So, another round of the NAB has come and passed. Can I just preface this by saying, its great to see a full game of footy! That 20/20 stuff is alright as a sometimes thing, but it just seems to lack the intensity of a full 4 quarter battle.
Anyways, its a big post, so grab a coffee and enjoy.

Melbourne v Essendon
So, the weekend started off strongly on Thursday night with Melbourne taking on the Bombers. Call me biased if you will (ok- call me biased, Im passionate, its how I roll), but the new Bombers gameplan was very effective the other night. Defensively they were very sound and there frontal presure was brutal. They managed 5 of their 18 goals through caused turnovers in their forward 50. Not too shabby.
- Brent Stanton looked in fine form top scoring for the Bombers with 24 touches through the Nathan Jones tag.
- Monfries put in an excellent game, notching up 17 touches, a huge 8 tackles and a handy bag of 2.2.
- Paddy Ryder showed us just why he could be your #2 ruck picking up a health 10 touches, 9 hitouts and 3 goals, its just a shame he didnt get F/R eligibility- I reckon hes be a lock if he had!
- Leroy Jetta was electric, boy the kid has got a good handball on him. Jo has been telling me all summer that hes due for a breakout year, and who knows, maybe he is?
- Dyson Heppell put in an excellent effort in both the 1st and 3rd quarters and has definitely done enough to be selected in every team.
- Hibberd did a decent effort, he managed only 9 touches, but his defensive efforts were pretty good. Hopefully we get to see him for at least another week.
- Crameri presented well, though being a MID only, cant see him getting a guernsey.
- In the Demons camp, Jack Grimes did magnificenly getting the pill 25 times. If you can get over his injury history, lock him in and enjoy.
- Lynden Dunn did a good job up forward kicking 2.2, though even with dual positioning, and an awesome moustache, I dont see him stepping up into premium status.
- Colin Sylvia was very prolific early, however his 56% disposal efficiency might see him a better DreamTeam target than SC.
- Brad Green should some worrying signs up forward, as did Jack Watts both finding it difficult to get into the game. But hey, its still only early days.
- Strauss got the job on Monfries, and while he got 9 touches, hes gunna need to be better than that if he wants to walk up in round 1.
- Finally, the Jurrahcane- boy the kid is exciting. I could just love watching him run all day- so quick, so agile, particularly for someone of that height! He kicked 3.1 off 12 touches, though he did cop a wack to the gob from Williams at one stage.
Collingwood v Sydney
Friday night saw Collingwood take on the Swans. Collingwood dominated early, however, Sydney did a great job in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to get back into the match. Even got their noses in front, before Collingwood switched it up a little and took out the win by 14 points.
- Dane Swan has showed everybody just why he needs to be in every team. Picked up 24 touches and kicked a mighty 4 goals. Just lock him in now cause hes an absolute gun.
- Swans tattooed partner in crime, Beams put in a great game with 23 touches and 2 goals of his own, irrelevant but amusingly, at one point in the game, Beams and Swan combined to kick their 6 goals between them, all in a row.
- Daisy did a good job and if he were still a forward, would be a lock in my squad. Whether he can step up to a premium Mid though is a totally different question.
- Neon Leon played most of the game in the backline, taking the role of the designated kicker and managed to walk out with 15 touches.
- This left plenty of room up forward for Andrew Krakouer who himself collected 15 touches but also a goal. If he keeps this up for two more weeks, its gunna be touch to leave him out as hell be a walk-up start in a premiership team.
- Heath Shaw played a lot of the game up forward, though when the game was on the line, finished it up in defense. He got the bulk of his points while he was up back, so hopefully this forward roll doesnt make it past the pre-season.
- Over on Sydneys side of the fence, one Josh Kennedy absolutely dominated! 30 touches with 11 clearances he put in a spectacular effort for another week. If he keeps this up, he could be a mid pricer worth getting. (That said, Ive just noticed that hes not in TS! Gonna have to get him in there.)
- Gary Rohan I thought was very good. He played up forward for the first half, didnt get it at all in the first quarter, but a move to the middle in the third saw him get 14 touches.
- Malceski looked pretty good, getting free pretty often, amassing 19 touches and 7 marks.
- Kieren Jack spent the game tagging Swan and still managed to get 20 touches of his own- I made the call in the off-season that hell step up into a full mid premium this year, but hes going to need to do better than that if hes to get there.
- Worryingly, Adam Goodes spent the game playing deep up forward, though he did manage 14 touches and 3.2 while OKeefe was also up forward and kicked 2. Both were a little worrying though Im sure that its just a pre-season-up-forward thing.
- Meanwhile Rising star Daniel Hanneberry only managed 3 touches, though he was subbed of injured at half time.
St. Kilda v Geelong
Saturday night saw the the Saints completely decimate the Cats. That said though, Jimmy Bartel, Paul Chapman, Matthew Scarlett, Cameron Ling, Joel Corey, Harry Taylor and Cameron Mooney were all missing from a full strength cats lineup- so its not really fair to take a lot out of the encounter.
- McQualter got a career high 25 touches of the pill, which included 2 goals, but I wouldnt take too much from that.
- Gwilt also did nicely with 25 possesions, but this time, a lot of them were well into junk time.
- Montagna put in another nice pre-season effort with a solid 22 touches of the ball.
