Welcome back everybody, hope you had good break.
It's still February, but for those of us who take it seriously the time has come to start planning our 2015 SC team. For me this meant logging into the SC website and attempting my first crack at selecting 30 players. After about my fifth selection, I realised that I needed a plan (because clearly I didn't currently have one).
Should I load up on elite midfielders, or make use of the extended 11-slot MID line to load up on rookie-priced players instead?
Set-and-forget ruck pariing, or mid-priced madness?
I needed to do some research.
    Some Technical Stuff
The starting salaries for 2015 are (mostly) based on the 2014 SC average for each player, where each point-per-game (ppg) results in $5,375 worth of starting price. For example, a player who averaged exactly 96 last year (such as Paul Chapman) is priced at $516,000 for 2015.
There are exceptions of course. New draftees have been arbitrarily assigned a starting price, with senior-listed players starting from $117,300 (or an expected average of 21.8 ppg) and rookie-listed players starting from $102,400. First round draft picks attracted an additional premium starting with Laverde at $127k and adding $5k for each previous draft pick all the way up to McCartin at the top end of town on $222k. The difference being that McCartin is initially priced as a player who will score 41 ppg whereas Laverde is priced as a player who will score 24 ppg.
Then there also exceptions for players who missed a lot of games during 2014, or maybe even all of 2014. The way this has been determined is arbitrary in every sense, because not every injured player got a discount and not every discounted player received the same level of discount. Discounts range from 70% (Cameron Delaney, who played no games in 2014) to 10% (applied to a group of 20 players including Ben Reid (4 games), Daniel Wells (7 games) and Tom Clurey (1 game)). Where a discount was applied for a given player, the 2015 start price was reduced by a fixed percentage from the expected start price (using $5,375 for every 1 ppg). Where a player had no games in 2014, their 2013 average was adopted.
    Some Subjective Stuff
Once I had a feel for the various 2015 starting prices, I took a look at each line (DEF, MID, RUC, FWD) to see what was available. For reference, the categories that I adopted to classify various levels of players were as follows:
    Elite: >$600k or >111 ppg
Premium: $500k to $600k or 93 ppg to 111 ppg
    Mid-price: $200k to $500k or 37 ppg to 93 ppg
    Rookie: <$200k or <37 ppg
Each to their own if you have alternate categories that you like to use. But these are the ones that I settled on.
The DEF options in 2015 appear to be really poor. After player positions were reassigned (many D/M players are now M only) there are no elite players only four premium players based on 2014 form. If there aren't a whole bunch of DEF players who improve dramatically on their starting price this year, this line is going to score the least number of SC points for each SC team by a considerable margin. It is highly unlikely that there will be 6 elite DEF players this year and there may not even by a total of 6 premium DEF players this year.
The MID line has always provided the best elite SC options and this is still the case, with 13 elite starting-salaried MID players. The best teams this year will hope to have 8 elite players on this line by the business end of the season. Having premium (not elite) players in any of the onfield MID slots at the end of the season will likely mean that you are leaking points each week compared to a team which upgrades to 8 elite MIDs.
The RUC line is tricky to gauge, with the announcement of changes to the way in which SC points will be awarded from ruck contests. In general, ruck players will score less in 2015 than they did in 2014 if they repeat their performance level. The decline will affect ruckmen who get a decent number of SC points from disposals or tackles to a lesser degree than it will affect a mostly tap-ruckman who can't get hands on the ball around the ground. But I expect that it will negatively affect all ruckmen to some extent.
Ignoring the scoring changes for ruck contests for the moment, there were 3 elite ruckmen in 2014 and 6 premium ruckmen. The best teams would have finished with an elite R1-R2 combo if possible, but many teams probably had to settle for one elite ruck and one premium ruck. Will there be any elite rucks in 2015? Perhaps not due to the scoring changes. Perhaps we should only expect a RUC line to provide 1 elite and one premium level player this year.
Lastly the FWD line. Robbie Gray almost sneaks into my definition of elite based on his 2014 form, but not quite. There were a total of 12 premium FWD players based on 2014 scoring. An obvious parallel can be drawn to options in the DEF line, however the FWD line options look a bit healthier due to the larger number of premiums available.
    In A Perfect World

