2012 List Analysis:
Melbourne is tough to rate. They have a new coach and a huge amount of players who under Bailey routinely under-performed.
Neeld wont settle for anything less than the best week-in, week-out. It might be a tough line to start with, but I can see it bearing fruit later in the year, when the draw really opens up for Melbourne.
As they move players from the UpperMid to Premium, thats where the team can move up the ladder. There are plenty of players who can step up there, but no one as yet as shown they are capable of the consistency required.
Melbournes list rating is 40 and they have a depth of 24. This places them 11th for their best 22, but 3rd in terms of depth. Therefore the key is either sifting out the ones at the bottom, or getting some massive list improvements happening. I can see the bonus for Melbourne is when the year gets longer, other teams will get hurt a lot more than they will. They should storm home.

2011 Supercoach Statistics:
PPG Average: 1625 (Ranked 10)
DEF Average: 355 (17) - 22%
MID Average: 557 (13) - 34%
FWD Average: 560 (2) - 34%
RUC Average: 153 (5) - 9%
For a team that appeared to try to rebound off the backline, their score down there was pretty terrible. This will need to improve for Melbourne to rise up the ladder. They have enough up forward to be dangerous if they stiffen their defence up. But the defence score is probably requiring Grimes to return and in his full pomp. Maybe Davey returning back for two or three seasons would also help, because looking at the defensive list, there are a few plodders in the lower mid area.
2012 Fixture Analysis:
Fixture Analysis has been completed on 2011 Finishing Position (GWS is ranked 18)
Highlights:
- Their start is pretty decent though, a challenging run leading up to the trade period, but then a great run home
- Melbournes bye is in Round 12. Neither here nor there.
- Melbourne the advice is to load up on their players in trade period. And probably start with none of them. Grimes on the run home looks good.

Games have been grouped as the average finishing position of their opponents, sorted in a 5 match collection, apart from the first and last 4 games, which are listed to see which teams can really start and end the year with a bang. Start represents the round number to begin the analysis, and stop means the round number to end. If a team played GWS and Gold Coast, then their ranking for 2 games would be 17.5 rounded to 18. If a team played Collingwood, Geelong, Carlton, Hawthorn and WCE in a run of 5 games, the ranking for these would be 3 (the average finishing position of last years top 5). Anything close to 18 is good. Anything close to 3 (or even 1 or 2 in the first 4 or last 4 rounds) is bad.
Purple: Less than 5 games to assess
Yellow: Key trading period
Green: Easy run of matches
Red: Difficult run of matches
Orange: Medium difficulty run of matches
Melbournes Top 5 Players for your Supercoach Team:
1 - James Magner (MID) - So hes injured? Who cares at 94k after about 5 rounds he will make a truckload. Lets hope people remove him after Round 1 teams are announced and he is missing.
2 - Matthew Bate (FWD) - Underused by Bailey, or misused. Neeld seems to put him on ball. If you like midpricers, hes pretty irresistible.
3 - Jack Grimes (DEF) - I think hes a great option for a first defensive upgrade. If he can get fit early, its an interesting one. Because a lot of people will still steer clear thanks to his appalling injury history.
4 - Colin Sylvia (FWD-MID) - There for the upgrade. Please dont whack anyone when you should be getting 150s.
5 - Thomas Couch (FWD-MID) - I love the old MF players, and if Couch gets an upgrade, hes a chance at getting game time.
