On behalf of the CEO of the Spelunkers I am delighted to announce our first major sponsor. Red Bull Australia has announced a deal with Charlie's Opening to become a brand ambassador for the energy drink. Phil Davis the inaugural captain of the Spelunkers will be the face of Red Bull for the team. Davis joins a wealth of other Australian sportsmen associated with the Australian subsidiary of Red Bull, including Formula One driver Mark Webber, and surfer Mick Fanning. This new partnership marks the first time that Red Bull Australia has joined forces with a make believe football franchise. Davis is one of Australia’s leading athletes and Red Bull are delighted to add Phil and the Spelunkers to their stable of high performing teams.
Founded in 1899 by a group of Danish, English and Dutch footballers led by famous Tasmanian explorer John Franklin, the club has become a symbol of underground and Tasmanian culture. The official club anthem is "Cabin Fever" written and performed by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. It is the state's fourth richest football club in terms of revenue, with an annual turnover of $398. Speculation has always plagued the club as with such low revenue, how do they manage to have such world class facilities and attract some of the biggest football names away from other clubs? The club holds a long-standing rivalry with the Cradle Mountain Devils, and recently tensions have escalated between the Spelunkers and the team from Penguins from Mawson Bay. With a new state of the art underground stadium being completed in the coming days, and having recently announced a new record sponsorship deal with Red Bull the club's viability is now ensured until 2015. With further big announcements planned in the near future regarding number one ticket holders and further sponsors keen to get on board, the Spelunkers are sure to make an impact in the newly formed ORRFA. Club Statistics and useful information Average age: 23 Average height: 188cm Average weight: 86.5kg Average draft pick: 26 Stadium Capacity: 15000 Stadium Name: The Red Bull Cauldron... nicknamed "The Pit" Founded: 1899
On behalf of the CEO of the Spelunkers I am delighted to announce our number one ticket holders for the 2012 ORRFA season. We are delighted to welcome Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and David Boon as joint number 1 ticket holders and ambassadors to the club. Having both grown up and lived the majority of their lives in Tasmania, both the Crown Princess and Mr. Boon are synonymous with Tasmania, and are keen supporters of the Spelunkers. The Crown Princess will only be in attendance on an infrequent basis, however Mr. Boon is planning on attending every home match, as "if there is free booze, I'll be there"

The club CEO stated that it was a massive step forward from their previous stadium, and who really could blame him:
2012 Squad finalised The football department are delighted with the 2012 playing list. Having done extensive hours of study over beep tests, biomechanic assessments and psychological profiling, when it came to the draft period the List Manager, Bandit, was confident in his selections. The 2012 player list is: Phil Davis (Captain) Andrew Swallow (Vice Captain) Matthew Kreuzer Cyril Rioli Heath Shaw Leigh Montagna Drew Petrie Heath Grundy Kieran Jack Brent Moloney Ben Reid Mark LeCras Zac Clarke Robin Nahas Eric McKenzie Josh Hill Matthew Jaensch Chris Knights Cale Hooker Daniel Menzel Jarod Grant Jesse Stringer Andy Otten Nick Haynes Tom Sheridan Adam Tomlinson
Player Profile : Phil Davis Full name: Phil Davis Date of birth: 30 August 1990 (age 21) Original team : North Adelaide Draft: #10th, 2008 AFL Draft, Adelaide Draft: #165 (10th Round) 2012 ORFFA Preseason Draft Height: 197 cm Weight: 94 kg Position: Defender In April 2012, Davis announced that he would be moving to the Charlie's Opening Spelunkers stating "“This is an exciting day for me and I’m pleased to be making this announcement in the new home of the Spelunkers, The Pit." “This has certainly not been an easy decision to make as everyone would hopefully understand. But being here today I am very proud to have made this commitment and I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead." “As I’ve said previously, I’m extremely thankful to the Mawson Penguins and their supporters for everything they have done for me over the last three weeks, but they simply could not offer me what the Spelunkers offer and now is the time for me to look forward." “The Spelunkers have a big future ahead of them and that was a driving force behind my decision. With the draft picks and the quality of the players already signed, I can’t wait to move to the Opening and start my career with the Spelunkers. They have the football framework to succeed, and to help me achieve my lifetime goal of an ORFFA premiership". This led to rival Mawson Penguins football manager Xenomorph saying the club was "bloody disappointed" to miss out on such a young player who was taken with a high draft pick in the 2008 AFL Draft. On May 10, 2012, Davis was named as the Captain of the Spelunkers, and immediately began preparations to lead the team into their first match for the season against Cradle Mountain.

