It was a big week in the EPL with the two Manchester clubs gaining valuable wins after coming from behind along with a couple of surprise results. Join me over the break for a full round up...<!--more-->
Villa v Man Utd 2-3
Hernandez was the hero with two goals and an assist (Vlaar OG) after coming off the bench at HT.
I needed Utd to win this one to win some cash for the TooSerious Punt Club so it was probably inevitable then that they should go two goals down. Weimann scoring both of them, DDG prevented his hat-trick with an outstanding save.
RVP and Scholes had the assists. Utd weren’t great and RVP was pretty much anonymous until the 70min mark when he twice hit the bar.
Smalling came in for the injured Evans and looked very rusty. Nani missed through injury while Rooney came off with a foot injury.
Apart from Weimann, Bannan, Ireland and Benteke were impressive for Villa.
Man City v Spurs 2-1
A familiar tale here as Dzeko came off the bench to notch a late winner. Aguero also scored for the citizens. Kolarov, Maicon (sub) and Silva (one assist) were all back from injury. City are unbeaten in 35 home games.
Caulker scored for Spurs from a Huddlestone freekick. Bale was quiet while Defoe was dropped for Adebayor. Naughton, Siguardsson and Lloris remain on the periphery.
Newcastle v West Ham 0-1
In hindsight there could only have been one result as Allardyce, Carroll and Nolan headed back to the North East. Nolan with a MOTM display as well as the winner. It was a deserved win too. McCartney (replaced by the returning Demel), Jarvis and Benayoun all came off injured.
Ba started for the disappointing Geordies while Cisse’s poor showing saw him hooked at HT. His replacemenet Shola Ameobi wasn’t much better. Gutierrez came off injured while Colocinni was missing through suspension. Newcastle are at home to Swansea next week.
Chelsea v Liverpool 1-1
Reina and Skertel were missing as Liverpool played five across the back. Carragher came in and got the assist for Suarez’s equaliser. A good result for Liverpool but apart from Suarez, it’s slim pickings fantasy wise.
Terry was stretchered off with a serious looking injury and could be out for a while, Cahill replaced him as Luiz was missing from the matchday squad. Azpilicueta played from the start as did Coles replacement Bertrand. Apart from that the Chelsea team had a familiar look with Lampard still missing with injury. Oscar continues to save his goals for Europe and was replaced by Moses on 77mins. Mata with the assist for Terry’s goal.
Reading v Norwich 0-0
Not much of a game here, but there were a couple of surprises. Kebe, Pogrebnyak and Le Fondre all started on the bench!
Whittaker started for Norwich after his injury woes. Holt had a couple of chances before being replaced late on.
Reading are still looking for their first win (they’ve drawn 6 from 10) but they achieved their first clean sheet, while Norwich have kept three clean sheets in their last four.
Southampton v Swansea 1-1
Dyer replaced Routledge after 56mins and scored the equaliser against his old club. That was Swansea’s first away goal since they hammered five past QPR on the opening day. Michu continues as the striker while Tremmel continues to cover for the injured Vorm.
Gazzaniga, Ramirez and Puncheon all started for Soton as Fox, Davis and Rodriguez all sat on the bench. Lambert was the provider for Scheiderlin’s goal. Saints move off the bottom.
Stoke v QPR 1-0
Despite a talented squad, QPR again failed to pick up any points and are now rooted to the bottom. Zamora, Mackie and SWP were all on the bench, while Ferdinand was recalled to cover the suspended M’Bia. Taarabt was close to scoring on a number of occasions.
Etherington got a rare start ahead of Kightly who was benched. Adam scored his first league goal for Stoke with Walters the provider. It was only a second league win for Stoke but those clean sheets keep coming. Begovic v Jaaskelainen at Upton Park next week.
Wigan v WBA 1-2
A good performance from The Baggies that earned them 3pts against an inconsistent Wigan side. James Morrison was again on the scoresheet netting from a Brunt cross. A Caldwell OG was the other goal.
Steve Clark continues to rotate heavily as Lukaku and Long started, with Gera, Dorrans and Odemwingie on the bench.
Kone scored again for Wigan with Beausejour providing the cross. Watson continues to get a run while McArthur is still missing through injury.
Everton v Sunderland 2-1
Fellaini continues to mock me by banging in the goals and notching the assists since I got rid of him for Bale. It was almost worth it this week though as his sublime backheel set up Jelavic’s goal, nutmegged O’Shea and tied him up in knots all in one fell swoop. Gold!! Fellaini now has six goals for the season.
Mirallas came off with an injured hamstring while his replacement Naismith grabbed an assist.
Adam Johnson became only the second Sunderland player to score this season with Gardner assisting. Sess and Fletcher both had chances to score. The Black Cats’ – who were missing Bardsley – wretched run continues.
Arsenal v Fulham
Walcott had a rare start & contributed both assists for Girouds goals while Arteta assisted Podolskis goal. That was the highlight for Arteta as he went on to concede a pen as well as miss a pen with the last kick of the game, Schwarzer saving.
Coquelin had a rare start with Wishere suspended. Vermaelen again played at left back. Cazorla had a quiet game by his standards.
Berbatov was the games outstanding performer with 2goals and one assist(for substitute Kacaniklic). Ruiz and Kacaniklic with Berbas assists. Duff only played the last 5mins.
I had a good week with 70pts(avg =41) taking me from 145k overall to 61k overall, let us know how you all went.
