As we turn into Round 6 of the ORFFL, let us reflect on the times we've had and what lays in store for the future. For many in the lower reaches the first five weeks have been sad ones, and the future is concerned with improvement and midseason draft picks. For those teams at the top, the past has been glorious, and midseason draft picks are an irrelevant sideshow to the main meal that is winning. And yet the present continues to be, well, present. The only true reality. Over the break, we preview it.

SARAH ISLAND SAVAGES(1430) 1062/10 VSTARWIN LOWER PIGS(1220) 823/11
Match of the round! Well sort of, it features the Greatest Team in ORFFL history going up against Tarwin Lower. And who doesn't like to see the best go out and strut their stuff? Okay, that was rhetoric. Seriously though, the TLP have some heavy hitters in Pendles (avg. 126), McIntosh (avg. 106), NRoo (avg. 101) and first year ruck Giles (avg. 98) that will seek to inflict the Savages with their first beating of the season. I wish them luck.

POOWONG POTOROOS(1249) 1093/13 VSJIMCUMBILLY JACKRABBITS(1217) 770/10
Nah, actual match of the round! 2nd placed Poowong go up against 6th placed Jimcumbilly in a topish of the table clash. With the Potoroos missing Gary for the second match in a row, the Jackrabbits would fancy their chances in knocking them off this week. In fact, they've said just as much. To achieve this aim they'll need Beamer (avg. 76) to stand up against Geelong at Cat Park. Which seems long odds. The odds of Hawkins (avg. 104) kicking a bag for the other team is, on the other hand, fairly high.

BONNIE DOON BANDITS(1098) 833/11 VSTORRUMBARRY THUNDA(1208) 865/11
I'm not entirely sure what to say about this match-up between Bonnie Doon and Torrumbarry this weekend. I say this because it would seem like every week I lament the Bandits crippling injury list, and yet they've managed two wins out of their first five games, which is better than some who have not faced nearly the same kind of handicap. Like Torrumbarry, who are also on two wins, yet have not faced nearly the close to the same kind of hurdles (although their injury toll is also starting to mount). With all this in mind, what's left is a battle of different strengths. The Thunda strong at the ends with Danger (avg. 103), Franklin (avg. 102), Heppell (avg. 96) and Cloke (avg. 95), and the Bandits strong in the middle with Mitchell (avg. 108), Griffen (avg. 107), Masten (avg. 106 and Brennan (avg. 106).

MERTON MEERKATS(1171) 118/2 VSCOULTA COULDABEENS(1201) 526/6
With Merton reeling from the mother of all beltings last weekend, Coulta will fancy their chances to kick an injured Meerkat while it's down. And yet life is full of irony; with the Couldabeens being the ones suffering a more grievous blow; losing JJK from their forward line for 3 months. With Richmond/Merton going up against Port Adelaide/Coulta this ORFFL match realistically hinges on the outcome of one AFL match. Should be fun!

WARBURTON WANDERERS(1262) 666(NUMBEROFTHEBEAST)/8 VSPOPANYINNING PYRITE(1181) 749/10
With Warburton suffering their first loss of 2012, Popanyinning will be no doubt smelling injured prey, ripe for the picking. With those garbled metaphors out of the way, the Pyrite will need some improved performances from some notable players to knock off the third placed Wanderers. Sam Reid (avg. 61), in particular, has been horrendous in the last couple of matches. LIFT SAM! LIFT!

PURNULULU BUNGLE RANGERS(1140) 935/13 VSGLENROWAN GUNSLINGERS(1155) 955/12
Battle of the cellar dwellers, as the 17th placed Purnululu Bungle face off against the 16th placed Glenrowan. The Gunslingers are slowly building on what was a diabolical opening, scoring 1280 last week. While the PBR have been trending the other way, scoring 1450 in their opening match and being scarcely able to replicate that since. They do however see defensive general Heath Shaw (avg. 88) return this week, while Glenrowan will be hoping that interchange king Jack Ziebell's (avg. 93) 50 points last week was an aberration, and not a sign of things to come.

HUMPTY DOO HAMMERHEADS(1149) 875/12 VS QUEENSTOWN QUOLLS(1188) 749/8
It's injured vs more injured over in Humpty Doo this weekend, with the Hammerheads matching up against the Quolls up north. HDH's decision to rest 3 votes for this match is baffling to say the least, especially against Queenstown, who have the third best midfield in the ORFFL. But what do I know? Plenty, it turns out. I expect Stiffy (avg. 68) to try and get the home team up, and the Hoff (avg. 90) and his magnificent beard to come to the rescue for the away side.

MILIKAPATI SNAKES(1254) 936/11WOY WOY WIZARDS(1259) 949/12
I think Woy Woy are the unluckiest team in the ORFFL, and yet sadly, I don't think they can count on their luck changing this round, going up against a very strong Milikapati side. Still missing the big man from the Sandilands (avg. 123) and with Hodge (avg. 62) looking underdone on last weeks showing, this team of veterans are going to find it tough playing away - virtual travel being what it is. The Snakes however, will be licking their reptilian lips at the chance of knocking off a depleted challenger; Lids (avg. 117) in snazzy form, and Birch (avg.96) returning at last this week (I hope).

MOUNT BUGGERY DISAPPOINTMENTS(1141) 825/9 VSMALLACOOTA MAGICIANS(1257) 924/11
Here we find the Chief coached MDB duking it out with Johnny Kash's Magicians. The coach of Mallacoota has been frankly miserable since losing franchise player Fyfe (avg. 82) to a shoulder injury for much of the season, and the Disappointments must surely fancy their chances against such a weakened foe over the next couple of days. A 180 from Stanton (avg. 128), and a 160 from Rocky (avg. 123), who's miraculously recovered from a mid-week hamstring injury, ought to be enough to do the job. Not that I'm barracking or anything.