Match review : Red Bull Spelunkers away at Cradle Mountain Cradle Mountain 1215 def by Charlie's Opening 1225 In a very tightly contested battle of the Tasmanian rivals, Charlie's Opening managed to steal the Map of Tassie classic by a couple of whiskers, a thrilling 10 point victory thanks to a Sam Gilbert effort, and a Dayne Zorko vest.. Gilbert struggled to come to grips on the iced over surface at the Southern end of the ground, even after multiple applications of salt had been applied to try and thaw the surface prior to the match. Maybe he should have swapped his moulded soles for crampons like Heath Shaw. Shaw had a field day, collecting possession on an as needed basis and occasionally rotating off the ground to slam down a few of the fantastic party pies that were put on for the team. The battle of the ruckman turned out to be everything it was built up to and more, with the Big Russian Jamar taunting Kreuzer by throwing some of the ice preventing salt into the centre circle in a Sumo type challenge to Kreuzer, who was so scared a yellow icicle appeared out of the bottom of his shorts. However when the siren blew and the big man kicked into gear, he took the bragging rights from the Russian who was heard to mutter "Next time, I will break you" The midfield of the Devils dominated in the guts, but Trouser Snake Nahas, made to look like an averagely endowed man due to the coldness in the air, found the added freedom in the shorts allowed him to move up forward and kick a few goals right when it mattered most. Many thanks to the Devil's match committee for fantastic hospitality, including keeping a few extra pies aside for Heater to demolish after his MOM performance. Thank god someone stole the keys to the team bus from him as he was heard to utter something about "going out for a spin to pick up Dids, as he would love this sh*t". The Opening return to The Pit this week for a much anticipated match against the penguins from Mawson. Rumour has it that the Commish has been absent for a few days discussing live streaming rights to the Penguins with Optus, and that may leave him a little under prepared come game day. A likely ins for this week will be Joey Montagna with Jack being dropped to the bench and Stringer left to ponder his career in the reserves.
Match review : Red Bull Spelunkers home to Mawson Base Penguins Spelunkers by 27, 1300 to 1273 The football rivalry between Charlie's Opening and Mawson Base is one of the few longstanding football rivalries at a trans Southern Ocean level. Beginning in 1974 when the Spelunkers lost the 1974 Grand Final to Mawson with a kick after the siren the rivalry between the two teams has become one of the best known football rivalries in the world. The animosity that exists between the two rivals is born out of a strange mix of respect, dislike, malice and schadenfreude. When this type of emotion exists between squads, what is usually a simple match-up between a home and an away team becomes nothing short of a battle between good and evil. Having witnessed Mawson's team play in a practice match a few weeks ago, I can confidently state that the fans of the Penguins have no qualms about publicly questioning my parentage, sexuality, intelligence or whether or not I know exactly where I can stick that Red Bull I am drinking. Therefore the game on the weekend took on an atmosphere that was nothing short of a biblical battle between the forces of the purest good (The Spelunkers) and darkest evil (The Penguins). In this particular match up David Swallow was Satan himself, and with older brother Andrew playing the part of home town Messiah, his sole purpose was to vanquish him and the evil horde of demons that were his teammates. Even before the first bounce, the walking Justin Koschitzke took a cheap-shot at Heath Shaw's waistline, commenting on the fact that a number of the four'n'twenty's he downed at Cradle Mountain last week had not resulted in a positive skin fold. This was the only motivation that Shaw required, taking to Koschitzke like a deep fried Kipfler chip, and amassing 133 points in the process. Kieran Jack and Drew Petrie tore the Penguins a new sphincter, while Swallow showed his younger brother how to play the game. A fourth quarter groin injury to Ben Reid being the only downside for the Opening. A full inquiry will be launched into the injury, as reports indicate it was an behind the ball punch to the jewels from Ryan BustaNac caused the injury. Ryan was heard to state later that he was simply living up to his dirty nickname. While no shortage of venom spewed between the two teams on the field, the stands themselves were awash in a sea of vulgarity, insults and epithets the likes of which would make make even the most world-weary sailor blush. In the end the Spelunkers won in a very tight affair, and take bragging rights into the next match.
