Hadnt written anything for while so thought it was time I started to contribute to site again!
In Supercoach your pre-season selections or non selections can really make or break your entire season. If you nail the right breakout player it can save you a couple trades and gain you those valuable points, and on the other side if they fail to deliver it not only costs you lost points if you hold onto them for too long it hurts your bank balance as they lose all value.
What I thought what I’d do is look back at a few of the mid priced fallen premiums that we talked about during preseason. These were guys that for various reasons (well the 3 Im looking at cos of injury) dropped their output from previous years, meaning they had potential for some great points per dollar over the more expensive guys.
Ive decided to look at Kieran Jack vs Lenny Hayes vs Michael Barlow who were all at or below $450K at start of season, but feel free to post in comments the decisions you regret or are loving making. Everyone has a few they regret not taking punt on.

KIERAN JACK
SEASON AVE: 111
FIRST 7 GAMES: 90
LAST 6 GAMES AVE: 135
Kieran Jack was one of those unique picks a few people had on their radar throughout the pre-season due to being under-priced thanks to injury riddled 2011. In 2010 Jack averaged 100 and 2011 saw it drop to 80. Throughout 2010 he showed signs that he can score large on a consistent basis. He started 2012 at lowly $428K, but was overshadowed by hype around Lenny Hayes & Michael Barlow. If you started with him you’d be pretty happy, only 3 games under 89 points (47, 76, 77) and 8 games over 114 points.
LENNY HAYES
SEASON AVE: 105
FIRST 7 GAMES: 108
LAST 6 GAMES: 101.5
Lenny Hayes was probably the most talked about discounted player throughout pre-season, but the major concern was how he would return from his 2nd serious knee injury at ripe old age of 32. Needless to say it has been one of the most remarkable comebacks. He hasnt put foot wrong all season but he hasn’t reached the heights to make him a keeper in Supercoach. He has been incredibly consistent, not having 1 single score under 80. He has also topped the ton on 7 occasions. He started the season on fire with 5 of his 7 tons coming in opening 7 rounds. He has shown signs of fatigue, but bounced back this week with monster 143. Probably can’t expect much more then what he has so far for rest of season.
MICHAEL BARLOW
SEASON AVE: 92
FIRST 7 GAMES: 87
LAST 6 GAMES: 98.5
It’s probably fair to assume if you started the year with Barlow you’d be incredibly disappointed in his return. Has cracked the ton on 5 occassions but has 4 scores under 80. Only 1 score over 110 (117) isn’t exactly what you would have been hoping for.
VERDICT
I would have to say that those that took the punt on Kieran Jack would have won this contest as he looks like being a keeper for entire year and at present is outscoring the midfield superstars of Dane Swan (last 6 of 130), Gary Ablett (last 6 of 125) and Jobe Watson (last 6 of 128). Those that went Lenny Hayes would be pretty happy as he was good early and could make a handy F7 or upgrade to one the ultra-premiums.
For me, I had Jack in my team the entire pre-season and took him out at last minute for some unknown reason! Its little early but make sure you write Jack & Barlows names down on your notebook for next season. With Jacks slowish start means he might be little cheaper then output suggests, same as Barlow. Full year under his belt do him world of good.
So which players did you have in your pre-season side but didnt have guts to select. This is your opportunity to vent your frustration or even brag that you nailed it!
