G'day All, With the new Rookie Tax this season, thought it was worth while to get a handle on the rookies out there! From all accounts, there seems to be a couple that are instant lock-in's, including: - Jack Martin (Mid - $222,300) - Jesse Hogan (Fwd - $217,300) - Luke McDonald (Def/Mid - $182,300) So who are the others, what's their JS and what's the latest news on their pre-season? Are there any smokies out their (and why?).
I'm not so sure they are all instant lock ins. Martin does look like JOM mark II but is he worth the premium price? Young KP forwards like Hogan will take a little while, a la Cameron, Patton and Daniher. I'll be steering clear early days. Luke Mc Donald does look the goods so far. NAB will tell. I think C Beams, Matty Crouch (with Van Berlo now out) and Kersten (with no Pods) are more of 'locks' if you can use that word at this time of year.
Agree on Hogan - I wouldn't call him a lock. McDonald and Martin seem very likely. The other that seems very likely is Aish.
Mmmmm just have to ensure Aish and Martin will be worth the high starting price. Will have to have blinder NABs to get a gig. I like my rookies cheap, like the budgie! However there is a lot of talk that Martin is better than JoM was at the same age.
Martin and O'meara are 2 entirely different players, with entirely different body shapes, doing 2 entirely different jobs. I don't think they should be compared. Martin, in my opinion, will be a gun, but I'm just not certain he'll have the same productive year that JOM had in 2013. Nor will he play as many games and at $222K that's too big a risk for me to take. But being a Suns member, I would gladly like to be proved wrong.
From what I saw Monday night, I'd agree with you choppers. X Ellis is a lock for me at the moment, rookie-wise. Viv Michie, Polec, C Beams and M Crouch all moving towards lock territory as well. And after thinking we had plenty of rookie forward options, the prospective list is getting smaller thanks to injuries to Taylor, Kersten, Clark, and Broomhead....
I have X Ellis locked in as well and if Matty Crouch is named in the Crow's 22, then he's locked in as my M9.

As with most other years, the majority of viable rookie prospects seem to be in the midfield (i.e Aish, Polec, Dunstan, Sheed, Ellis, Morabito (probs downgrade), Michie, Crouch etc.) Im tempted to stack my midfield with rookies but as we all know thats where the majority of our big scores come from. its so frustrating that, in the forward line in particular, apart from Rohan and Kennedy Harris there dont seem any rookies jumping out. Impey is a possibility but would likely get the vest if he plays seniors, same with Garlett.
If Kersten gets an extended run on Friday with the Cats, he could be the Vardy replacement. Suspect it will be between him and Walker. I'm not usually very keen on KPF youngsters, but the FWD rookies this year are a bit thin on the ground so he might be last man standing.

There will always be the one crazy bugger who says 'I'll have an all rookie midfield' which never works out I think the key with rookies is that they play games and get game time. No use having a Tom Mitchell sitting on the bench for the first few rounds when he could be a downgrade instead of a starting player. I generally look at the teams and am wary of picking players listed on the interchange (can't explain it, just a gut feel interchange listed players are bad news) and go about picking rookies that have been mentioned around the traps by those who are close to the teams (coach, other players). In my opinion, sometimes the coaches give the best indication of game time for a certain player. I think it is important also to leave a budget this year for the rookie premium. These players are nearly guaranteed to get game time and potentially score much higher than those who are 70k cheaper. Game time is the key for me when selecting rookies
Shane Kersten was injured (source: http://www.krockfootball.com.au/setback-for-young-forward/) but seems like it was just a sprain. If he is named, he is in for mine. Anyone have any mail on Lewis Taylor? I heard he was injured but can't find anything on it.
Nick.....has had an interrupted pre season but just started to train fully again this week. I'd say he fights for a spot 2-4 weeks into the season at the earliest, so doesn't help our initial rook fwd problems. Kersten falls into the same boat I think, sadly.
Hoping for Kersten to get up, I like him at F7/F8, especially with Vardy out and Pods gone. Midfield rookies are looking deep this year which is great. Here's my shortlist (pure mids only) in rough order of preference Polec Tyson Michie X Ellis Dunstan Cunningham M Crouch C Beams Aish Others that looked ok during the NAB (or didn't play but we know they will) but probably won't get a run Round 1, and will hopefully be trade down targets: Derrick Wanganeen, Garlett, Morabito, Hallahan, Templeton, Jong, Martin Any more to add? What's your preference?
Exciting youngster Jay Kennedy-Harris will also play against the Hawks. Demons co-captain Nathan Jones said Kennedy-Harris - who booted three goals in the club's opening NAB Challenge game against Richmond - was firming for round one against the Saints. 'I reckon he's a big chance. I've been pretty excited by his pre-season and he had a pretty game in the NAB Challenge,' Jones told AFL.com.au. I certainly hope you're right, Nathan....
JKH named for NAB 3 so looking good I'll add Dylan Buckley to the list after being named for his 3rd NAB game. $135k midfielder could be a good bench option
