Supercoach Season Preview 2012 - Brisbane

    2012 Supercoach Player Ranking Chart

    2012 List Analysis:

Brisbane is a team that is not made at all in the image of their coach.   Apart from the red hair of course!  A team of battlers and triers grouped into a cohesive unit that looks steady but never dominating.   From the list analysis, its about right.   Therefore this season one can see the ranks of the Lions Lower-Mid collection moving up towards the Midprice and starting to improve the real depth of the team, rather than seeing a player like Buchanan as someone who can actually offer the team something, when its clear that hes not in the top rung of players any more.  Pity really, because he was my most influential player on the ground in the 2005 GF, particularly the last term.  Sorry Juddy.

The Lions appear to have the ability to bat deep in the midfield, and with a better run from injury from Drummond, they could get their defence nicely tuned.  The ruck division at least for this year is looking strong.   That leaves an absolute mess called the forwards division. Its so in need of improvement from the skipper Jonathan Brown its not funny.   JB at his best gets not just goals himself, but he wills other players into the game.   For Brisbane to become a realistic finals threat this year, they need JB at Premium level, and some young players under the Midprice level to step up their game.   You cant base finals on the efforts of McGrath and Banfield.   And for that reason, at least on my list analysis, Brisbane has the worst forward line in the competition.   Crisis creates opportunity for the buyer willing to take a big risk.

On the whole Brisbanes list ranks a score of 32, with only 17 depth players.   This places them 14th in quality of best 22, and 14th in terms of depth.  They need the young mids and forwards to come on in a hurry.

    2011 Supercoach Statistics:

    PPG Average: 1564 (Ranked 15)

    DEF Average: 553 (8) - 35%
    MID Average:  610 (8) - 39%
    FWD Average: 231 (17) - 15%
    RUC Average: 170 (3) -  11%

Brisbanes problem is forward of centre.  I mentioned this earlier, and its the way it is.  Brown steps up and reclaims his position in footballing folklore, and the Lions can certainly make the top 8.  Unfortunately hes been off the ground injured far too much to make a difference.   I also find that one bad line for the Lions means the overall ranking goes down the toilet.   That is the problem when you cannot put scoreboard pressure on your opponents in an age of forward presses.   Its no big statement to say that Brisbane could do with a mid-forward of the Beams-Sidebottom class.

    2012 Fixture Analysis:

Fixture Analysis has been completed on 2011 Finishing Position (GWS is ranked 18)

    Highlights:

    - Brisbane have a very run-of-the-mill batch of games
    - I take this to see that their players will probably hold their value without having big peaks or troughs.
    - The strategy of choice here would be to get keepers early on, hoping that the fairly soft start and finish will be enough to have them as Premium players.
    - Brisbane has the bye in round 11.   Means their backline better players, and their midfield premiums might be the players to get in after this completes.

Games have been grouped as the average finishing position of their opponents, sorted in a 5 match collection, apart from the first and last 4 games, which are listed to see which teams can really start and end the year with a bang.  Start represents the round number to begin the analysis, and stop means the round number to end.   If a team played GWS and Gold Coast, then their ranking for 2 games would be 17.5 rounded to 18.   If a team played Collingwood, Geelong, Carlton, Hawthorn and WCE in a run of 5 games, the ranking for these would be 3 (the average finishing position of last years top 5).   Anything close to 18 is good.  Anything close to 3 (or even 1 or 2 in the first 4 or last 4 rounds) is bad.

Purple: Less than 5 games to assess
    Yellow: Key trading period
    Green: Easy run of matches
    Red: Difficult run of matches
Orange: Medium difficulty run of matches

Brisbanes Top 5 Players for your Supercoach Team:

1 - Tom Rockliff (MID) - Hes a little beauty this one.   Walesy is continuing to regale us about his great finish to the season.  If he holds that sort of form, he moves into the Elite.

2 - Matthew Leuenberger (RUC) - People have been thinking of avoiding him due to a bit of an unsettled preseason.   Its a risk.  Though he has Hudson up there with him, he had Clark in previous years, and nothing has slowed his development.  Hes still a very good ruck project player, and must come under consideration.

3 - Jack Redden (MID) - Part of the "Triple R" brigade with Rich and Rockliff, and he just keeps getting better.   There are points on offer in the Lions midfield with Black taking a lesser role, and Leuenberger/Hudson providing a great hitout combination.

4 - Pearce Hanley (DEF) - Already Premium, this kid will stay there, as he continues to grow in his knowledge and experience of the game.   Hes much more likely to have a full year down there regardless of what happens to Drummond which makes him a more reliable option than Adcock.

5 - Elliot Yeo (MID) - One must consider this kid just because of a great NAB Cup.  Hes knocking on the door, but what must be noted is there are plenty of rivals for spots in the first choice Brisbane midfield, in Harwood, Polec and OBrien.   The points are on offer, and Brisbane do need improvement, and Im not sure they will see that from Sheldon and Polkinghorne types.  Depends how long Voss keeps his faith in these clydesdales.
