They say that a week is a long time to not use cliches, and for what- the third or fourth week running, Im gunna say it again, maybe mix in another one. A week is a long week in football, which is a funny old game. Who would have thought that after last weeks performance, Hawthorn would be able to knock off the Blues, who in the last three weeks have knocked off both Geelong and the Saints. That said though, the Saints have been in some ugly form of late, although they did put in a pair of great half to knock off the Eagles. speaking of everyone knocking someone down though, Brisbane are looking in some serious trouble. 5 losses in a row, topped off with this weeks loss to the Adelaide Crows. Worrying signs not just for them, but for us Brown owners since surely they have to give him a rest soon after another lackluster performance.
Well, the week started with a clash of the titans with Collingwood taking on Geelong. And as with every other week, started with rumours of Ablett missing. But miss he didnt, and 29 touches plus a goal for 109 points later- along with a 114 from Bartel and Chapman saw the cats run out as 26 point winners. Beams kicked 4 goals for the pies, and was joined at the top of the pies table with such staples as Swan, Didak, Pendlebury and Thomas. Podsiadly made a welcome return scoring 83 points, despite only kicking a single goal. At the other end of the table, Luke Ball managed to turn 27 touches into 58 SuperCoach points. Neon Leon put in another terrible effort falling well below $400k, in fact hes tracking downwards towards $350k- ugly stuff from this former All Australian. I think if he can find his form from that year, the Pies will be that much closer to a Grand Final. Fingers are crossed that that doesnt happen.
Next up saw the Doggies take another step towards the top 4 with a big win over the Roos. Now, I got told last week that its obvious that I hate the Kangers. I just want to put it on the record that I dont hate them, but its fairly tough to talk about them when not many of their players a SuperCoach relevant- but Ill try. Swallow top scored for the Roos with a 104 knocking up his 4th ton in as many weeks. Ziebell scored a 71 for those coaches who held onto him, while Cunningham continues to be a nice slow burner who should see out the year. Harvey dissapointed again a 53 and will more than likely keep going downwards. But the winning team was the dogs and their only downside was Barry Hall. Scored a 52, But theres going to be a lot of talk this week about his headlock on Thompson. It looks like his potential 2 week suspension will be raised through be 96 carryover points, and a 50% loading, up to a 5 week suspension- Which when you dont consider the points and loading seems very excessive for what he did. Ive banged on enough about this game but cant finish the review without mantioning the 170s scored by Lake and Cooney. Including a career high 41 possessions for Lake. J. Grant continues to be one of the best cashcows of the year with 99 points.
Fremantle pulled away from Sydney in the second quarter and simply never looked like giving up their lead. Pavlich led the way for the Dockers, kicking 3.4 and netting 123 points. The three big rookies for the game- Rohan, Barlow and Fyfe all broke the ton beautifully while Playfair scored 94 points. Sandilands put in his first sub-100 score for the year, though possibly his scores were effected by big Kep Bradley scoring a big 112. A couple of big injuries to some key swans including Bradshaw and Kennelly looking to spend an extended period on the sidelines, the latter picking up 0 stats and 2 SuperCoach points. Hill has burnt his coaches with a 17 and will be in freefall for the next few weeks.
Dreamtime saw the Bombers dominate the Tigers. Is is just me, but whenever I read Dreamtime, I always think Dreamteam? Anyways, David Hille top scored with 152 points, taking home the TV and marking a magnificent return from him knee injury. His other Ruck foil, Ryder scored 112. Leroy Jetta put in a career best performance with 127 points, while Howlett scored a fantastic 121 for all those coaches that are holding him. Most of the top of the table were Bombers, but the one outstanding Richmond performace was Jack Riewoldt who once again tore Pears a new one, kicking 6 goals and netting 123 points. The bombers at the other end of the table was Stanton putting in a second poor effort in a row. Looks like a fantastic M6 upgrade in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile Gumbleton looks to have peaked with a fairly poor return of 31 while Mitch Farmer scored an even worse 24- Though hell stay in my squad because of him MPP abilities.
Next we headed to the hot regions of the sunny sunny Northern Territory to see Melbourne take on the Power, and what a game it was. Melbourne were a mile in front and looked to be running it out easily, but a late charge by Port saw Melbourne get up by a single point. Continuing the round of rookies saw J. Trengove top score with 119 points, while the other J. Trengove scored a solid 76. The other player on 76 was crowd favorite Jack Watts who looks to be a fantastic downgrade option. Hitchcock impressed with a 99 and might be a decent cashcow yet while Sylvia had a welcome return to form with an 84. Down the other end of the spectrum, Top Scullys ton drops out of his rolling average and a 39 just isnt enough to keep him in the squad- which means its SLAUGHTERTIME~
Sunday saw the upsets. Firstly Adelaide knocked off the Lions by two straight goals, getting over the line in a tight game. Douglas top scored for the Crows with 146 points, while McGrath and Rich got the next highest scores for the Lions. Banfield, hit his 107 BreakEven with a 116, officially putting the butchers knife back into the rack for the next two weeks. Fevolas 5 goals scored the best 66 Ive seen since, well, Balls 27 touch 58. Maguire put in his first bad score for a while with a 57 while J. Brown scored 38 points and looks like hell be sub-400k in a weeks time.
The other big upset for the round saw Hawthorn absolutely dominate the Blues by 50 points. I said two weeks ago that you cant count the Hawks out yet- not with their ins, and boy did they prove me right. That said though, a few key innjuries to the blues saw their bench decimated, allowing the Hawks to run over them with their record high 155 rotations. Talk about rubbing salt in the Blues wounds! Luke Hodge top scored for the Hawks with 136 points while Franklin kicked 5.4 and got 133 points.
Westcoast at one stage was up 48 to 31 points in the third quarter, but fell apart in the third and wound up losing 56 to 91. Lenny Hayes top scored with 167 while Goddard came in just behind him with 157 points. Adam Selwood got the third highest score with a 138. Other decent performances were put in by Dal Santo, Priddis, McKinley, Cox and Fisher. Hurn disappointed with 68 points, Naitanui got 66 while Waters got 60. Meanwhile Le Cras put in a terrible 44 points.
The highest score for the round was a paultry 2535 with the Sideways cup so its not suprising that the sideways cup wasnt bothered.
The TS Leagues are currently sitting in 16th, 129th. Meanwhile the TS pine warmers have moved up to 19th... youre gunna be our highest ranked league soon, shoulda ponied up a pineapple.
Tipping was a shocking week this week, with only 10 people scoring 6 or more. The highest scorer got 7 though which was pretty damn good!
We got our new chat feature up on the live scores page this week. What did you all think? Did we like the format? Ill be looking to set up a seperate chat of each individual game, but it looked like it went all good as a communal chat. What do you all think?
Also, theres some sad news this week, I got knocked out of the DreamTeam eliminator this week - So, howd you all do this week?
Round 9 review.
