It's the middle of August and so ends another ORFFL regular season. It got a bit heated in the last week as we began to have that difficult conversation that every professional fantasy keeper league must have at some point in time. The talk of tanking.



The season is over for the majority of teams in the ORFFL, so now seems as good a time as any to have that discussion about what if any is to be done about this spectre. And I'll try and use far more moderate language and temperament than I have in the past couple of weeks.



The facts are that the drafts we have are an equalisation method; the worse your team is, the better picks you get. In theory if your team is poor, you'll have the opportunity to draft better players so your team isn't so bad in the future (relative to every other team).



This system of course is open to teams deliberately trying to lose in order to get better picks. See any sport with such a last to first draft, fantasy is no different. The issue with this is that if half the teams are trying to lose to finish further down the ladder and half the teams trying to do the opposite it can be argued that it's not a true competition as not everyone's trying to win (although theoretically if you kept drafting good players your team would get better, making it harder to keep losing, perhaps somewhat besides the point).



As to how best to stop it, I'm all for ideas. My 3 main ones are:



a) shame. Calling out teams that tank and punishing them with ego-deflating peer pressure and a loss of draft picks if caught.



Although this is pretty much what we have now and no one likes fingering other coaches, err, so to speak.



b) Some kind of lottery system so teams are not guaranteed P1 if they finish last and etc.



You can obviously still tank under this system, the result is less certain.



c) Accept that it's a part of any competition with a last to first draft and agree to not be really blatant about it as it's disrespectful to the appearance of the competition. In short be subtle, or don't do it.



The other major issue revolves around coaches not entering teams and getting a zero, which is effectively like losing a game whilst gaining a GWS like percentage in one hit. Which I think is a ripe opportunity if you really did want to tank blatantly.



My solution is similar to what Kel suggested in a past blog, which is if you don't enter a team for the week, you get the score from the team you entered the week before but you automatically lose the game.



I still think coaches should be encouraged to enter a line-up every week, as if you're not doing that you're not really playing the game and if you're not doing that, err, what are you doing here.

P.S When do we announce who we're playing in the finals, can anyone remember when we did it last year? I'm happy to do it now for what it's worth, but then I'm not fussy on who I play.
