Get around the table, it's time for the biggest sporting event in the history of, well, in the world.
Anyways, looks like there's a couple of comps going this time, so if you've got a league, jump in the comments.
For the official comp however:TooSerious
Haven't had the time to sit down and plan out any optimal strategies, so I'm going to enjoy reading a few comments.
And hey, this made me laugh.

Hi, PL here, since Walesy kindly started this, I'll add some info as thanks
First off is the official game of the tournament, Macdonald's FIFA World Cup Fantasy
http://en.mcdonalds.fantasy.fifa.com/
League: TooSerious League (link)
So this game we have a salary cap of 100M to spend on a team and it will be stretched pretty thin by needing to fill 23 positions. There's a restriction of 3 players per nation, which is a little bit flexible and eventually as the tournament goes on you can pick more players per nation. The biggest thing to note for fantasy players that stands out is in this game you can sub players who don't perform, with those that haven't played yet - it's like the captain loophole only with starting playings, if only we had that in SC! So yeah, make the most of it and put your early players on the pitch first, in order to swing your others players in if they don't score well. Only thing is no rolling lock out, so the players you have are the ones you have to work with.
There's a few extra stats that score than in normal football games, like balls into penalty box, blocked shots for outfield players, and fouls as well as cards will impact negatively on scores. There are also bonus points available for each position so be sure to read up on all those rules!
Next up we have our mates at VirtualSports and their addition to the collection with World Cup DreamTeam

TooSerious League: 425900 (full)
Another TS League: 669291 (name may be the same, if so apologise)
Fairly straight forward game. There's no price restriction or salary. Just two players per team. Then just pick a starting line up each week. After game starts you have 36 trades for whole tournament (6 to use each round). As the tournament progresses you can trade in more per country as well. I think filling your team with as many players as you can from those teams you think will progress to second round and beyond should help conserve trades so you can utilise them effectively.
Last but not least, TheWorldGame (SBS) have their own fantasy game, TAB Fantasy Football.

Similar to the official game there's a salary cap for the teams and it is set at 100 ‘points' as well, but only 11 players to select. Very benevolent in players per country too, you're allowed 4. Forwards are most expensive, with value going down the positions. Transfers are limited too but you have a certain number over a period of time (3 in group stages) with 15 and 10 available during the knockout stages. This game is more about tactical use of transfers and your starting squad I think.
Please be careful! Having all sorts of problems with this game. Don't leave the team selection screen when you log in without choosing your squad, you can't actually go back into it without logging out and logging back in. I've sent an email but if anyone else experience this problem or has another workaround, let me know! I can't even get into the team screen with Firefox, so be warned.
So there it is, that's the games. Join as many as you like. Get in quick because they all close tonight before the first game starts.
Got to be honest most of my knowledge is from the SBS guide so my selections aren't going to be picked with any authority and be pretty rushed. However happy to trade advice or comment if anyone has specific questions, sure there are other knowledgeable fans here. Of course feel free for general discussion on the World Cup too!
Fantasy World Cup.
