Part 3 in our ongoing series of ORFFL Preseason Previews. This week we take a look at the Glenrowan Gunslingers, the Tarwin Lower Pigs and the Purnululu Bungle Rangers. Three teams that fell well short of making the finals last year, but three teams that I believe are every chance to reverse their fortunes in 2013.

Is it fair to say that the wheels fell off last year? No, as there were murmurs going around the league that the vehicle they were driving didn't have wheels at all.

Far from it. This is one of the better young squads running around in the comp, and with BockBock (61.8/93.81) learning to fly again and expected improvement from their host of players under the age of 25, Glenrowan could find themselves jumping up the ladder in 2013.

As @JohnnyKashman pointed out in his article last week, SleavesBeams increased his avg. by 22 points last year to become one of the dominant players in the comp. Sure he's just a midfielder these days, but if you're scoring nigh on 123 points per game it doesn't really matter where you play.


<p style='margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;]In any case it's often said that when one door closes another opens, and the Gunslingers find themselves even-steven's with Abrtel (98.6) securing his long deserved F/M status.


<p style='margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;]Indeed Glenrowan's forward line retains it's potency going into year two, the aforementioned Bartel combining with Delicious (98.6), Dahlhaus (83.9) and Fasolo (75.5) to form one of the premier attacks in the ORFFL. With Bock as a D/F swingman and Matera (66.9) primed to make 3rd year points increase, the Gunslingers boast a number of options in the front half of the ground.


<p style='margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;]Defensively, I tip Glenrowan to move into the top tier of ORFFL clubs. With Hurn (91.4) a known premium, Bock, a formerly-known-as-premium and impressive youngsters Bugg (69.1) and Brodie Smith (64.9) still developing they have a substantial base to build on. Veteran Firrito (73.4 is quality back-up, and Melbourne duo Nicholson (72.2) and Tappy (52.1) not without a chance of making the grade if Melbourne can start managing to play decent football.

McKenna? What a guy.


<p style='margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;]This is particularly painful to Glenrowan as their midfield was on the weak side even with Iles contribution last year. The talent is definitely there, but for the Gunslingers to genuinely challenge the likes of Hannebery (82.2), Armitage (86) and Ziebell (81.1) need to become 90+ players at the very least. For Ziebell that means staying on the ground for a fair sight longer than 86 minutes per match.


<p style='margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;]Depth in this area another issue with M5 notionally being taken up by ShouldaBeenaSavage (55.7), the most vested player in the game. With Xavier Ellis (59) and Cale Morton (57.1) filling out that part of the roster at present, fair to say it's a problem.

If the hunter could manage a Greene like debut year in terms of ball getting and durability, Glenrowan's midfield depth for 2013 could be replenished in spectacular style. As much as I'd like to see it, I'm skeptical of Jaeger averaging more than 70-75 in his first year as he's never been a massive ball winner as a junior. In the future though, anything really possible.


<p style='margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;]Along with this, Glenrowan should really lobby hard to get Mike Pyke (76.7) out of Poowong. With SausagesMumford (91) a premium ruck, but a known health risk, they really do need a reliable understudy. With Witts yet to even debut and McKernan (57) very possibly on his last chance, the Gunslingers will be in quite the jam when the inevitable happens this year, and Mumford winds up in the hospital or the sin bin.

They should be good. But clearly it didn't all come together for the Gippy Pigs in 2012, winning just 6 out of 17 games and finishing the season in the 13th place.


<p style='margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;]It could be said that Riewoldt (95.9), ROK (103.8) Carrazzo (97.8) and Embley (53/90.5) are all in the twilight of their careers, and that the time for Tarwin Lower to challenge for a premiership is in the here and now. And yet even accounting for Carrazzo and Embley missing large portions of the season, 13th place is a long way away from bringing home the bacon.

Pendles (124.7) is the star player that everyone wants leading their midfield, handsomely supported by ROK, Carrazzo and a Mitch Wallis (87.3) who broke out massively in his 2nd year. That's a 400+ midfield on paper, the league standard for heavyweight.


<p style='margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;]If Bustanut (76.2) and iSmith (71.8) can get on up into that 80-85 bracket, and Embley can return to something approaching his unimpeded 2011 form, Tarwin Lower have 7 genuine quality options they can run through the middle and I/C.

However, going down the list finds Tarwin Lower relying on either veteran role-players Milne (69.4) and Edwards (68.7), or not quite ripe youngsters Karnezis (49) and GeneralPatton (45.3) to fill the breach when injury eventually sidelines someone.

Having to count on 2nd year players Buntine (49.5) and Docherty (DNP) for back up is risky game to play though.

Tough given they're all coming off pretty low bases, but stranger things have happened in fantasy football (remember that year Staker had before he did his knee?).

There is of course the option of trading one of those guys out to someone in need (rucks fetch a high price for those desperate), but I don't know how much we'll see clubs with two premium ruck men want to give up that advantage.

The PBR were pretty Minsoning terrible in 2012, an 6-11 record and just managing to haul themselves off the bottom of the ladder and into 15th place at the death.


<p style='margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica;]Why then is this pundit so bullish about Purnululu Bungle's prospects this year? Simply put, a squad as young as this one can not help but improve. Certainly it's a hard to see them having a year as bad as last's.