If the spread of players (elite-premium-midprice-rookie) at the end of 2015 is similar to 2014, and accounting for a slight reduction in the level that RUC players achieve in 2015, I believe that the best SC teams in 2015 will probably finish with 9 elite players (8 MID, 0 DEF, 0 FWD, 1 RUC) and 13 premium players (6 DEF, 6 FWD and 1 RUC).
Why is this an important consideration? It all comes down to looking at your starting players and evaluating which of them you expect to need to upgrade across the course of the season. Upgrades require trades and there are only a fixed number of those to work with (unless you want to play that other fantasy game of course).
    The Floggers Version 1.0
So I messed around with team selection for a while and this is what I came up with as a first pass. The intent was to follow guns-and-rookies approach as much as possible, avoiding mid-priced options. I nearly managed it. But then I had to put Bontempelli in the team, so Lycett went out. Sue me.
    /Portals/0/Users/222/74/4574/RMT%20PS.JPG' style='font-size: 14px;
All of the rookie-priced players are probably interchangeable over the next 4 weeks or so. Most will disappear at some stage and some will probably even reappear a number of times. [span style='font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit; background-color: transparent;]We will have to watch the preseason to find out which line has the most rookie-priced options who are likely to play early games.
    Some Thoughts About Team Structure
In my first attempt, I have a structure that is (elite/premium/midprice/rookie):
    DEF: 0/0/4/4
    MID: 4/1/0/6
    RUC: 1/0/1/1
    FWD: 0/2/2/4
Now assuming that I could get to an optimal final structure of:
    DEF: 0/4/2/4
    MID: 8/0/0/3
    RUC: 1/1/0/1
    FWD: 0/6/0/2
that would require either a serious number of upgrades or a lot of my initial picks to 'upgrade themselves' by showing a marked improvement in 2015 from the 2014 form line. Well, they do call this part of the footy year the season of optimism I guess.
I think I still have a lot of work to do. FFS I have Shaun Higgins in my team! Hopefully I have given those who have read this far some food for thought. It would be great to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
What structure do you think you will adopt this year?

Well I timed my visit back to the site well! Great post Jason, some great insights and thoughts. I've been a bit slow getting started this year and you have given me some ideas. Might try a new strategy this year.

Higgins! Never again, though who knows he might make me rue that stance.

Good post, about time we had one typed up by one of us!

Structurally I think you're fine, but few reservations, like having a near full priced Higgins, an injured SDT, and Fisher of all people. One good intra-club game wont be enough to sway me to look at him. Would rather Newnes or Hurn at that low range price in defence.

Like the Bonts pick in the forward line but as a 2nd year player I'd have cold-feet (did have him in my side) and think Titch is better in that price range as he's having an injury free pre-season. Speaking of those that rose a lot, I think the same applies to Parker. Broke out big time but can't see him rising higher than that with Hanners, JPK, Jack, McVeigh, Titch (not to mention McGlynn and Bird) all in the side too.

Structurally is good though, 1 full-priced ruck with NicNat and the top mid and fwd combo too, not a lot better to be done with it, 15 guys you hope to be premiums. As GnR as you can get.

For rookies, it's a wait and see approach but I don't think I'd put any of Smith, Goddard, Newman, Hamling, Blakely, Krakouer, Daniel into my team unless they get named round 1. But it's all up into the air until the pre-season games start, a lot can change.

Right now the rookie situation mirrors the premiums, the forward line is stacked and the defensive line is barren. Can't remember a year like this.

Thompson is training again after a knee cleanup that limited his output in 2014.

Fisher is VALUE. With some risk.

Higgins is a placeholder until I find a better option. Which I probably will. Thinking about KK for instance.

Picking the right backline Saint will be massive this year. Newnes, Savage and Fisher all putting their hand up to a claim.

      Good article J.

I've gone a pretty similar route with my team so far. Trying to go a bit higher-end with some guns but that has left me with M Watson in defense, don't think I'll end up starting with him but if he can keep his average around 80 then he should make $100k. May well end up dropping my 5th gun mid for Rich and bringing someone decent into the backline.

Also some POD's I really like this year are Bennell, Treloar and Maric

      Thanks for the post Jason.

I laughed when I saw Higgins and at the same time thought it wasn't a bad idea. NicNat looks like a popular choice given price and Cox retirement, however I have Jacobs and Goldstein as set and forget for now given their durability, but that might change.

Looks like you have gone Selwood over Fyfe, which might not be a bad idea given Selwood proven to be more durable, but Fyfe might have a higher ceiling.

