Round 10. Draft Rivalry Round I. Remembering the heady Days of January, when we had just begun this enterprise and everyone's team looked like winners, oh how foolish we all were! This round shall serve as a stark reminder to the follies of yesterday, as the foes of January meet each other on the fantasy football field of June. Read on good traveller, and we shall preview the long burning rivalries that are set to explode this week.

TARWIN LOWER PIGS (12th, 1228) 502/8 vs BONNIE DOON BANDITS (14th, 1142)
A classic encounter between the TLP and the BDB, both on three wins turning into the midseason break and only a couple of rungs on the ORFFL ladder separating the two clubs. Tarwin Lower have proved themselves to be a solid all-round team; 6th in Ruck and Forward divisions, 8th in defence and with the 3rd best IC bench so far. The addition of Where'sWallis to midfield group has steeled an area that was previously brittle for the Pigs.
For the away side, the Bandits, they'll be pleased with 1st round pick Cox, who has single-handedly (does he tap with both hands?) given Bonnie Doon the 3rd best Ruck division in the land. Daisy also looks like returning to his best form, helping out a midfield that has been 7th best so far. Not exactly news, but it's the Bandits defence that really needs help; dead last in the ORFFL averaging just 225 PPG. Geary out for the Pigs will at least make the Bandits task a little easier on the weekend.

POOWONG POTOROOS (2nd, 1269) 690/9 vs MERTON MEERKATS (6th, 1248) 892/11
An epic tussle between two of the ORFFL heavyweights with the Potoroos hosting the Meerkats just before the break. Everything spells a crackerjack match! If Merton get up, the talkback lines will be unbearable for the best part of a week. Likewise if they lose. I can't wait for either result, but I'm powerless to do otherwise.
Poowong lay claim to having the 2nd (434) best midfield in the ORFFL, yet Merton who have the 3rd (431) best concede just 3 points on average in this area to their more fancied opponent. Merton blow them away in the Ruck and the IC (both 2nd), yet find themselves lacking at the other ends of the ground. Areas in which the Potoroos (6th DEF, 8th FWD) are more than capable. If the Tiges get up tonight expect some nerves from the Poowong camp, particularly when Sherman and Hawkins are both missing this week from the aforementioned 8th best forward line.

WARBURTON WANDERERS (3rd, 1248) 1086/12 vs PURNULULU BUNGLE RANGERS (15th, 1163) 683/9
My have these two clubs taken divergent paths both in the draft room and on the field this year. Warburton went with a motley crew of stars, role-players and the kitchen sink, while the PBR went for straight up youth and have never looked back. It comes as no surprise that the Wanderers have faired better this year, but being a keeper league (the greatest keeper league in the land), the end is still to be written.
Warburton, sitting in 3rd, have got their wins on the back of a mighty forward line (3rd, 342), and an eveness across the other scoring areas of the ground (8th MID, 7th RUC, 6th IC). The Rangers on the other hand can console themselves with the league best Ruck division led by Ryder (112), and a pretty good defence (7th). They're struggling with consistency in other areas at this early stage of their existence, and with Shaw out of the defence this week, the odds are certainly against them.

QUEENSTOWN QUOLLS (8th, 1180) 780/9 vs MILIKAPATI SNAKES (4th, 1262) 762/10
Another case of relative youth versus relative experience, in this case, it's the youngsters who have the results on the board so far. That's the team from Milikapati BTW. 3rd for points scored and with the 2nd best defence (376) in the ORFFL, the Snakes are a fearsome combination. The loss of ruckman Smith this week will certainly take a bite out of their scoring potential this week, although they see Kelly and Jetta return.
Their opponents the Quolls meanwhile have line-up problems of their own; Petterd, Dixon and Grant all missing from a forward line that has been beset by such absences all year (14th, 293). Queenstown see Yarran return to their defence, while their midfield (6th, 412) must survive without Swan for another week.

