We had a couple of nailbiters this round with no less than 4 matches going down to the wire and decided by less than 30 points. The story of the round though was one particular upset which I’ll go into below. Full match results and writeup after the break, now with POTY votes included!<!--more-->

WOY WOY WIZARDS 1264 Def TARWIN LOWER PIGS 1252
After writing about Woy Woy’s 8 week losing streak in the preview, it has now been broken! The closest match of the round was decided by only 12 points, and lifts the Wizards off the bottom of the ladder. Pearce (117) knocked up his first ton for the side, with usual suspects Lake (124), Black (117), Joey (114) and Jolly (109) pumping out triple figures. Let’s hope Blacky can string together more than a couple of games.
Not even the return of the great Scott Pendlebury (132) could save the Pigs from defeat. The Porpoise (128) dismantled the young Giants with his second century, while ROK (142) made a late charge on Sunday afternoon to try and get over the line, but with only 3 tons the consistency of the Wizards outfit got across the line.

QUEENSTOWN QUOLLS 1245 Def by POOWONG POTOROOS 1271
No sign of the late withdrawals this week with the Potoroos just sneaking across the line. There were many success stories at Poowong led by high draft picks Ablett (133) and SJ (148), but it was Clint Jones (129) that has been hailed the saviour this week after being picked up in the midseason draft. McKenzie (107) came in as a close second with his first ton for the year, along with Thompson (118), Sewell (104) and Murphy (100) also in the club. Jamar (12) a worry with yet another injury, and it didn’t look much better with Darling (41) iced up after the game, both subbed off.
The Quolls were brave in defeat and kept the match alive right to the depth, but just didn’t have the fire power to take it out. Watson (123) and Swan (110) continue their stellar year, not sure where the Quolls would be without them (the answer is winless). Westhoff (103) also chipped in, and a special mention must go to our Candian friend Mike Pyke – with the Quoll’s first 3 ruck options unavailable, the last pick in the midseason draft stepped up to the plate with a solid score. Hibberd (62) another soft tissue injury for the year is expected to miss games.

MILIKAPATI SNAKES 1383 Def BONNIE DOON BANDITS 1102
The Snakes top scored for the weekend and moved to the top of the ladder for the first time. Jack (158) and Kelly (148) continued their unbelievable recent form, the ever-consistent Lids (139) banged out another monster, and baby face Greene (127) has strung together 2 tons in a row. Pav (113), Birchall (106) and the other Jetta (103) all broke that same mark. Buckley (21) went off injured early allowing Clarke (25) to come on after starting the sub.
Not much to say about the Bandits, but it’s never a good sign when your second best player is Megahead (131). Mitchell (158) topped the sheets though, and the only other player to crack the ton was Daisy (101. Tippett & Griffiths both late withdrawals left the Bandits covering with Folau (36) and a donut, not sure who was better of the two.

JIMCUMBILLY JACKRABBITS 1254 Def MERTON MEERKATS 1053
The Jackrabbits took the chocolates in the furry little creature cup with a 200 point win over the Meerkats. It got off to an auspicious start with Droopy (168) amassing a huge score on Friday night despite only playing 3 quarters. The People’s Beard (133) was also super impressive, along with the underrated pair of Howlett (119) and Blair (102).
The Meerkats were always in trouble this round given their forward line, or lack thereof. Cotchin (141) did his best with his top score for the year after being injected into the midfield from the bench, while breakout stars Scooter (114), Zorko (110) and Grigg (104) did their thing. The story of the match though was the late omission of The Mullett – what were they thinking? (both Richmond and the Meerkats)

COULTA COULDABEENS 1116 Def by WARBURTON WANDERERS 1226
The Wanderers quite comfortably wandered across the line to secure a top 4 spot in a match that was never really under threat. Murphy (112) returned after an extended break, while unco Gilbert (108) got his first ton for the year. Griffen (118), Lewis (105) and Hale (101) rounded out the centuries for the Wanderers.
The Couldabeens still having problem at the selection table with 3 rucks playing, but all scoring relatively well. Priddis (128), Reilly (120), Enright (108), and Wright (106) raising the bat for the side. Cameron (17) is looking tied again and might be in line for a rest, while another forward line injury to Walker (4) isn’t a good sign.

MOUNT BUGGERY DISAPPOINTMENTS 1173 Def SARAH ISLAND SAVAGES 1091
BANG! I imagine that’s what a jar breaking would sound like. The Disappointments were anything but in this encounter as they struggled over the line in this low scoring affair. Ward (146) saved his best for the year, Roughead (113) another ton and Goose (105) getting on the scoreboard in his first match for the Disappointments.
What is there to say about the once mighty Savages? Once the fearless leader of the competition, they now find themselves 5th. If this were the ironic naming league, I would give them first prize. Coach Hornsy has already singled out Bundy (32) and Harry (37) as culprits, but at least had solid contributions from JPK (110), Mayne (110) and Ro-Bo-K-O (100). Happy birthday Hornsy, maybe someone will get you a new jar.

2 votes – Roughead (Disapointments)

HUMPTY DOO HAMMERHEADS 1143 Def GLENROWAN GUNSLINGERS 1124
Hammer time continues after the midseason break with their 3rd straight win, this time over the misfiring Gunslingers. It was called in the preview, but the Judd (159) and Wells (131) duo on Friday night proved the difference, even if Judd is a turkey for that chicken wing. Jacobs (138) is proving to be one of the picks of the draft, putting up elite ruck numbers. Hams a lame duck egg also.
A bit of a team selection issue down at Glenrowan after Matera (95) put in a game winning performance for naught as he wasn’t selected, while Savage and Iles didn’t even show up. Beams (137) was a highlight while Hannebery (119, 42 touches) and Rioli (105, 15 touches) showed the wonders of the Champion Data scoring system.

2 votes – Beams (Gunslingers)

POPANYINNING PYRITE 1271 Def TORRUMBARRY THUNDA 1252
The predicted match of the round turned out to be just that, with nothing in it at the finish. Riewoldt (138) kicked a bag, while Shuey wasn’t required in the midfield this week with Boyd (141), Hayes (127) and Spitta (109) putting on a master class.
The Thunda were brave without their leading forward, midfielder and defender but couldn’t quite steal the win. Bernie (152) had a game to celebrate and Higgins (112), Danger (110) and Kerr (105) kept it close, but it’s quite clear that Cloke (41) and Broughton (35) are to blame for this one.
