2012 List Analysis:
The Gold Coast Suns did well last season. Lets face it many thought they wouldnt win a game, when in fact they were able to almost send a traditional powerhouse in Port Adelaide to the wooden spoon. Only the Adelaide Oval comeback stole the Suns that very handy early pick. And they used it well, on the J BOMB who will be on our screens from next season.
So what do we look for from Gold Coast this season? Id say a year not unlike Brisbanes of last year. Lots of losses, with a bit more honour this season, and not many wins. And that means probably only their two elites in Bock and Ablett will remain so. Rischitelli might step up, but its a might considering hes still shouldering a big load in the middle.
When Danny Stanleys your best forward, you know youre in trouble, and thats why Bock has been sent up there. Its easier to make a defender from scratch (or draft a Warnock) than to have a top quality forward. This means Tippett is surely a huge target for the Suns when they get him for their 3rd rounder (or something similar) next season. Find another few talls from their ranks and they could climb to near the 8 in 2013. But yeah, nowhere near it in 2012.
Gold Coasts list rating is 30 and a depth of 17. This ranks their list at 17th best in the competition (no surprise), and the depth is 14th best. The battle for this year at Gold Coast is turning those lower-mids and mid-price players into upper-mids and premiums. Easier said than done, but a lot of the players on the Suns list are top quality stock of the draft table. They just need time and good development coaches.

2011 Supercoach Statistics:
PPG Average: 1455 (Ranked 17)
DEF Average: 460 (12) - 32%
MID Average: 561 (12) - 39%
FWD Average: 266 (15) - 18%
RUC Average: 168 (4) - 12%
Losers dont score, its a fact of life. And thats the case with Gold Coast and Supercoach in 2011. Hard to see it getting better in 2012, though the Fraser-Smith combination was the 4th best last year, and Smith will certainly improve, though maybe not on the scoreboard. Ablett will continue to ensure points are scored in the middle, maybe Bock will put a few more points for defence, but until the team solidifies, their forward division will remain atrocious.
2012 Fixture Analysis:
Fixture Analysis has been completed on 2011 Finishing Position (GWS is ranked 18)
Highlights:
- Gold Coast have an easy start. The question is whether they will be good enough to take advantage of it. I think not.
- Gold Coast have the bye in Round 13. It means if you want to upgrade into Bock, hed be probably one of your last defensive upgrades.
- My advice with Gold Coast is dont be scared to get their players early if they suit your team. By this I mean get Ablett and consider Smith.

Games have been grouped as the average finishing position of their opponents, sorted in a 5 match collection, apart from the first and last 4 games, which are listed to see which teams can really start and end the year with a bang. Start represents the round number to begin the analysis, and stop means the round number to end. If a team played GWS and Gold Coast, then their ranking for 2 games would be 17.5 rounded to 18. If a team played Collingwood, Geelong, Carlton, Hawthorn and WCE in a run of 5 games, the ranking for these would be 3 (the average finishing position of last years top 5). Anything close to 18 is good. Anything close to 3 (or even 1 or 2 in the first 4 or last 4 rounds) is bad.
Purple: Less than 5 games to assess
Yellow: Key trading period
Green: Easy run of matches
Red: Difficult run of matches
Orange: Medium difficulty run of matches
Gold Coasts Top 5 Players for your Supercoach Team:
1 - Gary Ablett Jnr (MID) - Lock him in Eddie, pay what you need to. He showed last year that he is classy even in a team thats poor, and that hes a natural born leader. After mid season he ratched up his game, and even though there was an occasional sub 50 score affected by injury in there, the risk in not having GAJ as your permacapt is bigger than just thinking you can get a nice easy upgrade into him this season.
2 - Zac Smith (RUC) - This kid is something special. I think he was more impressive than Dyson Heppell last year considering the role he had to play in a side that was getting spanked most weeks. As a starter, he could just do enough to improve the coin before getting the upgrade into a player like Cox after the bye. Hes worth considering at least, particularly as he started last year strong, then faded. I think this year could be a carbon copy as he matures physically.
3 - Karmichael Hunt (DEF) - Well Impromptu had him last season, hes moving into the midfield where he will get 10 tackles per game. I reckon hes value this year particularly when you consider hes a defender.
4 - Kyle Horsley (MID) - Yeah I spelled the Horse wrong in the grid up above, but the nickname suits him. If he gets upgraded and provides some grunt, he could be a useful selection.
5 - Daniel Gorringe (RUC) - Will be Smiths right hand man this year one would assume. Fraser needs to move forward, and this allows the two future twin towers to get good game time. The "Orange" might be a worthwhile candidate for teams that are looking for the 1-0-3 ruck setup, but want something with a tweak of the unusual.