GLENROWAN GUNSLINGERS (17th, 1136) 578/8 vs WOY WOY WIZARDS (16th, 1206) 696/7
I'm not sure quite how to encapsulate this match, so I'll go with the Bugg/Jetta/McQualter Cup. The loser-nae-winner is sure to get one of these fine free agents (unless they trade their picks, unlikely as it may seem). Amongst the debris that aptly describes these two foes season's to date, there are some bright sparks yet to be put out.
Glenrowan have the 6th best forward line in the comp, while The Double Woy have the 5th best ruck and are amazingly still 9th in PPG despite their lowly ladder position. Some feat. At the selection table the Wizards say cheery bye to OldManBlack yet welcome back OldManFletcher. The Gunslingers see big Mummy return after a giant layoff, and still have the option of picking Brodie Smith as opposed to an OOP player in defence.

TORRUMBARRY THUNDA (9th, 1204) 1103/12 vs MOUNT BUGGERY DISAPPOINTMENTS (10th, 1215) 1060/12
Two of the real character coaches square off in this ORFFL ledger; Walesy, a prince among men, and SKT, a rascal amongst STK fans. I love them both equally. First the Disappointments, who have been anything but in recent weeks. While still having to carry a beleaguered defence (16th, 262), Mount Buggery have turned it up in the middle (4th, 421) and up forward (2nd, 356). With Goldy getting back to his best (avg. 112 over the last 3) in HMAC's absence, their ruck division is no longer the liability it once was (and that 1st round pick not so silly after all).
The Thunda from up yonder made tremendous noise preseason with regard to their quality forward of centre. They had big names. A lot of 'em. Yet it's their defence that's really lit up the ORFFL skies; 3rd best with an impressive average of 355 points per game. Which is just as well as their midfield (16th, 336) has been diabolical. More than some chance though in what should be a heated affair, the Disappointments losing Longer and Butler this week to injury.

SARAH ISLAND SAVAGES (1st, 1395) 928/11 vs COULTA COULDABEENS (7th, 1235) 1029/12
Been looking forward to this one for a few months, and if I may, I dare say the great Bear has been too. Coulta were impressive in draft month; grabbing a swag of smokies in the latter rounds (no, I'm not going to name them as it cuts too deep). On the field this year they've been somewhat middling; a defence (4th, 330) that's rock solid, but a ruck division that's been putrid (18th, 64). Oh, what could've been.
The Savages on the other hand have been awesome everywhere. 1st for total points, defence (376) and IC (180), 4th in the Ruck (101) and up forward (332) and 5th in the midfield. That being written, Sarah Island go into this weekend's match without Bundy and Waite for the 3rd week in a row, so the Couldabeens are not without a chance. I wouldn't bet on it though.

POPANYINNING PYRITE (11th, 1198) 784/9 vs JIMCUMBILLY JACKRABBITS (13th, 1183) 763/10
I'll level with you ORFFL folks here, I'm writing this one post-Friday night, and I've just seen JROO kick 8. Which means it's going to be that little bit tougher for Jimcumbilly up against Popanyinning this round. The Pyrite's forward line which has been pretty ordinary so far this year, just received a major boost. Ordinarily it's their DOMINANT midfield (1st, 450) that gets them over the line, but with Shuey out they may have to take a back seat to those up forward.
Jimcumbilly eagerly welcome back ThePeople'sBeard into their ruck, along with Sylvia and Batchelor. Their forward line (5th, 331) has looked solid all season, and its depth has made up a fair portion of its IC department (5th, 150). The concern for the Jackrabbits is in defence (12th, 262), and wherever they decide to play Beamer this week. Cos he's been shithouse all year.

MALLACOOTA MAGICIANS (6th, 1237) 700/9 vs HUMPTY DOO HAMMERHEADS (18th, 1115) 684/9
I had high hopes for this game from the outset of the season, but those hopes have largely evaporated come Round X. Lucas' Hammerheads are sitting dead last, struggling to get 15 on the park, nevermind what position those 15 are meant to be in. With Henderson and McKay missing for Humpty Doo this weekend, that is going to be a tough ask. Bring on the break, I hear them say.
Over at Mallacoota, they could well be saying the same. Missing first choice ruck McEvoy for a lengthy period of time, the Magicians have struggled in recent times. Still, with a solid defence (5th, 323), a spanking forward line (1st, 356), and a midfield that showed its potential last week, the Magicians could yet challenge for the flag. Provided nothing else goes wrong.
