Man City v Newcastle
The only two unbeaten teams left in the league faced off this weekend. The game was only going to go one way according to the bookies though, who had Newcastle at a whopping $9.50. As per usual they got it right.
Mancini surprised with his line-up, with both Nasri and Aguero starting despite being under an injury cloud. Balotelli also started. Silva and Dzeko dropped to the bench. Ben Arfa started at the ground where he picked up his horrendous injury last year at the hands of De Jong who had a rare start in place of Barry. Cabaye recovered from injury to take his place in the Newcastle midfield.
Newcastle had a couple of chances in a first half dominated by City. Things went awry for them and Ryan Taylor in particular towards the end of the half though as he needlessly handled to let Balotelli score from the spot. Two minutes later he got the ball stuck under his feet as Aguero tried to feed the ball to Richards. With Richards taking advantage 2-0 half-time.<!--more-->
After Ben Arfas year and where the game was being played, I was willing his shot in at the 60 minute mark, unfortunately for him and Newcastle it hit the post. Nice build-up play from Balotellis replacement Silva led to Richards being brought down in the box after 71 minutes and after some discussion it was up to Aguero to kill the game stone-dead. Gosling scored Newcastles consolation in the last minute. Thats 42 goals in 12 games for City, the most for a top-flight club at this stage of the season for 48 years. Aguero has now scored 10 with four assists.
Norwich v Arsenal
The story of this game was about one man again. RVP, on a sensational run scored two more goals to give Arsenal a comeback win. Morison gave Norwich the lead after some more dithering from Mertesacker. Walcott and Song supplied the assists for RVPs brace. Thats ten wins in 12 games for Arsenal. RVP has scored or assisted 38 of Arsenals 58 league goals in 2011. A special mention for Dutch coach Bert Van Marwijk who rested RVP for Hollands "friendly" v Germany.
Sunderland v Fulham
Clean sheets all round here including one for John OShea who was back from injury. Riise missed out though as his wife gave birth and Larsson was suspended for Sunderland. Richardson, Dempsey and Sessegnon had the best chances in a pretty uneventful game. 0-0
Stoke v QPR
Begovic was dropped for Sorenson, presumably after some recent clangers and Shawcross came back in after injury. Taarabt couldnt make the match-day squad. Beanpole Peter Crouch assisted two, one apiece for Walters and Shawcross, but its in defence that theyre really struggling which is unlike them.
Helguson with two and a goal for Luke Young gave QPR a welcome 3-2 victory away from home. Stoke are really struggling with loss of form at the moment and theyll need to pick up to avoid getting dragged into a relegation dog-fight.
West Brom v Bolton
Shane Long made a welcome early return to the WBA line-up after four weeks out injured. He managed to score the winner from a Shorey assist. Thomas gave WBA an early lead before Klasnic equalised with a penalty. Bolton remain in the bottom three.
Swansea v Man United
Allen started on the bench because he was under an injury cloud which left room for Sinclair to come back into the side. Young also started on the bench after his injury troubles. Giggs was deemed fit enough for a starting spot alongside Carrick in midfield and was the instigator for Uniteds goal by robbing the brilliantly named Angel Rangel and setting up Hernandez. Nani started, while there was no sign of Anderson. That was only the second goal conceded by Swansea at The Liberty Stadium this season.
United are far from the free-scoring outfit we saw at the start of the season, but theyve still won their last three games. All of them 1-0.
Wigan v Blackburn
This game was a real humdinger that had everything. Yakubu scored in the first minute and also with a penalty in the last minute. Caldwell, Gomez and Crusat scored Wigans goals. While Hoilett, one of Blackburns best players this season, scored one also. Rodallega was sub but came on to assist Crusats goal. Moses missed two sitters that suggest he used up his goal quota in pre-season friendlies. Blackburn goalie Paul Robinson earned his teams penalty when he went up for a last minute corner and received a boot to the head, after getting treatment Yakubus penalty hit the back of the net in the 99th minute. Rodallega has yet to score this season. David Dunn will serve a suspension after getting red-carded
Chelsea v Liverpool
Bosingwa was dropped again for this one with David Luiz coming in at CB. Dalglish still seems reluctant to play Carroll in the big games, while Maxi made his first start of the season. Kuyt and Bellamy both started. Maxi justified his selection by scoring after the impressive Adam had robbed Mikel and a fine passing move resulted in Bellamy assisting Maxi.
Mikel got hooked at half-time and his replacement Sturridge equalised with Malouda assisting. Two Liverpool old-boys, Torres and Miereles, came on after 83 minutes for Ramires and Drogba. However, three minutes later Liverpool scored the winner after Adam played a beautiful raking ball wide to the improving Johnson who left two Chelsea defenders in his wake before confidently slotting home. 2-1 Liverpool. Chelsea have now lost three of their last four.
Everton v Wolves
Everton got a much needed win against Wolves. Rodwell missed out and Moyes said he could be out for a few. Hunt scored for Wolves with a penalty. Evertons scorers were both defenders and Baines and Jagielka are now the clubs joint top scorers with two apiece. Baines also assisted Jagielkas goal. Drenthe started and was one of Evertons best performers.
* Spurs will play Villa at 7am Tuesday. Redknapp has been given the all-clear to take his place in the dug-out earlier than expected.