Bontempeli has been in and out of my team, but currently leaning towards Titch. If given a clear run, Titch could end up being the highest scoring fwd.

Backline is a nightmare and will be a major advantage if you get it right from the start.

NAB cup should throw up some good rookie choices hopefully.

With Grima gone, and Hansen touch and go to be fit for the opening and articles like this http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/north-melbourne-kangaroos-walking-fine-line-to-be-fully-fit-by-round-1-brad-scott-says-20150216-13gcdz.html where Brad Scott himself is admitting these guys are underdone, then I am extremely wary of SDT. Especially if he can't do his high-scoring intercept/rebound role from pre-14 and has to play more as a lockdown defender again like last year which all indications are pointing too. There are too many options around his price bracket to be concerned with him.

Like I said, Newnes is looking like the Swallow of this year, if not in production numbers, in must-have value. If you're looking for value, I don't think it's there in a 33 year old defender who only played 7 games last year. Look at Adcock instead in that case. No Harwood or Hanley in that back flank, Claye Beams is hardly going to keep him out or even look at Heritier being included in the Melbourne midfield, he's never had a problem finding the ball. Around that $400k mark there is Docherty and Hampton, all ready to go bang this year.

Down into the mid-pricers there is KK, more wing time is slated, another with publicised increased time in the midfield is Luke McDonald, Mayes if he can play his normal forward flank role. Then you have guys like Savage and Johanissen who both finished last season with a bang, others like Seedsman, Vlastuin and Ibbotson or Yeo, Ricky Henderson too if Smith goes permanently into midfield (double bonus there).

It's never really been options that is the problem with the defence this year, it's always been which ones and we really need some to standout in a big way this pre-season.

Would pick Geary before I would Fisher. There's also Wright at an expensive rookie price who's been hyped up to play on the half back too

Will post my current draft team too. My biggest worries at the moment are: 1) To Ablett or not to Ablett 2) To TBC or not to TBC (or any R/F in forward line) because that changes structure a lot and 3) Will the real defence rookies please stand up!

DEF: Shaw, Smith (M), Hibberd, Hurn, Newnes (M), S.Edwards, Maynard, McGuinness (M)
MID: Pendles, Fyfe, Selwood, Swallow, Steven, Newton, Boekhurst, Anderson, Freeman, D.McKenzie (D), Steele (F)
      RUC: NicNat, Leuenberger, Read (F)
FWD: Delidio (M), Bennell (M), Swan (M), Mitchell (M), Salem, Clark, Hogan, Lambert (M)

      Cash: <$10k

Thanks for getting something up Jase, hopefully it will generate some discussion here.

      My thoughts on structure at this stage;

1/ it's looking like there will be no playable rookies in the backline so Whitecross if named could be the cheapest option at D6. Whilst you could squeeze 1 or 2 midpricers in there I think a minimum of 3 premiums will be required

2/ the forward line is a bounty of riches and whilst the premiums are tempting, you have to generate cash somewhere and there is a plethora of rookies up fwd so I'm looking at Salem for F4

I'm also struggling with Ablett decision, but too afraid to leave him out at this stage.
I will be keeping an eye on Lycett and TBC during NAB cup, but have a set and forget ruck combo at the moment.
DEF line looks solid given the limited options, but once rookies present themselves, might need to revisit.
If both Swallow and Steven make top 10 mids, it might be a masterstroke. I will most likely start with Swallow as my M5, but don't think I could take risk with two of them.
If I had Leuenberger, I would definitely consider R/F in fwd line based on his history with injuries.
Fwd line looks good. Will keep an eye on Salem during NAB cup.

Fisher has 10% value built into his starting price, if he holds his somewhat restricted output from 2014. 10% on 450k is decent coin.

Fyfe's bye is problematic with the other elite MIDs. But I agree and have thought about Fyfe too.

Re DEF situation. It doesn't really matter where your upgrades are, as long as you keep them to a minimum. I don't necessarily agree with your stated need to start 3 DEF premiums.

I considered Bennell. Looks to have plateaued in SC scoring a bit, didn't see enough upside at the moment. Would need to impress in NAB rounds to make my team I think.

No love for Griffin Jason? Dig. Seems Rocky rated too expensive by many, but think any team will need one of Rocky or GAJ. Risky to have none, particularly with Captain choice. Do people consider Dayne Beams is overpriced?
