More from the mind of TigersTooTough
It's time for part 2 where I'll be covering 2 of the best teams in the last five years, 2 of the worst and North Melbourne and Gold Coast. Differing starts to their seasons have meant fluctuating SC scores between each of these teams but there are certainly some players that have impressed and some that haven't.
Let's get stuck in!
Geelong (7 wins 1 loss)
SuperCoach SuperStar: Steve Johnson (avg 115.20)
Bolter: Mathew Stokes (avg 100.62)
Disappointment: Tom Hawkins (avg 74.71)
The Cats have been supreme with their only blemish coming this past round against Collingwood. Steve Johnson has only played 5 games but his class has shone through in each of his performances. He has been consistently brilliant however injuries seem to be playing a bit of a part in his season. Jimmy Bartel (avg 109.38) has also been very consistent and is proving those who thought he was over the hill”, wrong. Joel Selwood (avg 109.75) has been up and down but is a star who will get better as the season goes on. Mathew Stokes has broken out this season and is proving to be the real deal. His doppelganger Allan CHRISTENSEN (avg 89.75) has impressed as well.
Tom Hawkins has proved to be a waste of money but at such a low price at the moment, he may be worth a punt. His back has caused him problems in recent times so watch him over the next few weeks. It was though that <a href="http://tooserious.net/Player.aspx?id=867&name=Mitch DUNCAN">Mitch DUNCAN (avg 72.75) was going to breakout this season but the pressure of the next big thing&rdquo; tag may be proving to be too much. Josh CADDY (avg 38.50) was thought to provide a little more this season but he is a work in progress.
Geelong has a nice run ahead however they will typically rest a few players against GWS and Gold Coast. One player who won't be rested is James Kelly (avg 88.50). He will return to the team just in time for Geelong's first match at Simonds Stadium against Gold Coast and his work rate will pull in huge scores. Selwood should also have a good run.
Gold Coast (4 wins 4 losses)
SuperCoach SuperStar: Jaegar O'Meara (avg 92.38)
Bolter: Charlie Dixon (avg 104.50)
Disappointment: Greg Broughton (avg 75.86)
I can see people wondering why Gary Ablett (avg 135.12) isn't my SuperStar for the first portion of the season. The best player in the competition and the player that scores so highly every week isn't the Suns best SC player. The only reason is that, as the perma-captain, he has had a few under 115 point matches which is a bit frustrating. Jaeger has been brilliant and his injection into the team has coincided with the evolvement of the Suns. He has an X-Factor and tackling pressure about him that suggests he will be the best player in the competition in the next 4-5 seasons. Charlie DIXON has been a revelation in the ruck, up forward, down back and even through the midfield. Only scored poorly in the two matches he got injured in. My man (and seemingly BT's) Dion PRESTIA (avg 91) has been very solid while The Superboot&rdquo; Trent MCKENZIE (avg 91.50) has provided devastating rebound.
Greg Broughton has lived up to his recent reputation this season with fluctuating scores. Harley Bennell (avg 84.33) and David SWALLOW (avg 80.88) have been a little under par so far however they will rise. I really like the way Swallow is playing off half back and when he goes into the midfield, he will definitely lift. Zachary SMITH (avg 76.75) and Danny Stanley (avg 75.50) have played poorly this season. Unfortunately, big Zac has ruptured his ACL and is out for the season.
The Suns now have a self-belief that they can be competitive in every match and they have proven that so far this season. They don't need Gazza to fire for them to win. They have a tough run coming up but expect more of the same from Ablett, Prestia and Harbrow (avg 88.38) and a rising output from Bennell and Swallow. Daniel GORRINGE should be the number 1 beneficiary from Zac Smith's long-term injury and may be worth a look at $149k.
GWS Giants (0 wins 8 losses)
SuperCoach SuperStar: Callan Ward (avg 98.12)
Bolter: Stephen Coniglio (avg 81.62)
Disappointment: Tom Scully (avg 69.75)
GWS have had quarters where they have shown how much quality is in their squad. But more often than not, it has been a case of other teams being too big, too strong&rdquo;. The fitness levels of the Giants have improved but not to the point where they can run out games consistently well. Callan Ward has been a warrior for the team however, the pressure of being the number 1 midfielder has got to him at times. <a href="http://tooserious.net/Player.aspx?id=2108&name=Adam Treloar">Adam Treloar (avg 84) has been up and down while Stephen Coniglio and Dylan Shiel (avg 80.38) have shown their class at times. Coniglio has been one of their better players but for these young Giants, consistency will continue to be an issue.
Tom SCULLY and Rhys Palmer (avg 66.17) are two former first round, highly touted draft picks yet are still to come on. Scully has shown glimpses of dash which is promising while Palmer is shutting down our best running defenders. He did a very good job this past weekend but it translates to poor SC scores. Two players that have also been disappointing from last year's lofty standards are Toby Greene (avg 68.38) and Jonathan Giles (avg 74.75). Giles especially hurts me as I picked him thinking he could carry on from last year's form. I, along with almost 10 000 coaches, was wrong.
