekend that there isn't only one Gray at Port worth considering this week, scoring a very nice 139 to bring his seasons average up to 103. With Wingard still rebuilding form, and suffering a decent knock on the weekend, Gray may or may not be able to maintain the rage for Port, but the fact that they are one of the highest scoring outfits so far this season remains a positive sign. Priced at 470 grand and only in around 7,000 sides Gray's a decent POD, and one of the better forwards around by numbers alone.
Matthew Pavlich (FRE) FWD 471.7k 96
The Pav is another player to start slowly before building decent form, averaging 96 for the season but a much healthier 113 from his last 3 games. A fairly popular trade-in over recent rounds his price is still at around 470 grand and he now finds himself in about 27,000 sides. The clear forward focus at Freo, and a dominant one at that, Pav looks likely to remain amongst the league's best this season.
PREMIUMS
Nick Riewoldt (StK) FWD 570k 121
NRoo, if he keeps his scoring going, will most likely be regular next week. Averaging 121 so far, and surprising many especially those that tipped the Saints for the spoon, he is still only in around 25,000 teams but is the highest scoring forward to date. Obviously the big question is how long he can keep this level of scoring going for, but by now those that started the year with him would likely be well in front on the ledger whether he maintains it or not. Currently in career-best form, it would take a brave coach to overlook Roo completely.
Patrick Dangerfield (ADE) M/F 558.1k 111
Dangerfield was the most popular forward picked this year, in 150,000 teams to date, and for good reason. A dominant midfielder last year and now forward eligible he started relatively slowly, as he did last season, but came back with a bang on the weekend and a massive 192. For the coaches that held off on him, such as me, that 192 really hurt and showed the risks of waiting for price drops on premiums. Now priced at about 560 grand he is a decent trade-in option this week, but really, last week was where it was at for Danger.
