Round 12 recap: Ablett. Ok. Your Round 11 score of 64 SC points proved your point. Your team (and Supercoaches all over the world) do need you. But next time you want to prove a point, let us know. Last week, the perma-captain (yes, he has been reinstated to his rightful place) responded with a huge 188 SC points silencing his doubters.
Well Ablett has a bye this week, so let’s have a look at the numbers in what could be a difficult captain’s decision this week …

Note: Fantastic record against West Coast. Poor game in Rd 10 last year when he was in the middle of a four game slump affected by injury (scores of 98, 80, 86 and 94 at the time at an average of 90). Two weeks after this game, he made the trip to Arizona. Taking this score out, his average rises to 127 against West Coast. He may attract the Scott Selwood tag who had most recently tagged Pendlebury in the QF last year. Coming off a fantastic 160 SC points last week after missing the two games prior with injury.

Rd 15 2005: 141 SC points, 21 disposals

Note: Solid record against Geelong. Is normally manned by Harry Taylor. A shocking score in Rd 7 2010 when he gave away 4 free kicks and had plenty of clangers. Returning from injury this week. Has missed six weeks. Prior to injury, he had scored 110, 94, 115, 115 and 90 (average 105).

SF 2007: 135 SC points, 37 disposals
Rd 2 2007: 89 SC points, 21 disposals
Average is 104 SC points with 28 disposals.

Note: Poor record against North Melbourne. Only one big score back in 2005. Four scores under 100 in his eight games against North. Played head to head against Swallow in the game last year and was limited to 21 possessions. A solid 126 last round which had followed his bye. Prior to the bye he only managed poor scores of 58 and 93.
Selwood v. Sydney
Rd 23 2011: 105 SC points, 22 disposals

Rd 20 2009: 66 SC points, 19 disposals
Rd 7 2009: 140 SC points, 34 disposals

Rd 5 2008: 69 SC points, 20 disposals
Rd 13 2007: 69 SC points, 19 disposals
Average is 93 SC points with 24 disposals.
Note: Poor record against the Swans. Always gets tagged. Last year tagged by McGlynn and Bolton. Had usually attracted the Kirk tag before that. Only one big score back in 2009 when he scored 140. Coming off a bye which had followed a huge score of 154 which had followed 104, 110 and 140 (average of 127).

Rd 14 2006: 53 SC points, 12 disposals
Average is 88 SC points with 22 disposals.
Note: Poor record against Fremantle. Has been tagged by Crowley in this two most recent games against them. Scored a poor 54 SC points with 6 disposals after injuring his ankle in the second quarter. Prior to the bye last week, he had scored 149 and 140.
Stanton v. Fremantle

Rd 19 2007: 67 SC points, 19 disposals
Rd 2 2007: 123 SC points, 23 disposals
Rd 14 2006: 99 SC points, 24 disposals
Average is 86 SC points with 21 disposals.
Note: Poor record against Fremantle. Most recently played head to head against Hasleby and was injured in the fourth quarter. In 2009 he was tagged by Hill (Rd 21) and tagged by Dodd (Rd 2). Copped the Crowley tag in 2008. Had a bye last week but had only managed scores of 83, 96 and 72 (average of 84). These scores had followed a huge few weeks where he had scored 142, 164 and 154 (average of 153).
My opinion: Hard pick this week with Ablett missing. Hawthorn, Carlton and St Kilda having byes also makes the choice hard. Greater Western Sydney play Melbourne but I can’t think of any Melbourne players who have the potential to score big.
Based on the numbers above, the clear choice is Swan. Following him, the choice is extremely difficult. In my opinion, my next choice would be Watson (who has been in great recent form) with Thompson and Boyd close behind (as both are playing teams that are struggling).
To summarise: Swan, then Watson, then Thompson and then Boyd.
My smoky pick this week is Goodes who, despite returning from injury, should have a huge game back at the SCG against Geelong.
Good luck to all!!