All of GWS' opponents are tough in the next 8 rounds. They may look to the match against the Bulldogs as a winnable one but realistically, it's hard to see them winning a game at all this year. Not much SC action to be expected. Callan Ward is a trooper and will average 100+ but that's about it.
Hawthorn (7 wins 1 loss)
SuperCoach SuperStar: Sam Mitchell (avg 112.50)
Bolter: Luke Hodge (avg 102.71)
Disappointment: Lance Franklin (avg 88.75)
The Hawks had the toughest first 7 rounds you could imagine and they pulled away with just the one loss. That is a sign of a brilliant football team. They have an even spread of SC scoring as well which is really interesting for the avid statistician. Sam Mitchell has dropped below 100 four times which isn't great but his role is attracting some massive scores which, to me, means he is the Hawks best SC player thus far. Cyril Rioli (avg 111) was great until he got injured which is the story of his career unfortunately. Jarryd Roughead (avg 97.62) started off poorly but has shown his class recently and captain Luke Hodge has turned back the clock with some masterful performances. He will, however, be nursed through the rest of the year.
Lance Franklin. The best forward in the competition. A once in a generation player. A superstar. And a player that is being dragged down by a bloody dotted line at the bottom of a piece of paper. We found last year that contract negotiations upset the form of Travis Cloke and it is happening to Buddy as well. Here's to hoping he can bounce back. Brad Sewell (avg 77.80) has been poorer this year than other years but is an underrated star who will find his way to keep chugging along. Brian Lake (avg 71) is in a similar situation. Can someone let me know if Grant Birchall (avg 94.12) has been playing in the last month?
A delightful run for the Hawks means that some players are going to be rested. Don't be surprised to see some late withdrawals&rdquo;. Players like, Hodge, Mitchell, Birchall, Roughead and Franklin may be given a week off to fix themselves up as we approach the bye rounds. One player who may play all matches (well, I'm hoping anyway), is Jordan Lewis (avg 91.38). He should start to score 110+ against these lower rated teams. One to watch.
Melbourne (1 win 7 losses)
SuperCoach SuperStar: Mark Jamar (avg 88.50)
Bolter: Matt Jones (avg 75)
Disappointment: Jack Watts (avg 65)
First and foremost, I thought it was worth mentioning that Melbourne had a real crack on Sunday against the Tigers and really tackled hard and put pressure on. You could see their output lifted and they showed some grit. Now, SC wise, it's been really poor for the Demons. The Big Russian Mark Jamar has been their most consistent player which is saying something. Nathan Jones (avg 87.50) tries really hard every match and is probably their best scorer. It is worth including Matt Jones and Dean Terlich (avg 73.43) who have really provided great cover in recent weeks scoring 80+. It's been a good showing from those two mature-age recruits.
Due to their poor performances, you could really argue that the rest of the team should be in this Disappointment category. I don't want to sit here and list all the names of every disappointing player but they really need better outputs from Jack TRENGOVE (avg 72.33), Aaron Davey (avg 47.50 and James Frawley (avg 63.75) who have all been solid point scorers at some stage in their careers.
I wouldn't look at bringing in any Demons players for the rest of the year unless they start playing more rookies. The future doesn't look bright unfortunately but I hope they can put on the same grit and fight they were able to produce in Round 8.
North Melbourne (3 wins 5 losses)
SuperCoach SuperStar: Todd Goldstein (avg 114.75)
Bolter: Scott D. Thompson (avg 96.75)
Disappointment: Shaun Atley (69.62)
The Kangaroos have been quite impressive yet only have 3 wins on the board. They haven't been able to hold on in a few matches which is worrying from a fitness perspective. For all the talk of Majak Daw (avg 60.80) and Daniel Currie taking over the ruck division, Todd Goldstein has proven everyone wrong. He has been fantastic so far and hasn't looked like stopping his great run. Andrew Swallow (avg 108.75) has been very good once again and moves smoothly under the radar while, Daniel Wells (avg 97.88) and Jack Ziebell (avg 92.62) have also been good. Scott D. Thompson has been the Bolter with some remarkable performances up back but, if he can continue his performances, Aaron BLACK (avg 95) might find himself in that position by Round 16.
Shaun ATLEY was all the rage preseason but has failed to fire. Many took a risk by picking him however his performances have been well below par. Not to be outdone, the other player that was a popular conversation topic for SC defences was Sam Wright (avg 49.86) who has been really bad as well. There wasn't as much expectation on him as there was on Atley though which saves him from being the category headliner. Ben JACOBS (avg 36.50) hasn't been given much of an opportunity which really rounds off the popular preseason defensive trio from the &lsquo;Roos.
North Melbourne have a decent run coming up which means Swallow, Goldstein, Wells and Ziebell should continue to score well. Ben CUNNINGTON (avg 86.25) has been quite impressive as well and is one that may surprise a few with some big scores.
Two parts down and one to go. It's been interesting going through these statistics so far and hopefully, you guys have enjoyed it as well. Again, put your thoughts in the comments section down below. I'd like to see who you guys would put in these categories. And if your club has been covered, feel free to tell me how ill-informed and na&iuml;ve I have been when covering your club. J
Alright guys, I'll get back soon with the final part of the review.