- Alistair Smith put in a decent showing with 13 touches and a mighty 10 tackles, but who knows how that will play through to the regular season.
- Hayes, Goddard and Dal Santo all put in good efforts with 60 touches between them.
- Gilbert raised some question marks playing up forward, though it was nice to see him passing to Roo.
- For the Cats, Mitch Duncan put in an excellent effort with 24 touches, though to know how thats going to work with the sheer number of Cats that out- but hey- its good to see him performing when given the opportunity!
- Stevie J played off the half back line and through the middle which adds credence to the call that hell be playing through the middle this year. Could be an excellent pick up if it werent for the round 6 conundrum.
- Simpkin put in a decent effort with 1.1 and 9 touches but again, who knows if it will last into the season, the same can be said about Christensen who got himself 13 touches.
West Coast v Gold Coast
The last official game for the NAB saw the Eagles see off the Suns and move into the next round.
- Cox absolutely ran riot against the young GC kids clearing 22 hitouts and picking up 16 touches. Certainly makes picking your ruck premiums tough with so many high end guys to chose from!
- Adam Selwood managed to pick up 27 touches while tagging Swallow, however its his mid-priced brother, Scott Selwood who put his hand up for selection with a 20 possesion performance. Boy I wish the fantasy gods didnt take away his Defencive eligibility, we how have been donning the TS colours for sure back there.
- Jack Darling impressed with 14 touches.
- Luke Shuey did very well getting 14 touches in the first half before being subbed off for Andrew Gaff, who went on to get 6 of his own.
- Im not going to dwell too long on the Eagles though because what we all wanted to see were the Gold Coast boys! Still didnt get to see Ablett in the Yellow and Red, though we did get to see the future star, David Swallow run around again. He struggled a little under the Selwood tag, but was freed up in the second half to finish with 17 touches. Cant see him getting tagged too closely through the season with Gaz back in the team, so lock him in boys and girls.
- Up forward, Brandon Matera had a good game with 14 touches and a goal- though a groin injury might have us all crossing our fingers and hoping hes fine. That said, Dion Prestia looked more than able to jump into the spot with 16 of his own touches.
- Coad managed to collect 13 touches while playing a role on Kennedy so he should still be on everyones watchlist.
- Tape was he most outstanding of the defenders though, with 20 touches and did a great job on both The Frenchman and Callum Wilson.
- The most worrying sign I saw though is that the Suns boys just werent getting enough of the ball, then onto the scoreboard and I have to wonder the effect, as it flows through to the Supercoach score, that it will have on their output through the season. Definitely something to think about.
Now, there were a number of other games that went on this weekend, but I didnt see them- so all youre gunna get is the footnotes that Ive managed to find on the net.
Bulldogs v Brisbane
First of all, the Bulldogs absolutely smashed the Lions by about 70 points. That said, Jonathan Brown, Simon Black and Luke Power all sat out the game.
- Wallis and Liberatore were both subbed on in the 3rd quarter and did a decent job of it.
- Veszpremi managed to get a pair of goals and did some good things.
- Easton Wood was pretty quiet. Higgins did a great job of it, put in a real classy performance.
- Jared Polec played the game as a mid but was very quiet. Actually, not many stars in a Brisbane performance that got smashed.
Richmond v Port
Richmond v Port saw the Tigers resting Jack Riewoldt, Brett Deledio, Chris Newman, Daniel Connors, Shane Tuck and David Astbury.
- Tyrone Vickery kick a bag of 5 and put his hand up for the #2 ruck spot at Richmond.
- Sounds like Houli had a good first hitout for the Tigers.
- Not a lot to be said for Port, Jasper Pittard did a bit- but not much more to write home about.
Carlton v GWS
Carlton rocked up to play the GWS and walked away with a 157 point win. What can you say- they were all over everything. Shame really because it would have been good to see the Blues defence in action with Dugain and Laidler on our watchlists.
- Marc Murphy was the best on ground.
- Judd collected 15 touches and two goals before being subbed off at 3 quarter time.
- Eddie Betts kicked 6 goals while Thorton got 5.
Hawthorn v North
Hawthorn took out a 29 point win against the Kangeroos, all the while they had the following out Luke Hodge, Brad Sewell, Xavier Ellis, Chance Bateman, Isaac Smith, Shane Savage and Paul Puopolo.
- Franklin shook off an early calf corking to kick 5.4 while Roughead managed 4.1.
- Rioli spent most of the time at half back, which will raise a few eyebrows in the fantasy commuity. Love to know what his numbers were like!
- Richardson was again very good.
- Atley put in a good performance and is looking good for a round one start.
Adelaide v Fremantle
Adelaide smashed the Dockers by 74 points, though the Dockers did sit out Sandilands.
- Rory Sloane was best afield.
- Andy Otten again put in an excellent performance. Lock him in guys.
- Chris Knights gave us all a bit of an injury scare, but apparently its all good.
- Mzungu and Viv Michie both put in a good showing.
Anyways, its been, well, a long post, but its also been a pretty good week of footy. Skills were still pretty rusty, but you do expect that at this time of year! So, what do you all think- Anything surprising? Anyone disappoint? Anyone moving into your squad, or out, based on this weekends performance? (Im sure Ill be making a couple of tweeks to my squad over the week - though as we always say around here, it doesnt count until the final week!)
